The Glencoe Invitational was established in 1992 to allow for more amateur tournament golf for players from Western Canada. Over the last 24 years, the event has evolved into one of the highest ranked amateur tournaments in Canada and also receives international recognition. The tournament is listed on the Order of Merit as well as the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). The WAGR ranks the top amateur golfers in the world on the basis of their average performance in counting events on a rolling cycle over the previous 52 weeks. The Invitational field is typically made up of those in the top 50 on the Golf Canada Order of Merit, and the top Canadian players listed on the WAGR. Over 50% of our players are between the ages of 19 and 22. Past tournaments have included players from New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Canada’s National Team and players from across the country. To date, 66 former participants are now playing on various professional tours around the globe. You may recognize our 2005 Champion, Graham DeLaet who is one of the highest ranking Canadians playing on the PGA tour.

Congrats to the Pearland Texas native and member of the Houston Men’s Golf Team. Pryce was four under over 54 holes of stroke play and managed to make a new course record on day one of competition. Conditions were not easy with the wind on day two and the challenging course setup. Thanks to our Turfcare team for the course conditions the players were once again very complimentary about our Forest course. Coming in second place Chris Crisologo from BC at three under par, Emmett Oh came in at even par for the tournament in third place and Brendan MacDougall came in at one over for the event in fourth place, both Glencoe Members. In other great news, we have already received our re-ranking on the World Amateur Golf Rankings (www.wagr.com) and we have moved another letter grade to “D”. This puts us Dale Goehring just one letter grade behind the Canadian Men’s Amateur. Note that all other events in INVITATIONAL CHAIRMAN Canada are “F” or lower. Also note that our event was ranked at “F” in 2015 so we are making real progress. This new ranking should help us continue to improve the quality of players at the event. Once again thanks to all of our sponsors, volunteers and staff that make this event possible!

This event began back in 1992 when it was decided a high profile amateur competition needed to be staged and that the place to do it was the Glencoe. From there it has grown to one of the most coveted tee times for competitive amateur golfers. “Some Glencoe members felt the need to promote amateur golf so it started with Greg Smyth, who felt there wasn’t a high-end amateur event of this stature available in Canada,” said Natasha Sawatsky, the marketing director at the Glencoe. Besides those players who are invited into the tourney by the organizing committee, a select few have the chance to play their way in. Those applicants must play to a 4.0 handicap or less and this year 27 of them will be looking to fill one of only four spots available. This year, the championship is wide open as last year’s winner, Jared du Toit, has turned professional, meaning any of the 57 players on hand have a legitimate shot at winning.
