I never thought I would have such wonderful friends when we moved to Gettysburg five years ago and that includes all of you. But this particular friend is my “cohort in crime” so to speak. She is even a “Lutheran”, but I don’t hold that against her. Her name is Joyce Ryman. Some of you may G P C know her as she is from Gettysburg and was a long time teacher in Fairfield. Anyway, we were talking a couple of weeks ago and I was saying that I couldn’t read fast enough to discuss new books Book for my Grapevine articles. She popped right up and said she had the perfect book. So she lent Corner me her copy. I read it one cold morning sitting next to the fireplace.

It is a small book but a powerful read. Ok, ok, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. The title is the dash (yes small case) authored by Linda Ellis and Mac Anderson. Well, let me tell you I was knocked off my comfortable chair. I laughed and I cried a little too. Birthdays and funeral dates aren’t so important, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years…”

So you can imagine what the read was like. Linda Ellis actually wrote the poem the dash and it is beautiful. What is important is what you do with the time in between that matters. She covers the entire spectrum of slowing down, feel- ings, forgiveness, love, appreciation, respect, smiling, etc. She makes you realize, as does Mr. Anderson, with his short stories, why the dash in-between those dates is so important.

What is amazing is how this poem fits into your Christian life. These are the very things that Jesus talks about and says how important they are for you to grow in God’s love.

It will take you all of 30 minutes to read this little book, but it will be the best 30 minutes you spend with a book. It certainly makes you stop and think about what could change in your life so that you can make the dash a meaningful experience.

Tim McGraw wrote a song to honor his father, baseball great Tug McGraw, Live Like You Were Dying. I truly believe this book is telling us to do that and make a difference in the world and the people around you, not to mention your- self, too!

I have just purchased this book for the Crane Library and I know it will not stay on the shelf long at all. I hope that once you read it you will let me know what you thought of it. I know my friend Joyce will also be interested in hearing your thoughts too.

I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and hope that you and your families are all consumed by the wonderful Christmas Spirit that is Jesus Christ! I know that this will be a special one for my family and me as we rejoice in good health!

Til next time, hope Santa Claus brings you a great book to read. Keep on Reading!
