THE BENEDICTINE FOUNDATIONS IN XISHAN AND CHENGDU, 1929-1952 Fr. The story of the Benedictines of Szechwan Province during the first half of the Twentieth Century can be divided into three epochs or phases encompassing two geographic locations. The three phases correspond to the first three superiors of the monastery, each of whom possessed a unique vision of how Benedictine monasticism could best serve the needs of the Catholic Church in China. The two geographic locations are: Xishan, near Shunqing, where the community was first established in 1929; and Chengdu, the capital of Szechwan Province where in 1942 the monks were compelled by the vicissitudes World War II to seek refuge 1: CONTEMPLATIVE ASPIRATIONS 1927-1933: Xihan, Prior Jehan Joliet In 1926 Dom Jehan Joliet, a monk of the Abbey of Solesmes, and Dom Pie de Cocqueau of the Abbey of St. André (now know as SintAndries, Zevenkerken), departed the port of Marseilles for Beijing. They were to establish a new monastic foundation that would be a canonical dependency of St. André.1 The Benedictine Abbey of St. André had been designated at its inception as a “Monastery for the Missions”. Since 1898 the community had been committed to monastic missionary work in Brazil by its founder, Abbot Gerard Van Caloen; and in 1910 his successor, Theodore Neve, pledged the community to work in Africa by accepting the Apostolic Prefecture of Katanga in the Congo. Studied without interruption for a milennium and a half, it is surprising just how significant an eftèct the invention of printing, a relatively late occurrence, had upon the Talmud. The ramifications of Gutenberg's invention are well known. One of the consequences not foreseen by the early practitioners of the "Holy Work" and commonly associated with the Industrial Revolution, was the introduction of standardization. The spread of printing meant that distinct scribal styles became generic fonts, erratic spellngs became uni- form and sequential numbering of pages became standard. The first printed books (incunabula) were typeset copies of manu- scripts, lacking pagination and often not uniform. As a result, incunabu- la share many characteristics with manuscripts, such as leaving a blank space for the first letter or word to be embellshed with an ornamental woodcut, a colophon at the end of the work rather than a title page, and the use of signatures but no pagination.2 The Gutenberg Bibles, for example, were printed with blank spaces to be completed by calligra- phers, accounting for the varying appearance of the surviving Bibles. SIPOVIČ I Those who would wish to study the history of Christianity in Byelorussia should certainly pursue the history of the Orthodox and Catholic churches, and to a lesser extent, that of various groups of Protestants. One must bear in mind that the Catholic Church in Byelorussia followed and still follows two Rites: the Latin and the Oriental-Byzantine. It is acceptable to call the latter by the name Uniate. In Byelorussia it dates back to the Synod of Brest-Litoŭsk in the year 1596. But here we propose to deal exclusively with the Catholic Church of the Latin Rite, and will further limit ourselves to a small section of its history, namely the foundation of the diocese of Minsk. Something also will be said of its bishops and admin istrators. Exactly how and when the Latin form of Catholicism came to Byelorussia is a question which has not been sufficiently elucidated. Here then are the basic historical facts. From the beginning of the acceptance of Christianity in Byelo russia until the end of the 14th century, the population followed the Eastern Rite and until the end of the 12th century it formed part of the universal Christian Church. After the erection of a Latin bishopric in Vilna in 1387, and after the acceptance of Christianity in the Latin Rite by the Lithuanians, this episcopal see itself and its clergy started to propagate this rite. It is well-known that Jahajła had virtually the same relations with the pagan Lithuanians as with Orthodox Ukrainians and Byelo russians. -

Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

Our Predecessor St. Celestine I hailed him as 'good defender of the Catholic faith,'[1] as 'excellent priest,'[2] as 'apostolic man.'[3] The ecumenical Council of Chalcedon not only used his doctrine for the detecting and refuting of the latest errors, but went so far as to compare it with the learning of St. Leo the Great;[4] and in fact the latter praised and commended the writings of this great Doctor because of their perfect agreement with the faith of the holy Fathers.[5] The fifth ecumenical Council, held at Constantinople, treated St. Cyril's authority with similar reverence[6] and many years later, during the controversy about the two wills in Christ, his teaching was rightly and triumphantly vindicated, both in the first Lateran Council [7] and in the sixth ecumenical Council, against the false charge of being tainted with the error of Monothelitism. He was, as Our saintly Predecessor Agatho proclaimed, 'a defender of the truth'[8] and 'a consistent teacher of the orthodox faith.'[9] 3. -

According to sources he led an adventurous life, and spent time in out of the way colonial outposts. He composed music seemingly of substance, and for ensembles normally associated with higher class music, yet despite this, we have only one work surviving by this active musician and prolific composer. Much of his life and professional activity has been thoroughly explored in Graeme Skinner’s important thesis on early Australian composition.1 More is found in his website of Australian composers, and the accompanying chronology of Australian composition.2 Both sources are important documents.3 The birth date of Joseph Gautrot is unknown, but there are various mentions of his early life and career in an obituary in Bell’s Life of 4 February 1854.4 In the obituary he was cited as being a member of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, probably as a musician, and was present during the Russian Campaign of 1812. -

Y.M. (Anne) McLay. Now - as in his lifetime - Bishop James Quinn is a controversial, and to many an unattractive, though highly significant figure of the foundation years of the Catholic Church in Queensland. My interest was aroused in discovering his true personality through my work in the history of Catholic education in this State, especially that of Mother Vincent Whitty and the first Sisters of Mercy. After several years of research I am still ambivalent towards him. I feel, however, this ambivalence is due to the paradoxes inherent in his personality rather than to any deficiency in my research. I have tried to show in this thesis the complexity of his character that these paradoxes caused. Bishop Quinn died in 1881, but the foundations of his work in Queensland were laid by 1875. To appreciate the shape of the Church that soared grandly from these foundations, to understand the conflict and the turmoil that surrounded the man and his creation, the bishop must be first seen in his original environment, Ireland and Rome. -

July 10, 1964 The Convict Cart Through the streets of Cork in 1818 there rumbled a wagon load of convicts. Bound for Botany Bay, the twenty or thirty prisoners were in irons on their way to the docks. A young priest stopped the driver and learnt of their destination. On the spur of the moment he ran into a neighbouring bookshop, bought a bundle of prayer books and threw them into the cart, vowing to follow his countrymen to the ends of the earth, if needed, to save their souls. In retrospect, that handful of books was the scattering of his first seeds of Catholicism in Australia, for the young priest was John Joseph Therry, secretary to Bishop Murphy of Cork. Such an act was typical of the warm-hearted and impulsive young man ordained only three years earlier. Born in the City of Cork in 1790, he was able to enjoy the luxury of a private tutor with his brothers, James and Stephen and his sister, Jane Anne, during his early years. As a seminarian at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, he seems to have been a thorough if not brilliant student. His family was hit by financial losses in those years. "The course of my college studies was interrupted at an early stage by family embarrassment," he wrote in 1819. At his own request he was ordained prematurely by the Archbishop of Dublin in 1815. Even before Father O'Flynn had sailed on his ill-fated mission to New South Wales, Father Therry had seriously considered volunteering for that mission field. -
