CHAIRMANS WELCOME Thank you to those who braved the weather and came to the AGM. We managed to elect a committee to fulfil the roles needed. We do still have 3 vacancies, which can be filled by co-option during the year if needed. We had a lovely ploughman’s lunch post AGM prepared by Chris & Lynda Sawkins & Margaret & Dennis Legg. Thank you for preparing it for us to enjoy. The three committee members co-opted for last year stood as committee members. They have been elected now and Dee Tester is our new Secretary, Sue Tye our minutes Secretary and Tony Tester our webmaster. Although we have a committee, our Treasurer Sue Camburn will be stepping down from her role on 31st December. It is imperative that we fill this role at the October committee meeting and notify HQ by 2nd weekend in November. If we have no one, then the region treasurer will have to take over the accounts. If no one at next AGM then there would need to be an EGM. Then if still no one then the DA becomes an inoperative unit. It would mean that the dinner dance could go ahead but no rallies. We have new sites booked for 2019 and new ideas for social functions. So please if you are interested in the role contact Sue Camburn or myself. The job basically entails having a brain and ability to use a laptop (knowledge of excel an advantage). Training can be given and plenty of back up from past treasurers and the Region Treasurer who lives in Poole. It is also useful if we have a second auditor, in case of illness or holiday. In the DA Constitution it does say advisable to have two. If anyone is interested, please contact me. Unfortunately the Easter meet had to be held on hard standing car parks. Next year we have booked the Furzebrook site & the hall nearby. Dates for your diary – SWRSM 13th/15th July at Turnpike Showground – hosted by New Forest DA Booking forms available on website and in Pickets Post. We are holding an End of Season/Christmas Carvery event on Saturday 8th December at The Bridge House, Longham. We are holding the 2019 dinner dance at The Lawns Hotel, Milford on sea Saturday 2nd March 2019. Rooms are available at £75 including breakfast. Only 26 rooms available, so get your booking in as soon as you can. New Forest DA AGM 2019 Sunday 10th March 2019 11 am at Parley Memorial Hall. We do not have a social organiser (if anyone interested – you do not need to be a committee member). At the moment I am organising the Christmas event & Janet Setchell the Dinner dance. The decision was made last year to have the joint end of season supper and Christmas party together. If anyone has an objection to this and any ideas for a separate end of season supper, let us know your ideas & the committee will help YOU organise it. CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME cont’d At committee we discussed stopping giving plastic plaques to stewards, as many stewards have them sitting in drawers. This year all stewards whether weekend or THS meets (regardless of how many) will be given a voucher per person, to be used against either the Christmas function or dinner dance. We still have few gaps for stewards for rallies this year. If you can help please contact Marian Bown, as we do not want to cancel any. 17th/20th May Gorse Farm, Blissford 22nd/24th June Salisbury Rugby Club 29thJune/1st July West Hall Farm, Longburton. 20th/22nd July Longthorns Caravan Park, Wool 28th/30th September Warren Park Farm, Alderholt Don’t forget that the DA website is now www.newforestda.com A thank you to the stewards for March - John & Susan Lawes, Ian Fraser & my other half Colin Brown assisted by me. Enjoy your camping and let us hope the weather improves. Heather Brown Chairman New Forest DA SECRETARY’S REPORT Firstly I would like to thank you all for voting me onto the Committee and allowing me to take the position of Hon Secretary. This will be my 10th year camping and caravanning with the NFDA. As a child, I had been involved in camping with my family in a tent or the old VW campervan. The experience of being outdoors enhanced my drive to keep on camping throughout my life and I am glad to have joined the NFDA. My husband, Tony, and I have seen Youth grow, including our son Rian, experienced different sites to camp and enjoy the people and activities that the DA put on for us. I hope that I can make a difference and look forward to meeting more of you during the coming months. I will be out with the DA at Easter. Please come and chat with me. He explained the neighbourly agreement which had existed since 1963 and although the land was owned by each of the houses, he understood from the title deeds that there was a qualifying rite to access the whole area. He detailed the difficulties resulting from the new positioning of the fence and the knock-on effects with parking on the grass verge and safety issues when exiting the area.

The Streams of the New Forest: a Study in Drainage Evolution

240 HAMPSHIRE FIELD CLUB THE STREAMS OF THE NEW FOREST: A STUDY IN DRAINAGE EVOLUTION By C. E. EVERARD, M.SC. Introduction. HE area to be discussed in this paper is somewhat larger than that ordinarily known as the New Forest. It extends from Tthe Solent northwards to the River Blackwater, and from the Avon eastwards to Southampton Water. The superficial gravel deposits of the New Forest have been the subject of much detailed morphological analysis in recent years {1, 2, 4, 5), and it has been shown that two ' flights' of gravel terraces exist (Figure 2), the larger descending southwards from. the summit area of Black Bush Plain (420ft. O.D.) towards the Solent, and the other flanking the Avon valley. These terraces mark the main pauses in the uplift of the area from its low level in the late Pliocene and since that time the landforms and drainage pattern have been evolving concurrently, under the influence of the intermittently-falling base-level. The gravel-terrace stages make it possible to trace the former courses of the Rivers Avon and ' Solent n across the New Forest and also the shore-lines of the estuaries which partly replaced them in the southern part of the area. The present New Forest streams are the much modified descendants of the tributaries of these major drainage channels. * The tributaries were, in many cases, too small to produce terraces, but two lines of evidence may be followed in attempting to re construct their former courses. Firstly, the development of the tributaries is intimately connected with that of the major arteries, and much is already known about the evolution of the latter.

BRAMSHAW TELEGRAPH NOVEMBER 2019 NEWS DRAGONS TEETH As a result of verges suffering from overrun, Forestry England will commence work in October/November to remove old rotten or no longer serviceable dragon’s teeth and will be installing new ones closer to the road edge. List of locations (and maps) were sent out with October’s edition of the Bramshaw Telegraph. They can also be found here and here #Add3Minutes Drivers are being urged to just #Add3Minutes as the nights draw in to make journeys safer. When the clocks change in October, and people have to drive home in the dark, there is a much higher risk of hitting one of the free-roaming animals. 56 animals were killed on New Forest roads in 2017 63 animals were killed on New Forest roads in 2018 Most of the accidents are caused by local people on regular trips, on four main routes: • Lymington – Beaulieu – Dibden Purlieu • Brockenhurst – Sway • Burley – Picket Post • Cadnam – Godshill Sue Westwood, Clerk to the Verderers said “Driver should be aware that they are very likely to encounter animals on the Forest’s roads, day and night. Animals don’t have road sense so please help avoid accidents by driving slowly and carefully.” Failing to report an accident with a commoner’s animal can lead to prosecution. The Verderers offer a reward of up to £5,000 payable to anyone providing information which leads to the successful prosecution of a driver responsible for a hit and run accident. BOOKS ON BRAMSHAW AND THE NEW FOREST Many residents will remember Jack Sturgess who kindly donated a collection of books to the Parish Council.

The standard Kubota diesel engine means that it can be serviced easily, using local garages. 2.3 Initial display content will include: display panels conveying information about the Park; eye-catching banners / awnings an A-board indicating presence of the unit at a particular car park / location at entrance two larger interactives, such as a stepping stones game and roller post leaflet racks storage. 2.4 Content will develop over the life of the unit and use other resources (such a magnetic interactive or a National Park snakes and ladders game) planned for the New Forest Show and other events. 3 Locations 3.1 We plan to use the unit at the following kinds of locations: coast (Lepe Country Park, Calshot, Keyhaven, Milford on Sea) Crown Land (main recreational sites including car parks: Balmer Lawn, Hatchet Pond, Bolton’s Bench, Deerleap, Whitefield Moor,

I am a Life Member (and recently co- opted Council Member) of the NFA and care passionately, as we all do, about the future of my native area. I would like to see the Newsletter develop into a lively forum for Forest matters - but for that to happen I will need the input of all Members. What would you like to see included in the Newsletter? Is it too long or too short? Does it have too much - or not enough - to say? Would you like to see a letters page? All suggestions and criticisms will be cheerfully received (honestly!) and taken into account in the next issue - due out in time for the New Forest Show in late July. Meanwhile, I wish you all a peaceful and prosperous 2007. Georgina Babey AGM and Member‛s Day Following the success of the Member‛s Day on September 30th, 2006 it has been suggested that it might be time for a change to the format of the Annual General Meeting. Usually an evening event, we are hoping to incorporate it into a Member‛s Day gath- ering - with talks/workshops/field trips and so on. All this, of course, will give the hard pressed Council Members even more work and we were hoping to engage the help of all those en- thusiastic delegates - who came with offers and ideas - to the September Member‛s Day. The AGM will be on Sat 28th April, 2007 at Minstead Details to be arranged 1 Newsletter contents winter 07.indd 1 07/01/2007 20:22:49 Chairman‛s Report I am happy to say that since my report in the summer Newsletter there have been no dramatic events in the Forest but the work of the Asso- ciation continues with our consideration of, and response to, the endless flow of matters that could affect it.
