Some sections of the media were even calling the events “Tanzania’s Tsunami!” President Kikwete addessing the CCM congress in Dodoma What happened? A summary 1. In July as all the political parties were having difficulty in choosing their candidates for the presidency, the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party decided to steal a march on the others by bringing forward their own selection process and forcing the other parties to do the same. 2. It seemed as though almost everyone who is anyone wanted to become president. A total of no less than 42 CCM leaders, an unprec- edented number, registered their desire to be the party’s presidential candidate. They included former prime ministers and ministers and many other prominent CCM officials. 3. Process in Tanzania the Political, Civil and Economic Society
Tanzania has been independent in 2011 for 50 years. While most neighbouring states have Jonas gone through violent conflicts, Tanzania has managed to implement extensive reforms with- out armed political conflicts. Hence, Tanzania is an interesting case for Peace and Develop- ment research. E Challenges for the This dissertation analyses the political development in Tanzania since the introduction of wald the multiparty system in 1992, with a focus on the challenges for the democratisation process democratisation in connection with the 2000 and 2005 elections. The question of to what extent Tanzania has moved towards a consolidation of democracy, is analysed through an analysis of nine different institutions of importance for democratisation, grouped in four spheres, the state, Challenges for the process in Tanzania the political, civil and economic society. Focus is on the development of the political society, and the role of the opposition in particular. The main conclusion is that even if the institutions of liberal democracy have gradually developed, in practice single-party rule has continued, manifested in the 2005 election when the CCM won 92% of the seats in the parliament. Despite an impressive economic growth, poverty remains deep and has not been substantially reduced. On a theoretical level this brings the old debate between liberal and substantive democracy back to the fore. Neither the economic nor the political reforms have apparently brought about a transformation of the political and economic system resulting in the poor majority gaining substantially more political influence and improved economic conditions. -

JK: The dispute that has given rise to the present petition emanates from a statement allegedly made by the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda (hereinafter referred to as the "Prime Minister" or "the 1st respondent") while addressing a session of the National Assembly at Dodoma on 20th June, 2013. The petitioners, Legal and Human Rights Centre and the Tanganyika Law Society, are challenging part of the Prime Minister's statement, made during a weekly session of the Assembly called "maswali na majibu ya papo kwa papo kwa Mheshimiwa Waziri Mkuu". The Prime Minister is alleged to have said 1 the following words in response to a question from a Member of Parliament: "...ukifanya fujo umeambiwa usifanye hiki ukaamua kukaidi utapigwa tu... nami nasema muwapige tu kwa sababu hamna namna nyingine kwa maana tumechoka..." The petitioners have provided a literal translation of this statement, which runs thus: "If you cause disturbance, having been told not to do this, if you decide to be obstinate, you only have to be beaten up.. -

The Authoritarian Turn in Tanzania
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by UCL Discovery The Authoritarian Turn in Tanzania Dan Paget is a PhD candidate at the University of Oxford, where he is writing his thesis on election campaigning in sub-Saharan Africa, and in particular the uses of the rally. While living in Tanzania in 2015, he witnessed the general election campaign and the beginning of Magufuli’s presidency first-hand. Abstract Since 2015, Tanzania has taken a severe authoritarian turn, accompanied by rising civil disobedience. In the process, it has become a focal point in debates about development and dictatorship. This article unpicks what is happening in contemporary Tanzania. It contends that Tanzania is beset by a struggle over its democratic institutions, which is rooted in rising party system competition. However, this struggle is altered by past experience in Zanzibar. The lessons that both government and opposition have drawn from Zanzibar make the struggle in mainland Tanzania more authoritarian still. These dynamics amount to a new party system trajectory in Tanzania Dan Paget 2 The Tanzanian general election of 2015 seemed like a moment of great democratic promise. Opposition parties formed a pre-electoral coalition, which held. They were joined by a string of high-profile defectors from the ruling CCM (Chama cha Mapinduzi, or the Party of the Revolution). The defector-in-chief, Edward Lowassa, became the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate and he won 40 per cent of the vote, the strongest showing that an opposition candidate has ever achieved in Tanzania. -

Bi-lateral trade and Chinese economic activity in Tanzania today is far more significant than in the 1970s; China’s “no strings attached” policy is still attractive and political solidarities and military co-operation have remained relatively strong. However, this bi-lateral relationship does not have the importance, nor the exclusiveness it enjoyed in the heydays of socialism. Today, China must compete economically, politically and culturally with the activism and soft power of a larger group of countries, particularly the United States. Although both in Dar es Salaam and in Beijing this relationship is still presented as “special”, it has lost the structural role that it had until the late 1970s in shaping Sino-African relations. Growing Sino-American and Sino-Western competition in Africa has increased Tanzania’s option and helped it, to some extent, to better defend its own interests. This paper examines Tanzanian-Chinese relations over the past half century and more particularly since 2005, highlighting how global political, strategic and economic shifts have affected and on the whole reduced, in relative terms, the importance of this bi-lateral relationship. On a computer or tablet, write a Python program that prints out each year that Tanzania has had a general election. In Python, you can loop over the items of a list like this: or ite' in list, - do so'ething $ith ite' 2. Using your answer for #1, change it slightly so that it only prints out the years in which Tanzania has had a general election after the year 1999. 3. Sometimes we want to work with two lists at the same time. Say we are given the following list of Tanzanian vice presidents: tanzanian_.ice_presidents = [“/a'ia /uluhu!, “Moha'ed 0hari1 %ilal!, ( “2'ar )li Ju'a!, “3leopa Msuya!, “)1oud Ju'1e!] and we want to match each vice president with the president he or she served with. We can use Python’s zip() function to do this.
