  • SOUL ASYLUM Biography by Arthur Levy
SOUL ASYLUM biography by Arthur Levy “It’s a crazy mixed up world out there, Someone’s always got a gun and it’s all about money You live with loneliness, or you live with somebody who’s crazy It’s just a crazy mixed up world …” (“Crazy Mixed Up World”) Chapter 1. Every Cloud Has One Renewed and revitalized, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy return to rock’s front line with THE SILVER LINING, their first new studio release since 1998’s Candy From a Stranger. That album inadvertently kicked off a seven-year sabbatical for the group, which telescoped into the death of bassist Karl Mueller in June 2005, the other founding member of the triumvirate that has steered Soul Asylum through rock’s white water for the past two decades plus. The re-emergence of the group on THE SILVER LINING is as much a reaffirmation of Soul Asylum’s commitment to the music as it is a dedication to Karl, who worked and played on the album right up until the end. They were joined in the studio by not-so-new heavyweight Minneapolis drummer Michael Bland (who has played with everyone from Paul Westerberg to Prince). The band is now complemented by Tommy Stinson on bass, a member of fellow Twin Cities band the Replacements since age 13, and a pal of Dan’s since he was in high school and Tommy in junior high. Tommy was the only friend that Karl could endorse to replace himself in the band. This hard-driving lineup was introduced for the first time in October 2005, when they played sold-out showcase dates at First Avenue in Minneapolis and the Bowery Ballroom in New York – within three days.

  • An Intelligent Technique to Customise Music Programmes for Their Audience
Poolcasting: an intelligent technique to customise music programmes for their audience Claudio Baccigalupo Tesi doctoral del progama de Doctorat en Informatica` Institut d’Investigacio¶ en Intel·ligencia` Artificial (IIIA-CSIC) Dirigit per Enric Plaza Departament de Ciencies` de la Computacio¶ Universitat Autonoma` de Barcelona Bellaterra, novembre de 2009 Abstract Poolcasting is an intelligent technique to customise musical se- quences for groups of listeners. Poolcasting acts like a disc jockey, determining and delivering songs that satisfy its audience. Satisfying an entire audience is not an easy task, especially when members of the group have heterogeneous preferences and can join and leave the group at different times. The approach of poolcasting consists in selecting songs iteratively, in real time, favouring those members who are less satisfied by the previous songs played. Poolcasting additionally ensures that the played sequence does not repeat the same songs or artists closely and that pairs of consecutive songs ‘flow’ well one after the other, in a musical sense. Good disc jockeys know from expertise which songs sound well in sequence; poolcasting obtains this knowledge from the analysis of playlists shared on the Web. The more two songs occur closely in playlists, the more poolcasting considers two songs as associated, in accordance with the human experiences expressed through playlists. Combining this knowl- edge and the music profiles of the listeners, poolcasting autonomously generates sequences that are varied, musically smooth and fairly adapted for a particular audience. A natural application for poolcasting is automating radio pro- grammes. Many online radios broadcast on each channel a random sequence of songs that is not affected by who is listening.

  • Soul Asylum Presskit
SOUL ASYLUM PRESSKIT Soul Asylum "A friend asked me what kind of records I want to make, and my answer was that I always want to make a record that I want to hear that's not already in my record collection," says Dave Pirner. "I think we got that on this one." Pirner is referring to Change of Fortune, Soul Asylum's eleventh studio album, and its first for Entertainment One Music (eOne Music). The dozen-song set embodies the band's trademark balance of rocking abandon, infectious melodic craft and raw-nerved emotional depth, boasting a compelling set of new Pirner compositions while showcasing the strength and versatility of Soul Asylum's current lineup, which teams founding singer/guitarist Pirner with guitarist Justin Sharbono, bassist Winston Roye and drummer Michael Bland. Three and half decades down the road from the band's indie-punk origins, Change of Fortune — co-produced by the band and longtime studio collaborator John Fields — is classic Soul Asylum, with such musically and lyrically pointed new tunes as first single "Supersonic," "Can't Help It," "Doomsday," "Make It Real," and the title track packing a familiar sonic and emotional punch, while carrying a hard-won sense of survival and perseverance that honors Soul Asylum's storied history while pointing towards the future. "It's more honest than any record I've made in a very long time, just because there was no one looking over my shoulder and editing me, which was very liberating for me," says Pirner. "It sounds like the vision that I had in mind a really long time ago.
