Methodist History, 42:1 (October 2003) "CROAKERS AND BUSYBODIES'': THE EXTENT AND INFLUENCE OF CHURCH METHODISM IN THE LATE 18TH AND EARLY 19TH CENTURIES GARETH LLOYD In this paper I will be looking at an area of evangelical studies that is much neglected and misunderstood, namely pro-Anglican opinion within the 18th-century Wesleyan movement. The Church Methodists, as they were known, were an inevitable product of Methodism's origins within the Church of England. They were never formally organized or their views defined, but their collective influence lasted well into the 19th century. Simply put, a Church Methodist was someone who saw no contradiction in being both Anglican and Methodist. A necessary part of this viewpoint was opposition to separation from the Church of England. Church Methodism represents, therefore, the other side to one of the central issues of early Methodist history. The existence of agitation in favor of separation from the Anglican Church is well documented in the secondary sources. Principal denomina tional historians like Abel Stevens, Thomas Jackson, and John Telford give the impression that late 18th-century Methodists were largely in favor of Methodism's becoming a distinct denomination. 1 The evolution of John Wesley's own position has also been covered in detail, most notably in Baker's John Wesley and the Church of England. 2 Examination of the Church Methodist viewpoint has been largely restricted to historical studies of Charles Wesley, not the most overcrowded area of evangelical scholar ship. Charles, of course, was the great champion of the Anglican link and his posthumous reputation suffered as a result. -

The thesis describes empirical, exploratory research into the nature, operant practice and understanding of superintendency which was focused on the Newcastle upon Tyne District of the Methodist Church during 2011-2012. -

By those who had the privilege of a personal acquaint- ance with the lamented subject of the following Memoir, it was deemed in no small measure desirable that some record should be preserved of his history and character. To do honour to the sainted dead was less the object of this wish, than to afford a fine example to the living of early and entire devotedness to the cause of God, as it was exemplified during a brief but beautiful life of cheerful piety. It was considered (in defence of publi- cation,) that the just sentiment of Johnson, as to the materiel for effective biography, is now pretty generally recognized—that it adds nothing to the force and prac- tical value of a book that the subject should be greatly lifted out of the ordinary sphere within which men think, and feel, and act : —on the contrary, that what appeals most closely to men's bosoms by way of example and excitement—showing that the points of highest moral, social, and Christian excellence are yet attainable points—will be best calculated to secure the object sought to be obtained. -

BOWMER, M.A., B.D., Ph.D. Volume XXXIX October 1973 CAPTAIN THOMAS WEBB RETURNS To John Street Church, New York N Sunday, 3rd June 1973, Captain Thomas Webb returned to John Street United Methodist church, New York, in the 0 form of two physical trophies closely tied in to the concluding years of his life. The first was the memorial tablet which had been mounted in Portland Chapel, Bristol, soon after his death. The other was the original pastel portrait executed by Lewis Vasiet a few years before the Captain's decease.1 During his last years Thomas \V ebb lived in Bristol. He and his wife were very active in Methodist affairs-members of the society at John Wesley's chapel in the heart of the city-" The New Room in the Horsefair ".2 They appear to have resided in or near Portland Avenue, in the south·western sector of the city. The Captain be came convinced that a strong new society should be organized in the vicinity, and that a chapel could be provided for their worship. He gave himself sedulously to the project, securing an excellent site and erecting a chapel in Portland Place, although he himself could no longer make the financial contribution that his heart could have wished.8 Captain Webb died on 2oth December 1796, and was buried in Portland Chapel-in a vault below the recess in the sanctuary where stood the communion table. Volume XXXIV March 1963 EDITORIAL HE commencement of another volume provides us with an opportunity to greet our readers, for our Society is essentially T a confraternity of unseen friends, with the Proceedings as the only tangible link between us all. This year of Grace, 1963, has dawned with the People called Methodists very much in the news. One could not write this Edit orial without some reference to the Report, just published, of the Conversations between the Methodists and the Church of England. As we are a society whose interests are primarily in history, it could be said that the Report is not our direct concern, and (what is prob ably more to the point) that even less is it our duty to comment upon it at this stage. At the same time, one has to acknowledge that it was our own particular history-viz. the relationship of Wesley and the early Methodists to the Church of England-that led to these Conversations taking place in the first instance. Certainly we be lieve that no true judgement can be passed upon them without some knowledge of that history, and we would like to think that some of the articles which have appeared in these pages-e.g. those on ordin ation-were more widely read in our Church. History surely has a word for the present. * * Two hundred years ago there passed from the Methodist scene that turbulent priest-one of the most colourful figures of the Revival -William Grimshaw. -

A short resume of the inception and aims of the Committee for African Instruction will explain what follows. The Committee arose out of a concern which Hannah Kilham6* [1774-1832], a Sheffield Friend, first brought forward towards the close of the year 1819. Her views were two-fold—the personal instruction of individuals, and the establishment of an Institute for cultivating some of the unwritten languages of Africa, with the intention of composing elementary books and translating portions of the Scriptures. The effort began by H. K. taking two African youths as pupils63; she attained considerable proficiency in the Waloof language ; and when the time came for inquiry as to the prospects of a mission station in Africa, the Committee received an unexpected offer from William Singleton,6* of Loxley near Sheffield—under whose care the two youths had been for some time receiving English education—to go to Africa to make investigations. William Singleton left London on the eighth of Twelfth Month, 1820, and reached England again on the eighteenth of Seventh Month, 1821 ; and, shortly after wards, sent the Committee a full and very interesting report6* of his voyage to the Gambia and to Sierra Leone. This report encouraged the Committee to dispatch a party, headed by Hannah Kilham, to make the first attempt at a settlement; but various circumstances delayed their start, and it was not until the autumn of 1823 that the preparations were complete and the mission left England ; of the party R. -

John Wesley (1703- 1791), whose theological writings and organizational skills drove the movement, traced Methodism’s origins back to the Holy Club, a worship, study, and benevolent service group founded at Oxford University by his brother, Charles Wesley (1707-1788). In the summer of 1738 both John and Charles Wesley underwent dramatic conversions that resulted in a newfound religious enthusiasm that offended many fashionable churches in London. Excluded from their pulpits, John Wesley found a more receptive audience among the poor and laboring classes of England when he adopted field preaching at the urging of George Whitefield. John Wesley’s theology emphasized the work of the Holy Spirit in awakening a desire for God, assuring the Christian of God’s grace, and perfecting one’s love for God and neighbor. -

ALAN ROSE, B.A. Volume 52 May1999 "BY SCHISMS RENT ASUNDER": THE WESLEYAN REFORM MOVEMENT IN DERBYSHIRE . ... such is the state of anarchy and disruption in which we found the circuit, we have not been able to take account of who are members and who are not, so that for the last quarter the Schedule Book is a blank. With the exception of one or two only of the congregations, all the congregation in the circuit are the most disorderly riotous assemblies of wild beasts: and the pulpits regularly the spit of contention between the authorised local preachers, and those patronised by the mob ... I do not think it right to be any further a party to the desecration of all that is sacred on God's day, by contending with infuriated men, some of whom have, again and again, squared their fists in my face in regular pugilistic style and all but struck me in the performance of this necessary duty.1 uch was the state of the Ilkeston Wesleyan Circuit in Derbyshire, as described by Rev. Alexander Hume in a letter to John Beecham, the SPresident of the Wesleyan Conference, dated November 5, 1850. There had been rumblings of disaffection in the lower reaches of the Wesleyan Connexion for some time. It was felt by some, particularly by those living in the provinces, that the W esleyan ministers were becoming too remote from their flocks and neglecting their pastoral duties. Allied to this was the undoubted suspicion held that the Connexion was in the hands of a metropolitan clique ruled by Dr.
