Encontramos poblaciones de esta especie en todos los países excepto en El Salvador, en donde esta extinto. Este habitante del bosque tropical, se encuentra amenazado por un aumento en la extensión de los campos agrícolas, la competencia interespecifica con el ganado, la fragmentación del bosque, la cacería, el envenenamiento, la disminución de las presas, fuegos y la guerra. Como una de las amenazas se reporta también el trafico internacional, por lo que se encuentra en el Apéndice I de CITES. Según la Lista Roja de la UICN es considerado Vulnerable, excepto en El Salvador, en donde se encuentra Extinto. Con el fin de analizar la problemática de los jaguares en la Región Mesoamericana, y definir el papel de los Zoológicos en la conservación de esta especie, se reunieron en el Zoológico Nacional Simón Bolívar, en San José, Costa Rica, 45 personas especialistas en jaguares e interesados en su conservación, provenientes de nueve países, los que representaban 27 instituciones diferentes. Este evento se realizó del 27 de noviembre al 01 de diciembre del año 2000. El evento fue organizado por la Asociación Mesoamericana y del Caribe de Zoológicos y Acuarios (AMACZOOA), la Fundación Pro Zoológicos (FUNDAZOO), la Universidad Nacional (UNA) con la colaboración del Grupo de Especialistas en Conservación y Reproducción (CBSG) de la Comisión de Sobrevivencia de Especies de la UICN. El mismo fue financiado por el Zoológico de Chester, Inglaterra. Después de una conferencia presentada por Kathy Conforti y Scott Silver de la Sociedad para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre (WCS) titulada “Los jaguares en el nuevo milenio”, el Dr. Ulises Seal, Presidente de CBSG, presentó la metodología de trabajo a seguir e inmediatamente los participantes iniciaron el trabajo en grupos. Durante los primeros tres dias, los participantes establecieron sus prioridades y metas personales a alcanzar durante el taller, con la información que traían llenaron las Hojas de Datos del Taxón de la especie por pais, ubicaron en mapas la distribución de la especie, y se organizaron en grupos para discutir los siguientes aspectos: Metodologías de encuestas y monitoreo, Manejo de poblaciones en cautiverio, Trabajo individual en cautiverio, Historia natural y Unidades de conservación por país. Cada grupo estableció los problemas que tenía la especie y propuso una estrategia con objetivos y acciones para solucionarlos. El Dr. Phil Miller dio una charla sobre el “Manejo de pequeñas poblaciones” y explicó el análisis que hizo sobre las poblaciones de jaguares silvestres y en cautiverio en la región, y Vera Violeta Montero del MINAE dio una explicación sobre el Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano. Posteriormente, los participantes se agruparon según el país de procedencia, con el fin de analizar la problemática de la especie por país, y establecer una estrategia en la que se proponen acciones para solucionarla. RECOMENDACIONES Recomendaciones por temas METODOLOGÍAS DE ENCUESTAS Y MONITOREO 1) Mantener el contacto y el intercambio de información de los investigadores del taxón a través del Internet. 2) Formular una metodología adecuada y flexible para el estudio de los felinos silvestres. 3) Asegurar la realización y participación de los “presentes” en los talleres de San Salvador. 4) Creación y actualización de un centro de documentación informática. Core facilities include: Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden, Rio Grande Zoo and Tingley Beach. The BioPark has an estimated 6,000 animals, 11,000 plants, 300 staff and 300 year-round volunteers. The Director of the Albuquerque BioPark is Ray Darnell. The Albuquerque Aquarium is a great place to explore aquatic environments by tracing a drop of water from the headwaters of the Rio Grande in southern Colorado to the Gulf of Mexico and out to the oceans of the world. Current exhibits highlight fish of the Rio Grande at Central Bridge, moray eels, invertebrates, coral reefs, floating jellies, sea turtles and lots of toothy sharks. Further construction will develop tanks that highlight species that live in the Pacific Ocean. (Location 2601 Central NW) The Rio Grande Botanic Garden celebrates the miracle of photosynthesis in living color every day. Our state-of-the-art glass conservatories feature plants native to Mediterranean climate zones and xeric plants from North American deserts and other arid regions of the world. A trio of formal walled gardens illustrates Old World design in fountains, tile, herbs and roses. El Jardin de la Curandera is an ethnobotanic exhibit with a beautiful bronze sculpture, and the Children’s Fantasy Garden has giant fun for kids of all ages.
