wireTHE April 2014 www.royalsignals.mod.uk The Magazine of The Royal Corps of Signals ROYAL SIGNALS INSTITUTION Deane-Drummond Prize Essay Competition 2014 (Closing Date - 31st July 2014) 1st Prize - £1000 2nd Prize - £500 3rd Prize - £250 Context: “Operations in Afghanistan have served to highlight the vital role of information on the modern battlefield. Indeed, the richness of the operational information now routinely delivered at all levels of command down to sub-unit and below has fundamentally changed the information landscape to such an extent that it may be time to re-examine the current division of responsibilities for information management (IM).”. Question: Should all information necessarily be treated in the same way; which aspects of the information landscape belong to commanders and their staffs, and which are best left to R SIGNALS personnel? The essay should demonstrate understanding of the IM challenges and the steps to be taken to mitigate against them, highlighting specific recommendations for R SIGNALS. Rules of the Competition: Entrants must be serving (regular or reserve) members of the R SIGNALS or the QG SIGNALS. Essays should be between 1500 – 2500 words and submitted in electronic format. Classified matters must not be included. References and quotes must be in accordance with the Harvard System of Referencing. Essays should be sent to the Corps Adjt under unit arrangements. The closing date for entries is 31 Jul 14. • Wirethe December 2011
wireTHE December 2011 www.royalsignals.mod.uk The Magazine of The Royal Corps of Signals A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE MASTER OF SIGNALS Lieutenant General Robert Baxter CBE DSc FBCS CITP FIET The year has not been an easy one with the first tranches of redundancy and sadly more to follow. All that I would say here is that the quality of our people remains something very special and attractive to any employer with their heads screwed on: a message I deliver at any and every opportunity. The year has also seen some real successes: the initial difficulties with Falcon being overcome; and the roll out of the latest version of Bowman with the Corps very much in the lead. And of course our operational performance in Afghanistan, Libya and around the world remains a source of immense pride to me as we deliver signals intelligence, communication and information systems and electronic counter measures. Sadly we have also seen deaths and injuries and I know that our thoughts and best wishes are with those left behind and those coping with serious injuries. Our Royal Colonel, Princess Anne, has had a number of excellent visits and medal parades. I get the impression that you and your families really enjoy these events. Her Royal Highness certainly does and so do I. Well done to those involved as you have shown the Corps off to excellent effect. On my own visits thank you for your patience in explaining some of the complex and challenging things you do to someone, me, who was brought up in an era of punch cards and main frame computers! More seriously I am very impressed with what you achieve as soldiers, technically and on the sports field.

1 Create PDF files without this message by purchasing novaPDF printer (http://www.novapdf.com) The Journal of the Royal Signals Institution VOL XXIX WINTER 2010 NO 2 This special 90th Anniversary edition of the Journal comes at the end of another busy year, which saw the continuation of our popular workshops for MOD, Government and industry, as well as a very successful Seminar in October and the London Lecture and Dinner in November. The latter saw a capacity audience assembled to hear the address by Mr Andrew Manley, the Director, Defence Commercial. In between, the Blandford Lecture programme has been well supported, and attracted guest speakers of the calibre of Professor Richard Aldritch, Brigadier Allan Mallinson and Kate Adie. In this edition, we reprint some interesting articles from earlier editions of the Journal and its predecessor, the Royal Signals Quarterly Journal, which have some resonance with present times. Our technical section features an article on FALCON deployed on Op Herrick, and a special article exposing the relative merits of the Defence Information Infrastructure, of interest to many. The popular historical section includes an account of the Ashanti Expedition from one of noted contributors, and an account of the retiral from service of the Ptarmigan communication system. The next issue of the Journal is planned for Spring 2011; I look forward to receiving your articles!
