This missing information creates a lack of awareness for all social work students in their education of a vulnerable population. Early inclusion of transgender content into graduate diversity courses is essential for building a foundation for cultural competence. A curriculum was constructed from a deep secondary meta analysis of existing information including, electronic and academic sources, historical data, books, film, and other relevant resources, including the researcher‘s personal involvement in the transgender community. This analysis helped to determine what was most relevant to include in an introductory transgender curriculum for social work students including; terminology, history, political struggles and the specific and cultural needs of transgender people. The curriculum is designed to invite social work students to examine their own biases toward gender variant people, as well as aid in building on their iv repertoire of social work skills and strategies for practice within the context of human diversity. _______________________, Committee Chair Susan Talamantes Eggman, PhD, MSW _______________________ Date v DEDICATION Of all the people in my life who have traveled this journey with me, I especially want to thank my partner, Katie, for her undying love and support. Comparing the life of Trans People in HK to that in UK, prior to 2013 When I first visited Hong Kong (HK) in 1997, HK’s law took a very similar position to that in the United Kingdom (UK). UK law still looked to the 1971 English Court of Appeal case, Corbett v Corbett1 in which Ormrod LJ had held that transsexual people were always to be regarded as members of the gender ascribed to them at birth. It did not matter how their family, friends, employers, or colleagues knew them, or what they wore; the law continued to ignore their new gender identities.2 Prejudice and discrimination were rife, and trans people in HK lived mostly marginal lives, struggling to raise the money needed to access basic health care, and other treatments such as beard removal. Even when they had undergone extensive gender reassignment treatments or surgeries, they were regarded as if still of the gender ascribed to them at birth. For example; a trans woman who was prosecuted for a crime would be prosecuted as a man, and if convicted, placed in a male prison. If she had previously led a private life where very few knew about her change of gender, on discovering a woman treated as a man by the court, the newspapers would exploit the story.

Transgender groups have participated in activism and education around many issues, including gender expectations, depathologization, poverty, and discrimination. Like many other marginalized people, our history is not always preserved, and we have few places to turn to learn the stories of our predecessors. This chapter is an unabridged version of the United States History chapter of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, a resource guide by and for transgender communities. Despite lim- iting its focus to the United States, this chapter still contained so much important in- formation that would need to be cut to meet the book’s length requirements that a decision was made to publish it separately in its original form. We cannot possibly tell the stories of the many diverse people who together make up our history, but we hope that this is a beginning. AbOut the AuthOR Genny Beemyn has published and spoken extensively on the experiences and needs of trans people, particularly the lives of gender nonconforming students. They have written or edited many books/journal issues, including The Lives of Transgender People (with Sue Rankin; Columbia University Press, 2011) and special issues of the Journal of LGBT Youth on “Trans Youth” and “Supporting Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Children and Youth” and a special issue of the Journal of Homosexuality on “LGBTQ Campus Experiences.” Genny’s most recent work is A Queer Capital: A History of Gay Life in Washington, D.C.

    Chapter 2 A History of Trans-People Trans-people have existed throughout history. The following list is a select few of the more notable of them. They are sorted by the year they transitioned, not when they were born. Trans and transsexual are recent terms, so historically many were called by other names such as transvestite. Other chapters are planned for openly trans politicians. Here they will be sorted by political “rank” (municipal, state/province, federal, international) and by year of office when they were openly Trans. There are thousands more who have not made these, or any other, list. There are many online lists of transgender celebrities, most of whom are not included here. I have arbitrarily excluded heterosexual transvestites such as Virginia Prince. Most of the following is taken from Wikipedia, where not indicated otherwise. 3000 through 2000 BC in ancient Assyria, there were homosexual and transgender cult prostitutes, who took part in public processions, singing, dancing, wearing costumes, sometimes wearing women's clothes and carrying female symbols, even at times performing the act of giving birth. Some Assyrian priests were gay men who cross-dressed. Freely pictured art of anal intercourse, practiced as part of a religious ritual, dated from the 3rd millennium BC and onwards. 2000 BC, Hijras have a recorded history of over 4,000 years recorded history in the Indian subcontinent from antiquity onwards as suggested by the Kama Sutra (a Hindu text on human sexual behavior written sometime between 400 BCE and 200 CE). In South Asia, a Hijra is a transgender individual who was assigned male at birth.
