Andy WArhol’s TomATo runs approximately 80 minutes and is performed with no intermission.

Andy WArhol's TomATo was an official selection of the Road Theatre Company’s Summer Playwrights Festival 9, July 2018. Scott Alan Smith Festival Director.

Pittsburgh folklore has it that there is a working class bar which has the reputation for being a place where a teenage Andy Warhol drew pictures on napkins in exchange for Coca-Cola’s. It was a nice story, but just a story. Everyone who told it, told and sold it well. Even if it wasn’t true, they wanted to believe it. I was drinking in this same bar and was told the story. I was fascinated by it. Suddenly, I saw this bar in a different way. It became an exciting, mys- terious, glamorous place. Andy did the same for the world, allowing us to see, think and feel about art in a completely new way. A way we hadn’t VinCe meloCChi before. I kept asking myself, where did his genius come from? Who and/or what were his real influences? I decided to find out. I researched the man as best I could. The more I learned about him, the more I understood where his drive came from. That “Lunch bucket, pull yourself up by the bootstraps” way of think- ing was typical of the immigrant populations desire to be better, to reach further, to become the best you can be. I feel a kinship to Andy, because I was that boy years ago. Not with the same set of problems and circumstances, but being from that steel town with the desire to create? Yes.

In Andy WArhol’s TomATo, there are two characters, Andy and Bones, the owner of the bar. I understand both of these men, because in many ways I am both of them. I’m the artist and will always identify with the blue collar man. All these years later I’ve retained my Pittsburgh sensibility. Pittsburgh shaped Andy, make no mistake about it, no matter how big he got, no matter what he created, that sense of craft was formed in the steel city. Pittsburgh has changed greatly since Andy’s time there, and my time as well. It’s become a cosmopolitan city Andy would be proud of. I know I am. I didn’t write this play as a love letter to Pittsburgh. I wrote this play for those artists tucked away in small towns across the country, unable or unsure how to have their voices heard. Hopefully, like Andy, they’ll create and gift us with their art. ACTor BiogrAphies
