The Hall of Honor and the Move to Tier One Athletics By Debbie Z. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. It went undefeated for the season, scoring three goals to every one for its opponents. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. Fouke as athletic director. He added coaches in men’s tennis, golf, track, football, and basketball, and a new director of women’s athletics focused on physical education. The Brothers In Arms – Hall of Famer Warren Moon, Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, University of Texas legend Vince Young, and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson – along with the Sports Authority Foundation, announced today that TDECU will be the presenting sponsor for what is now the inaugural Brothers In Arms Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by TDECU. The event will be held on April 26 at the Carlton Woods Creekside Fazio Course simultaneously and in conjunction with the Insperity Invitational Pro-Am on the Monday of the Insperity Invitational tournament week. • Eisenhower, Dwight D.: Post-Presidential Papers, 1961-69
EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: POST-PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS, 1961-69 1961 PRINCIPAL FILE Series Description Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Post-Presidential Papers reveal the wide range of contacts and the busy schedule which he maintained during the 1960s. A large volume of mail kept his small secretarial staff busy, and he was in great demand as a public speaker. Correspondence in the Post-Presidential Papers offers some interesting insights into Eisenhower’s thinking on numerous issues. No longer burdened by the responsibilities of public office, he felt freer, perhaps, to express himself on various topics. Among the issues discussed in documents found within the 1961 Principal File are the space program, the Berlin situation, Republican party politics, the U.S. economy and monetary policy, and the 1960 elections. Additional topics discussed include Cuba and the Bay of Pigs disaster, foreign aid, taxes, the alleged missile gap, the 1952 campaign, the U.S.I.A.’s mission, the Electoral College, Laos, Latin America, and public housing. Eisenhower’s correspondence in the 1961 Principal File reflects a virtual Who’s Who of both foreign leaders and prominent Americans. Konrad Adenauer of Germany, John Diefenbaker of Canada, Anthony Eden, Harold Macmillan, and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, Prime Minister Menzies of Australia, President Mateos of Mexico, and King Saud of Saudi Arabia are among the foreign leaders who stayed in touch with the ex-president. Many prominent Americans maintained contact with the former president as well. He corresponded with numerous former members of his administration, including Dillon Anderson, Ezra Taft Benson, Arthur F. Burns, Andrew Goodpaster, James Hagerty, Bryce Harlow, Gabriel Hauge, C.D.

Golf, the Flag, and the 1917 Western Amateur By Stephen R. Lowe Within hours of the horrifying events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, President Bush told the nation that it had just entered its first war of the new century. For days afterward, little else seemed to matter. Our sports-crazed nation approved the cancellation of professional team schedules through the following weekend. The PGA Tour cancelled its event as well, and the long-anticipated Ryder Cup matches, where the European squad looked to settle their Brookline beef at the Belfry, became another quick casualty. Those early cancellations of sports events were easy calls. The following week, though, baseball, football, golf, and everything else American began again, if sometimes awkwardly. The role of sports in times so serious as war has always been tricky. When is it okay to play? As Americans fight the first war of a new century, golf fans may find some helpful perspective in the first war of the last one.
