Tutu Puoane Mama Africa, the new album by the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, pays tribute to Miriam Makeba, possibly the greatest South African singer ever. Tutu Puoane, who hails from South Africa, was invited to sing and choose the songs. Seven arrangers were commissioned to arrange these songs from ‘Mama fact sheet Africa’s’ repertoire for one of Europe’s best big bands, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. Este ano estão programados 27 concertos em 19 dias, envolvendo mais de 300 músicos em Viseu. O piano reconquista o palco da competição, por conta do 2.º Concurso Internacional Piano de Viseu, com a atribuição de prémios financeiros. No campo da formação, o festival propõe 18 workshops e masterclasses para estudantes e profissionais de música.     FRANK VAGANÉE Alto- and soprano saxophonist, arranger, composer, artistic director BJO, teacher °1966 www.frankvaganee.com www.brusselsjazzorchestra.com www.jazznbeyond.be www.luca-arts.be Frank Vaganée was born on March 19, 1966 in Mechelen, Belgium. He received a classical musical education at the Conservatory of Mechelen and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (1974-1985). Frank got improvisation lessons from the American jazz saxophonist John Ruocco at the Antwerp Jazz Studio (1983-1986) and studied composition and arranging techniques at the Hochshule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne (1993-1995) with another American, Bob Brookmeyer. In 1998 he moved to New York to study. Frank has led his own bands and composed for both large and small orchestral forces since 1983. He was a freelancer at the BRT (Belgian Radio and Television) Jazz Orchestra and BRT Big Band from 1986-1991. He was a member of the ‘Timeless Orchestra’ from the Netherlands, with which he toured throughout Europe and Japan (1989-1993) and represented Belgium in 1989 in the EBU-big band (European Broadcasting Union) in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. In 1991 Frank was named best jazz talent by the Belgian Jazz Press. In 1993 he won the CERA Bank’s “Youth and Music” Award. In 1994 he and the BJO won the “Prix Nicolas Dor”. In 2001 Frank won the “Django d’Or” award. In 2006 Frank and the BJO won the “Flemish Culture Award”. In 2011 he won the “Jazzmozaïk [magazine] Award”. Between 2011 and 2013, Frank was artist-in-residence in his hometown Mechelen, Belgium. In this capacity, he realized numerous projects in Mechelen, including: the jazz oratorio “Say, sing it, the city are we” in collaboration with poet Roger De Neef, in the context of the Newtopia festival, “The end of the world”, a play in collaboration with theater ‘t Arsenaal, “Serendipity”, a musical score in addition to the exhibition of artist painter Beniti Cornelis.

    Der Weltmeister Text: Jörg Manhold / Fotos: Ray Tarantino Der französische Akkordeonist Richard Galliano ist ein herausragender Vertreter des Jazz-Akkordeonspiels. Er feierte im vorigen Jahr sein 30-jähriges Jubiläum als Plattenkünstler Es gibt diese innigen Momente, da schließt Richard Galliano die Augen und legt sein Kinn vorsichtig auf seiner Victoria ab. Dann klingt sein Akkordeon wie in ferne Sphären entrückt. Und es schleicht sich ein feiner Ton zurück in das Ohr seiner Zuhörer, wie ihn sonst nur eine Flöte in den allerhöchsten Registern zu erzeugen vermag. Der Mann am Akkordeon ist dann ganz eins mit seinem Instrument, mit seiner Musik. Dann explodiert plötzlich die ganze Klanggewalt dessen, was Gallianos zehn Finger auszulösen vermögen. Man spürt, sein Instrument kann die voluminöse Vollchörigkeit einer ganzen Kirchenorgel ersetzen. Und immer wieder blitzt eine Virtuosität auf, die auf der Welt ihresgleichen sucht. Richard Galliano wurde am 12. Dezember 1950 im Viertel Le Cannet im französischen Cannes geboren. Sein Vater Luciano, auch Akkordeonist, stammte aus Italien und brachte ihm schon mit vier Jahren behutsam das Akkordeonspiel nahe. Der kleine Richard lernte auch Posaune, Klavier, Bandoneon sowie die Accordina (Knopfmelodica) und erhielt Unterricht in Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt und Komposition. Aber schon früh kristallisierte sich eine starke Hingezogenheit zum Akkordeon heraus. Das ging so weit, dass er als kleiner Junge ein Akkordeon aus Papier baute. Mit zehn Jahren hörte Galliano erstmals Art van Damme, den damals wie heute stilbildenden Jazzakkordeonisten. Heute betrachtet der Franzose diesen Moment als tiefes Erweckungserlebnis. Für ihn war die erste Begegnung mit Jazz eine Offenbarung. In der Musikwahrnehmung hat er sich aber nie nur auf ein Instrument fokussiert.
