As usual, the Ch Woodsmoke’s Ten Cents A Dance JH CD day started out as a crisp fall day. The weather (Br L Lavigne, Ow C Fitzgerald, L Lavigne) went uphill from there! It was perfect weather for 2) Blackburn Gordon Hill Manika our beautiful black and tans! The day began with DC Tartana’s Diggin-est Dog JH x Ch Gordon Hill our usual flurry of set up then we were ready. Rothesay Of Bute JH First up was the Obedience/Rally trial judged by (Br/Ow J DeCasteja, S DeSilver) Lynda Moore. The dogs were on their best behavior 3) Glenlea Some Like It Hot CGC and there were many qualifiers cheered on by an GCh Sastya’s Twelfth Night By NCM x enthusiastic audience. Ch Woodsmoke’s Ten Cents A Dance JH CD (Br L Lavigne, Ow P, J Lundy) Following was the puppy sweepstakes, judged by 4) Sandpiper’s Sea To Shining Sea TarTan’s own Karen Gatchell. As always, it was a Ch Sandpiper’s Castles By The Sea x Ch Sandpiper’s tough job as all of the puppies were splendid! 923 TarTan Fall Field Trial

The TarTan Field Trial on October 26 – 27 was a spectacularly beautiful autumn weekend with perfect temperatures and clear skies. Again, our entry was small but we were graced with Gordon puppy entries from both Phyllis Lundy and Allison Treadwell and we thank them for their support. Because I don’t believe enough TarTan members realized that we had a non- regular walking hunting dog stake, we will offer it again at the next TarTan trial. Unfortunately, it did not run for lack of entries. Our excellent Line Marshals were Jane de Casteja and Larry Clifford, who kept everything running smoothly. Many thanks to our judging panel: Laura Bedford, Aaron Crown, Mike Ernest, John Malone, Tom Mercier and Bob Vaulding. Warmest thanks to Larry Clifford, who is a most wonderful field trial secretary and who is passing the torch to Robin Marshall, who will be our next secretary. Our enthusiastic committee of hardworking members included Candice Bell, Larry Clifford, Jane de Casteja, Robin Marshall, and Ralph Schmid. Candice and Ralph manned the kitchen and we enjoyed many excellent food dona- tions from members. I would like to make special mention of Candice’s Salmon Chowder, which was delicious and gone in no time. Our once again excellent Judges’ Dinner feast on Saturday night was prepared by superb firehouse chef, Jim Blaschke and the lovely Brenda Scully. Karen Gatchell came down from Maine to bird plant for the whole day on Sunday – we were most grateful for her help and look forward to her on the committee in the Spring. Jim D’Amico, two of our judges, and one of our competitors planted birds. Robin, Debby Freidus, Larry and Jane joined Ralph and Candice to do clean up. Robin did a fabulous job cleaning up the bird room and Larry was busy showing Robin the sec- retarial ropes, sweeping up and finishing up the last details long after most had departed. We were again delighted to have a qualifying Junior Handler place second with her parents’ Vizsla in the Ama- teur Walking Derby.

Peanut Butter Bones

1 package dry yeast 1/2 cup lukewarm water 1 cup mashed potatoes 1 cup milk 1/4 cup molasses 1/2 cup chicken stock 1 cup chunky peanut butter 1 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup rye flour 1/2 cup rice flour 1 egg 2 cups all-purpose white flour

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 ° F.

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in water. In a large saucepan, mix together the potatoes, milk, molasses, stock, and peanut butter. Heat,stirring frequently, until boiling. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Add yeast mixture. Gradually blend in the egg, wheat, rye, and rice flours. Add enough white flour to form a stiff dough. Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Shape the dough into a ball and roll to 1/2-inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut out biscuits. Place on ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4-inch apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool overnight. Makes several dozen bones that freeze well--and have the consistency of pizza crusts, a favorite snack for most of our spoiled dogs!

Pixie The Rover Reporter: Fall and Winter Report

Hi, it’s me Pixie, your rover reporter. TarTan had quite a busy fall and early winter! We had our fall Field Trial, fall Hunt Test and Specialty show all in a super short time! As you know, we Gordons are so talented that we can get all of these events done and hardly break a sweat. We do get pretty hungry though! Fortunately, there are always snacks and even some hot dogs or hamburgers to help with that. Hey, at the Specialty there were even donuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of the Specialty, we had a really fun Rally and Obedience trial. Yours truly did her freestyle rally routine. It actually matched up with the signs well enough to get a couple of ribbons and a treat bag!!!!!!! YAHOO, TarTan does rock! You should have seen the beautifully groomed Gordons in the ring. There is nothing prettier, if I do say so myself. Everyone was having such a great time. As usual, the smells of lunch nearly made me swoon with delight. People ate a lot, but did share a little. I got a very good roll to go with my donuts. I guess that the ribbons got me that. Maybe I’ll get another one next year!!!

The Field Trial and Hunt Test were really fun. Gordons LOVE hunting as you know and jump at any chance they get to hunt some of those adorable little quails! Don’t forget to enter every chance you can, we will always be grateful and will get ribbons for you to take home.

Be careful not to gain weight this winter so you can be in shape for the spring season. Do some snowshoeing, hiking or ball fetching to keep yourself in shape. And always remember, along with exercise you need lots of snacks!
