NEW FROM WALTHERS EMBARGO UNTIL 12:00 PM CST JUNE 11, 2013 Santa Fe’s San Francisco Chief Joins Walthers Name Train Fleet June 11, 2013, Milwaukee, WI. - Beginning in October, Walthers will roll out its latest HO Scale name train, the San Francisco Chief . Based on Santa Fe’s last new streamliner introduced in 1954, the complete train features seven all-new cars (including the signature “Big Domes” several sleepers, a 74' baggage car and lunch counter diner dormitory), correct Santa Fe coaches and sleepers, plus a limited-run of 37-Class passenger F units with new details, all part of the superbly detailed WalthersProto ® family of products. Cars will feature Walthers exclusive real metal finish simulating stainless steel as appropriate, which matches current Super Chief and El Capitan cars, opening new possibilities for modeling authentic Santa Fe passenger consists. For the most demanding modeler and collector, a limited-run 12-car Deluxe Edition train with factory-installed LED interior lighting and 200+ Preiser figures will also be available at participating hobby shops and walthers.com. Fast Facts: From its introduction, the San Francisco Chief was one of Santa Fe’s most popular trains. Offering direct service from Chicago to the city by the bay — in this case Oakland and later Richmond, where passengers boarded buses for downtown San Francisco — the train also provided convenient service to intermediate stops along 2500+-miles of the road’s southern main line. With affordable coach and sleeping car accommodations, a choice of casual or fine dining, and a superb view from its “Big Dome” dormitory-lounge cars, the San Francisco Chief was a favorite with business and vacation travelers alike. Its fast schedule (47-1/2 hours) made it a perfect choice for the Post Office as well, and considerable volumes of mail were handled year around. In 1964, additional High-Level coaches arrived from Budd to provide additional seats for the popular train, which would remain in service until 1971. Several of the train’s cars went on to serve Amtrak and many have since been preserved.
