COMMUNITY SOCCER U9 - U12 COACHING GUIDE LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE U9 - U12 2 WEEK 1: PENETRATING WITH THE BALL LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE The goal of this practice is to recognize opportunities and skills to use to penetrate with the ball in both 1v1 and 4v4 scenarios. 1. Dribbling with the Ball (10 minutes) 2. Penetrating with the Ball 1v1 (15 minutes) 3. Penetrating Forwards with the Ball 4v4 (15 minutes) 4. Scrimmage (20 minutes) Activity #1 Dribbling with the Ball 10 minutes Use this practice to warm up your player in preparation for the dribbling sessions ahead. Set up 4 cones in a 20 x 35 yard grid. Place players inside the grid - each with their own ball. At start, have players to dribble around free- ly. When instructed, players complete an in- struction from their coach, incuding: 1. Change direction using all parts of the foot 2. Change the tempo of your dribble to get into open space 3. Complete a move (Push Pull, v-Move, etc,) Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should use multiple turns to support them when changing direction or moving side to side. Players should try to use the inside and outside hook, encour- age players to use both feet allowing them to be unpredictable on the ball. U9 - U12 3 WEEK 1: PENETRATING WITH THE BALL LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE Activity #2 Penetrating with the Ball 1v1 15 minutes Coach your players how to dribble and run with the ball to penetrate through opposi- tion lines. Setup a 20 x 15 yard grid. Divide the team into 2 groups and place them at opposite corners of the grid. Coach will roll ball into one of the players, and he/she will attempt to dribble it past the opposing players line while the other player defends. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should use multiple turns to support them when changing direction or moving side to side. Players should try to use the inside and outside hook, encour- age players to use both feet allowing them to be unpredictable on the ball. U9 - U12 4 WEEK 1: PENETRATING WITH THE BALL LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE Activity #3 Penetrating Forwards with the Ball 4v4 15 minutes In this conditioned game, coach your players on how to develop their dribbling and decision making to penetrate defensive lines and play forward. Set up a 35 x 40 yard grid. Assign 3 attack- ers, 3 defenders, 1 GK, and 1 target player. Attackers must dribble the ball across mid- field before advancing the ball deeper and attempting to score. Defenders must attempt to stop the attack- ers and get the ball to the green target play- er. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should use multiple turns to support them when changing direction or moving side to side. Players should try to use the inside and outside hook, encour- age players to use both feet allowing them to be unpredictable on the ball. U9 - U12 5 WEEK 1: PENETRATING WITH THE BALL LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE Activity #4 Scrimmage 20 minutes In this game, coach your players on how to develop their dribbling and decision mak- ing to penetrate defensive lines and play forward. Set up a 50 x 60 yard grid for a scrimmage. Normal rules of the game apply. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should use multiple turns to support them when changing direction or moving side to side. Players should try to use the inside and outside hook, encour- age players to use both feet allowing them to be unpredictable on the ball. U9 - U12 6 WEEK 2: MOVING FORWARD I LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE The goal of this practice is to learn and experiment with different methods of dribbling the ball down the field. 1. Penetrating with the Ball at Their Feet (10 minutes) 2. Dribbling to Penetrate (20 minutes) 3. 3v3 Practice (15 minutes) 4. Scrimmage (20 minutes) Activity #1 Penetrating with the Ball at Their Feet 10 minutes Use this practice to warm up your player in preparation for the dribbling sessions ahead. Set up a 10 x 20 yard grid. Divide players into pairs and place on them on opposite sides of the grid from each other. Position a cone in the middle between each pair. When coach says go, players dribble to the middle cone and listens for Coach to call out a move. Coach asks players to perform a move (Pullback Turn, Inside of Foot Turn, Outside of Foot Turn) and then dribbles back to their starting position. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, encourage your players to use both feet. Players should use both feet to support the players balance while dribbling. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should try different ways to beat the player moves like body feints and scissors when approaching the cone. This will make them more confident com- pleting a skill with the ball at their feet. U9 - U12 7 WEEK 2: MOVING FORWARD I LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE Activity #2 Dribbling to Penetrate 20 minutes Use this practice to develop your player’s confidence beating a player 1v1, your players will learn how to use their dribbling and ball mastery skills to support them getting past a defender. Set up a 20 x 15 yard grid and divide play- ers into two teams. Place teams at oppo- site corners of the grid. Coach throws a ball into the middle of the grid, and 1 player from each team try to pos- sess the ball. The player that can dribble across the opposide side of the grid gains 1 point. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. Players should use different parts of both feet allowing them to manipulate the ball in different directions when under pressure. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. Players should push with their laces to give them more power. • Beat the Player, Moves: Players should try different ways to beat the player moves like body feints and scissors when approaching the cone. This will make them more confident completing a skill with the ball at their feet. U9 - U12 8 WEEK 2: MOVING FORWARD I LAKESHORE UNITED FC COMMUNITY SOCCER COACHING GUIDE Activity #3 3v3 Practice 15 minutes In this conditioned game, coach your players on how to develop their dribbling and de- cision making to penetrate defensive lines and play forward. Set up a 25 x 35 yard grid. Divide players into teams of 3. Team A attempts to score in a single, larger goal. Team B is defends that goal, and can counter attack into mini goals at the oppo- site side of the field. If mini goals are not available, cones or tar- get players not in the game can be used to signify an outlet pass. All players must dribble or pass across the midfield line before attempting to score. Key Coaching Points • Dribbling: Players should take one touch for every step they take whilst dribbling, en- courage your players to use both feet. • Running with the Ball: When there is space in front to drive into, encourage players to run with the ball by taking one touch for every three steps they take. • Turning: Players should use multiple turns to support them when changing direction or moving side to side.
