Kimball, Miami University, Professor Emeritus dward Lansdale (1908-1987) gave up his job with a California advertizing firm to serve as an intelligence officer in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Still with the agency after the war—now renamed the Central Intelligence Agency—he was assigned the role of adviser to the EPhilippine government in its fight to suppress the left-leaning Hukbalahap peasant guerrilla rebellion. The fundamental elements of Lansdale’s counter-guerrilla strategy included reform of the government, propaganda and ‘civic-action’ programs that addressed the peasantry’s concerns, black ops, psychological warfare, and the development of counter-guerrilla military units, tactics, and programs. Lansdale also played an important role in assisting reformist Ramon Magsaysay’s rise to the presidency of the Philippines. For Max Boot, the author of this mammoth 715-page book (including back matter), Lansdale’s counter-guerrilla methods in the Philippines constituted the “road” or strategy that the United States should later have followed in Vietnam– but did not. (In 1959, one of Lansdale’s colleagues, Sam Wilson, renamed and broadened the term ‘counter- guerrilla’ warfare as ‘counterinsurgency’ warfare [321-322].) Landsdale, as a model for fictional characters in three novels – English, American, and French – dealing with the early years of the American involvement in Vietnam. Landsdale’s political career and the historical background of his contribution to the creation of the anti-Communist state of South Vietnam is outlined, followed by an examination of his fictionalization in Graham Greene’s The Quiet American (1955), Eugene Burdick and William J. Lederer’s The Ugly American (1958), and Jean Lartéguy’s Yellow Fever (Eng. Transl. 1965). It is seen that Greene’s model is disputed, while all three novels actually underestimate Landsdale’s historical importance.

Stewart, The University of Western Ontario aniel Immerwahr has written a brief, entertaining, and revealing piece that uses William Lederer and Eugene Burdick’s The Ugly American1 as both a lens through which to view, and an artifact to study, a particular slice of Cold War America: the U.S. effort to combat Communism in Southeast Asia at theD high point of decolonization. Likening the novel to an onion, Immerwahr peels away the layers to understand what the book consciously and unconsciously has to say about American “designs” on the region in the late 1950s “and the secret means used to pursue them” (9). Central to his analysis are the three of the novel’s protagonists—Homer Atkins, Father John X. Finian, and Colonel Edwin Hillandale—and their real- life counterparts: community development expert Albert Mayer; doctor and international volunteer Tom Dooley; and CIA operative Colonel Edward Lansdale. Through a critical reading of the exploits of these characters and their human sources of inspiration, Immerwahr is able to reveal some of Lederer and Burdick’s narrow assumptions about the failure of American efforts to stamp out Communism in the region as well as the broader, more explanatory, “omissions” regarding the reality of American foreign policy that Lederer and Burdick’s assumptions cover up (13).

Tucker Date approved: May 27, 2014 ii Abstract This study traces origins, operation, successes and failures of the People-to-People program featured during the second term of the Eisenhower presidency. The program was a product of and a reaction to the Cold War international conflicts that emanated from diametrically opposed ideologies of democracies and the communist world. U.S. claims to the superiority of democracy over communism were rooted in immediate post-war America’s quest for world leadership. The People-to-People campaign was a government-backed popular movement, which spread in the 1950s and expanded into the 1960s. It was partially coordinated and partially funded by the United States Information Agency during its first few years, with the expectation that it would attract private as well as grassroots support once it was launched. This dissertation explores People-to-People’s various programs and projects including the Sister- Cities and the University chapter as models for secular voluntary movements of ordinary citizens who were committed to improving mutual understanding between peoples from different cultures.

    45th Reunion October 6, 2006 Faculty Notes October 6, 2006 The faculty members for whom tonight’s tables are named, and whose profiles are yours to keep, were selected based on suggestions from classmates as well as how much information was available—plus how much time I had to devote to this! They are all deceased. Some Google listings went on forever (Kerr and Seaborg, of course, but also Teller and tenBroek), while I could hardly find anything on others, which is why they didn’t make the cut. The biographical information, which I hope is accurate, was gleaned from a number of sources, but I relied most heavily on our good friends at the Library, which is an absolute treasure trove. It was especially useful at long-distance. Please thank David Duer and Susan Snyder, who responded promptly to emails. I took them at their word and have reproduced large chunks of material, some of it seriously edited! The oral histories that are available online are also quite fascinating. I spent hours reading Arleigh Williams’ recollections and barely scratched the surface. The Class of 1931 is to be commended for funding this project: “To further the documentation of the University's impact on state and nation, Berkeley's Class of 1931, as their class gift on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary, endowed an oral history series titled “The University of California, Source of Community Leaders.” The series reflects President Sproul's vision by recording the contributions of the University's alumni, faculty members and administrators. The first oral history focused on President Sproul himself.

Yet despite the textual simplicity of the novel, it had a complex and layered backstory. Its characters were not wholly fictional but were based on real-life models, whose work in Asia laid the backdrop for the novel’s vignettes. Adding an additional layer of complexity, two of those models lived covert lives—one as a closeted gay man working with the Central Intelligence Agency (cia), another as a cia officer tasked with putting down peasant insurgencies—that belied their public images.
