Phanishwar Nath Renu's Literary Genius Reprised on Screen After 51 Phanishwar Nath Renu’s literary genius reprised on screen after 51 years By : INVC Team Published On : 9 Nov, 2017 08:38 AM IST INVC NEWS New Delhi, 51 years after Basu Bhttacharya’sTeesri Kasam, Panishwar Nath Renu’s creation- Panchlait hits the silver screen pan India on 17th November. Renu’s heart-warming stories have always created curiosity among film makers yet it remains vastly unexplored with the last release being Teesri Kasam, helmed by Basu Bhattacharya. Panchlait is the story of a kerosene lamp (which uses paraffin and a hand pump which is used to pressurize, in order to light it up), which plays an integral part in a villagerslife and possessing one is a mark of honour. The film revolves around a specific village community- Mahato Tola and acquiring the coveted Panchlait after much ado and chain of incidents leading upto it. The story line is hinged on multiple and layered social interactions and an ethereal romance brewing between the lead characters. The film is helmed by Prem Modi, his second directorial outing after Arjun a Bengali feature film [2013] written (based on a novel) by Samaresh Mazumder, starring Sabhyasachi Chakraborty, Dipanker Dey, Manoj Mitra, Churni Ganguly and others. Modi has worked with stalwarts like Aparna Sen, Tapan Sinha, Anjun Dutt,Gul Bahar Singh, Shyaman and Jalan,Indranil Goswami among others. He has worked on multiple documentaries, internationally recognised and award winning projects. Prem Modi has worked with powerhouse actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Amrish Puri, Konkona Sen Sharma, RituparnaSengupta, Rajit Kapoor, Victor Banerjee, Kaykay Menon, Jimmy Shergil, and Sandhya Mridul. Talking about the release of the film, Prem Modi Stated, “I always had Phanishwar NathRenu’s stories in mind for my next venture. The simplicity in his stories is irresistible and growing up in Bengal I believe I have acquired a literary bent of mind. Besides I wanted to go Pan India and Hindi had to be my medium of communication this time. The storyline of Panchlait is straight from the Hindi heartland which is the better part of our country and I’m sure audiences around the country will relate to it. It is a tough job to adapt a story like this, since it is popular among the Hindi scholars, in fact this story is there in school syllabi. Also, it was extremely important to preserve the same regional flavour and philosophy upon which the Renu’s stories are based upon. Then I discussed it with my friend Rakesh Kumar Tripathi, who is an excellent writer, my friend and also an associate in this film, thus this project became the dream project for both of us. We were working on this project from past 8 years, and eventually the story was culminated into an excellent script by Rakesh keeping the core elements intact. From the day we conceived this project to now he is there, in fact the whole cast and crew gave their hundred percent, making this dream project of mine and Rakesh a reality.” The ensemble cast of Panchlait boasts of power house performers, NSD graduates and theatre artists such as Yashpal Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Ravi Jhankal, Brijendra Kala, LalitParimoo, Pranay Narrayan, Iqbal Sultan, MaliniSengupta, KalpanaJha with Amitosh Nagpal (Films- Dabangg, Aarakshan, Rangrez and Red)(RED was not a film, it was a TV series) and Anuradha (a trained classical dancer and acted in films like Days of Tafree, Life Biriyani . Alongside a stellar star cast the film also lists veteran crew members), in the lead. Talking about the release of the film actor Yashpal Sharma said, " Panchlait is the kind of cinema that happens once in a while and I'm glad to be a part of the project. The biggest draw for this film is that it is a Paneshwarnath Renu story and we have made the film in its purest form. Keeping everything realistic. I'm waiting for the release now". Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

  • Intellectuals and the Maoists
Intellectuals and the Maoists Uddipan Mukherjee∗ A revolution, insurgency or for that matter, even a rebellion rests on a pedestal of ideology. The ‘ideology’ could be a contested one – either from the so-called leftist or the rightist perspective. As ideology is of paramount importance, so are ‘intellectuals’. This paper delves into the concept of ‘intellectuals’. Thereafter, the role of the intellectuals in India’s Maoist insurgency is brought out. The issue turns out to be extremely topical considering the current discourse of ‘urban Naxals/ Maoists’. A few questions that need to be addressed in the discourse on who the Maoist intellectuals are: * Dr. Uddipan Mukherjee is a Civil Service officer and presently Joint Director at Ordnance Factory Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He earned his PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Department of Atomic Energy. He was part of a national Task Force on Left Wing Extremism set up by the think tank VIF. A television commentator on Maoist insurgency, he has published widely in national and international journals/think-tanks/books on counterinsurgency, physics, history and foreign policy. He is the author of the book ‘Modern World History' for Civil Services. Views expressed in this paper are his own. Uddipan Mukherjee Are the intellectuals always anti-state? Can they bring about a revolution or social change? What did Gramsci, Lenin or Mao opine about intellectuals? Is the ongoing Left- wing Extremism aka Maoist insurgency in India guided by intellectuals? Do academics,

H-Film Alternative Cinema(s) of South Asia/ Submission of Abstracts: 20th August 2020 Discussion published by Elif Sendur on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 GGSIP University, New Delhi, Shivaji University, Kolhapur contact email: [email protected] South Asia in Alternative Cinema(s) Concept Note South-Asian Cinema comprises the body of cinematic works produced in South–Asian Countries - India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It offers an indispensable source for understanding the vicissitudes of the region addressing its social, political and cultural issues. It is significant to note that for South–Asian Cinema has been a site of national, religious, ethnic and cultural debates. These films are a valuable source to understand social, cultural and political dynamics of the region. Despite its seemingly common problems such as the issues of minorities, women, violence, fluid contact zones, disputed borders and challenges of modernity, the region is also known for its cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic diversity. Though there are superficial similarities yet each country/region has its unique dynamics, social system, cultural practices and circumstances. The complex nature of the region demands critical engagement and nuanced understanding of its society, culture, politics and art. The present project shifts the focus from mainstream cinema to all kinds of alternative cinema(s). Since there are many forms of alternate cinematic expressions, it is proposed to call in alternate cinema(s). The present project invites original research papers/chapters from film scholars, film writers and filmmakers reflecting on Parallel Cinema or New Wave or New Cinema or Avant Garde in the past and Indies, new cinema or New (Middle) Cinemas, short films or experimental films in the post-liberalization era across South Asia to understand region specific issues.

  • 100 Essential Indian Films, by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta
Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 21, 2021, pp. 239–243 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.21.21 100 Essential Indian Films, by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Datta. Rowman & Littlefield, 2019, 283 pp. Darshana Chakrabarty Among the many film industries of South Asia, the Indian film industry is the most prolific, specifically Hindi language film, more commonly known as Bollywood, which produces almost four hundred films annually. Bollywood films dominate the national market. These films have also been exported successfully to parts of the Middle East, Africa, and the Asiatic regions of the former Soviet Union, as well as to Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US. The success of these films abroad is largely down to the presence of Indian communities living in these regions; as the conventional melodramatic plot structures, dance numbers and musicals tend to deter Western audiences. Within India and abroad “the traditional division between India’s popular cinema and its ‘art’ or ‘parallel’ cinema, modelled after India's most prestigious film-director Satyajit Ray, often produced the uncritical assumption that Indian films are either ‘Ray or rubbish’” (Chaudhuri 137). Recently, Indian film criticism has begun focusing on popular Indian cinema, assessing the multi-discursive elements of the cinematic creations. Bollywood “gained prominence within academia due to its growing popularity and unique manner of glorifying Indian familial values” (Sinha 3). From a history and origin of Indian motion pictures to selecting films that best represent the diversity, integrity and heritage of the nation, 100 Essential Indian Films by Rohit K. Dasgupta and Sangeeta Dutta is a concise book on Indian cinema for connoisseurs and for film enthusiasts taking an interest in India’s classic and contemporary cinema.
