Se a s o n PREVIEW With the 2011 softball season approaching, Ragin’ Cajuns fans are going to see quite a few changes around Lamson Park, in the stands and on the field. By t h e Nu m b e r s When Louisiana opens its home slate on February 11 with the 25th Annual Louisiana Classics, fans will be treated to a freshly renovated Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park. The renovation has been on-going for nearly two years now, and the 2011 Ragin’ Cajuns are going to be 12 able to call their home one of the finest collegiate softball facilities in the nation. The facility is set The Cajuns have advanced to 12 to host two in-season tournaments as well as the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Tournament consecutive NCAA Regionals (1999- It has been a tradition of success that has helped build the new Lamson Park. 2010), including two Super Regional trips The Cajuns have advanced to NCAA postseason play in each of the past 12 seasons, the 11th (2008, 2010) and two Women’s College longest streak in the nation, and in 20 of the last 21 seasons. UL has posted at least 45 wins in each World Series appearances (2003, 2008). of those past 12 seasons including at least 50 wins seven times and 60 once. However, it isn’t just the surroundings that will look different for the Cajuns in 2011. Co-head coaches Stefni and Michael Lotief have lost seven seniors from a 2010 squad that advanced to the 45+ NCAA Super Regionals and will have to replace them with a few new faces. Louisiana has posted at least 45 wins in Fans will recognize some faces, including the lone senior on the 2011 squad, Gabriele Bridges, each of those past 12 seasons, including 2011 and redshirt juniors Ashley Brignac and Christi Orgeron. seven seasons in which the Cajuns Bridges and Orgeron will pace a potent offensive attack for UL that features a great mix of reached the 50-win plateau and one season with 60 wins. power and slap hitters. Bridges and Orgeron have combined for 69 career home runs and will team Season Preview up with the likes of Taryn Broussard, Megan Granger and Sarah Draheim to provide the power th for the Cajuns’ offense. 16 A few speedsters will set the tone for Louisiana including junior Erikka Murphy. Murphy hit The Cajuns finished last season ranked .315 a year ago and was 33-for-34 in the stolen bases category. 16th in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 The Cajuns will also welcome the return of Katie Smith who was lost early in 2010 due to injury. Speedy sophomore Nerissa Myers will return to man her shortstop position and provide a great mix of offense and defense for UL as well. 1 The pitching rotation for UL will also feature a proven commodity and a mix of new faces. The Cajuns have just one senior on the Brignac returns after missing all of 2010 due to injury. The junior right-hander was sensational roster in 2010, Gabriele Bridges. in 2008, leading the Cajuns to a College World Series berth, going 31-7 with 327 K’s in her freshman campaign. She was equally impressive in 2009, posting a 0.44 ERA and striking out 107 batters in just 79.0 innings of work. 5 The only other returning pitcher is sophomore Paige Cavallin who saw limited action in 2010. However, the Cajuns have five others Freshmen hurlers such as Allie Chenault, Christina Hamilton and Shelbee Rodgers are going to that are redshirt juniors (Ashley Brignac, have to step up in 2011 if the Cajuns want to continue their dominance in the circle.
