The New Zealand Rain Forest: A Comparison with Tropical Rain Forest! J. W. DAWSON2 and B. V. SNEDDON2 ABSTRACT: The structure of and growth forms and habits exhibited by the New Zealand rain forest are described and compared with those of lowland tropical rain forest. Theories relating to the frequent regeneration failure of the forest dominants are outlined. The floristic affinities of the forest type are discussed and it is suggested that two main elements can be recognized-lowland tropical and montane tropical. It is concluded that the New Zealand rain forest is comparable to lowland tropical rain forest in structure and in range of special growth forms and habits. It chiefly differs in its lower stature, fewer species, and smaller leaves. The floristic similarity between the present forest and forest floras of the Tertiary in New Zealand suggest that the former may be a floristically reduced derivative of the latter. This research is dedicated to Mr. Alan Charlesworth Armitage (1915- 2002) of Christchurch, who encouraged this research. His family roots NEW ZEALAND in England were in the West Riding. Originally Independents living at Hightown in the Spen Valley, here they joined the Primitive Methodists and then moved to Leeds. Subsequently some of the family moved to New Zealand where they became Wesleyan Methodists. PRIMITIVE METHODIST MINISTERS by CIRCUITS [2015] In 1988 the late William Leary published his Ministers & Circuits in the Primitive ABBREVIATIONS Methodist Church, a Directory which records the ministerial stationing. Ths accuracy of Leary’s listing in part is complicated by an inconsistency of B - born presenting material for the oversea stations – Australia/Australasia, Canada and CH - children New Zealand. His source for this research was the annual Primitive Methodist Ct. - circuit Conference. D - died - EM - entered ministry When conference met in late spring in the United Kingdom to decide the Kendall - H.B. Kendall, The Origin and History of the Primitive Methodist Church ministerial stationing, it was mid-winter in New Zealand. Given also the time 2 vols (London, Joseph Johnson, nd [c1905]) taken to get there from the United Kingdom, especially prior to the opening of HLP - hired local preacher the Suez Canal in 1869, the newly arrived minister might be go to another circuit LP - local preacher other than that in the Conference Minutes. E-newsletter: No 107. October 2010 Deadline for next issue: Wednesday 14 November 2012 Council member guest editorial In 2005, I remember giving a presentation to my fellow reference librarians at Christchurch City Libraries on a range of electronic resources providing information about New Zealand’s environment. The Network’s website particularly impressed me and it wasn’t long before I signed up as a member. Back then, I never would have predicted that I would have the opportunity to contribute to that impressive website, but here I am doing just that! As many of you will have read in the August issue of Trilepidea, the Network’s website is undergoing some redevelopment to improve usability. I am enjoying the challenge of helping to improve access to the amazing trove of information contained on our website. I’ve rediscovered hidden corners of the website I’d forgotten about and great new additions such as the lichens and macroalgae species pages. The amazing range of images contributed by hundreds of photographers is a powerful resource that will feature more prominently in the redeveloped site. The new site will be launched soon and I am looking forward to hearing what people think about the changes. Keep your ears and eyes open for the new website and please send your feedback to: [email protected]. There will also be some exciting changes to the Favourite Native Plant vote this year. Though some people may find this annual exercise a bit frivolous, I think it provides a good excuse to share our love for native plants with everyone. -

Anthony Verboom ABSTRACT The biogeographic history of a species is a result of both stochastic processes such as dispersal and habitat filters that determine where a population with a given set of biological requirements can become es- tablished. In this dissertation, I examine the geographical and ecolog- ical distribution of the sedge tribe Schoeneae in conjunction with its inferred speciation history in order to determine the pattern of disper- sal and the environmental factors that have influenced establishment. The biogeographic reconstruction indicates numerous transoceanic dispersal events consistent with random diffusion from an Australian point of origin, but with a bias towards habitats with vegetation type and moisture regime similar to the ancestral conditions of the given subgroup (open and dry habitats in the majority of cases). The global distribution of the tribe also suggests a preference for low-nutrient soils, which I investigate at the local (microhabitat) scale by contrast- ing the distributions of the tribes Schoeneae and Cypereae on the Cape Peninsula along soil fertility axes. -

Abstract Patterns of flammability across the vascular plant phylogeny, with special emphasis on the genus Dracophyllum by Xinglei Cui Fire has been part of the environment for the entire history of terrestrial plants and is a common disturbance agent in many ecosystems across the world. Fire has a significant role in influencing the structure, pattern and function of many ecosystems. Plant flammability, which is the ability of a plant to burn and sustain a flame, is an important driver of fire in terrestrial ecosystems and thus has a fundamental role in ecosystem dynamics and species evolution. However, the factors that have influenced the evolution of flammability remain unclear.
