The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics begins with those cornerstones to inspire student-athletes to reach their highest academic, athletic and personal goals. The program guides all student-athletes through structured programming from freshman through senior year in a line-up that includes Academic Success; Cougar History and Tradition; Health and Wellness; Financial Management, and Ethics and Leadership, among other classes. The curriculum is based on NCAA and Jeff Janssen Sports Management programs. Student-athletes have their own center for group study, one- on-one tutoring, and small classes in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), where they can also take advantage of Career and Life Skills presentations every semester. HOUSTON’S WINNING TRADITIONS Serving Houston’s communities is a UH winning tradition that student-athletes practice all year. During the holidays, they partner with the University of Houston Alumni Cougars Athletic Alliance (UHCAA) to provide a helping hand to those in need. Last year, the group focused on the House of Tiny Treasures, Houston’s only nationally accredited early childhood development center serving homeless children. Throughout the semesters, teams work with various organizations, including Lift Up America and Texas Children’s Hospital, and in the summer volunteer at UH sports camps. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Game venues that have hosted some of the greatest games and fans during several decades are currently being renovated. The University of Houston’s new football stadium, on the site of the current Robertson Stadium, could be completed for the 2013 season with up to 50,000 seats. The east side of the stadium complex will house the Hall of Fame and Home and Visiting team lockers. Hofheinz Pavilion will eventually offer 8,593 seats, with premium seating expanded on the floor and loge box. CHAMPION ETHICS Our Cougar Pride rises from a foundation of ethics to build a culture that challenges student-athletes to realize their academic, athletic and personal aspirations with honor and accountability. We are dedicated to graduating leaders who excel not only in athletics and academics, but also in life. We ensure our department adheres to NCAA, Office of Civil Rights, Conference USA and University rules and regulations as we nurture and expand relationships throughout the campus and the Houston community. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. The tradition dates back to 1953, when mascot was revived in 2011 with Shasta VI, our current living cougar mascot, who Shasta I, the presiding cougar mascot, lost a toe in a cage door resides in a beautifully-outfitted habitat at the Houston Zoo. The mascots do pushups after each Cougar 1976 with a 30-0 win over that same team, tradition tells Cougar touchdown scored, to match the total on the scoreboard. THE OFFICIAL CLASS RING The class ring is presented each semester at a formal Ring Ceremony, an event held prior to both the December and May graduations. Tradition dictates that current students must wear the ring facing inward, with only alumni wearing the ring facing outward. Each class ring spends the night before the Ring Ceremony with our live mascot, Shasta VI, in the cougar habitat at the Houston Zoo.
