Arsenal FC will be looking to end their last 16 losing streak when they renew acquaintance with FC Bayern München, last season's UEFA Champions League winners and the side who ended their hopes 12 months ago. • The London team, in the last 16 for the 14th successive year, went down 3-1 at home to Bayern last season and bowed out on away goals despite a 2-0 success in Munich. Arsenal were eliminated by AC Milan in 2011/12 and Josep Guardiola's FC Barcelona the previous season, losing both ties 4-3 on aggregate. • Bayern, meanwhile, had their ten-game UEFA Champions League winning run – a competition record that started following that second-leg defeat by Arsenal – ended on matchday six by Manchester City FC. Previous meetings • Last season's contest at the Arsenal Stadium was always heading Bayern's way once and Thomas Müller had fired the visitors into a 2-0 lead within 21 minutes. scored against his former side but Mario Mandžukić made the final score 3-1. • The lineups on 19 February 2013 were: Arsenal: Szczęsny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Arteta, Cazorla, Ramsey (Rosický 71), Podolski (Giroud 72), Wilshere, Walcott. Bayern: Neuer, Alaba, Dante, Van Buyten, Lahm, T Müller, Javi Martínez, Schweinsteiger, Ribéry (Robben 63), Kroos (Luiz Gustavo 73), Mandžukić (Gomez 78). • Olivier Giroud and scored in Munich but Bayern advanced on away goals. • The teams also met at this stage in 2004/05, Bayern again winning the first leg 3-1, this time in Munich, with Claudio Pizarro scoring their first two goals. It was enough to take them through despite Arsenal's 1-0 win in the return. • Bayern again had the upper hand in the 2000/01 second group stage, winning 1-0 at home after a 2-2 draw in London. Match background • The 2-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund on matchday three was Arsenal's third in succession at home to German opponents. Their record at home to sides is W9 D1 L4; overall it is W14 D5 L9. • In their other home games Arsenal beat SSC Napoli and , both 2-0 – the same scoreline they had overcome Fenerbahçe SK by in the play-offs. On their travels they won in Marseille and Dortmund but their matchday six loss in Naples meant they finished as runners-up behind Dortmund. • Arsenal's last success at this stage came in 2010 when they recovered from a 2-1 defeat at FC Porto to win 5-0 in London. That was their third successive victory in the round of 16. • This is Bayern's sixth successive last-16 appearance with their 2011 reverse against FC Internazionale Milano their sole defeat in that run. • The German champions won five of their six games in Group D to qualify in first place, losing at home to City on matchday six with their passage to the next stage already guaranteed. They had won away to City and beat both PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Viktoria Plzeň home and away. • This is Bayern's fourth visit to England in 12 months and they have been successful on their three previous trips, including victory against Dortmund in May's final at Wembley. • They also met Chelsea FC in the UEFA Super Cup on 30 August in Prague, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Franck Ribéry and Javi Martínez got Bayern's goals. • Bayern's record away to English teams is W4 D7 L6; overall it is W15 D14 L12. • Bayern lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup with a 2-0 final triumph against Leeds United AFC in 1975, but have since lost finals to Aston Villa FC (0-1, 1982), Manchester United FC (1-2, 1999) and Chelsea (1-1, 3-4 pens, 2012). • As Barcelona coach, Guardiola's record against Arsenal was W2 D1 L1. Either side of that spell he spent a total of six years with 1. FC Köln and in ten games against Bayern was only once on the winning side. • Per Mertesacker scored SV Werder Bremen's goal in a 3-1 home defeat against Bayern on 29 January 2011. After Arjen Robben's equaliser, the defender's own goal put Bayern 2-1 in front. During five years in Bremen Mertesacker faced Bayern 16 times, winning only two.

13 Arsenal FC - FC Bayern München Wednesday 19 February 2014 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Arsenal Stadium, London Head coach Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC • Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenal into one of Europe's top teams. • Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987. • Within a year Monaco scooped the French title and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. He led the side to 1991 French Cup glory, then the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup final where they lost to SV Werder Bremen. After reportedly turning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed huge success with Grampus Eight. • Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the Premier League, in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray AŞ but claimed another domestic double in 2002, and in 2003/04 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate an English top-flight season unbeaten. • Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated by Wenger. Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinola Coaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München • Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spells with Brescia, Fabio Capello's Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won 40 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments through injury. • Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season in charge. In the process he became the sixth man to have lifted the European Cup as player and coach. • That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies in all. In his second campaign, Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for the second time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once more before he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. • After a year's break from football, Guardiola took charge of Bayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes at the helm. In his first campaign he collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, the Bundesliga title.
