Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract As popular music eclipsed Hollywood as the most powerful mode of seduction of Western youth, rock-stars erupted through the counter-culture as potent political figures. Following its sensational arrival, the politics of popular musical culture has however moved from the shared experience of protest movements and picket lines and to an individualised and celebrified consumerist experience. As a consequence what emerged, as a controversial and subversive phenomenon, has been de-fanged and transformed into a mechanism of establishment support. -

ABSTRACT This thesis introduces the reader to rock music in Durban from 1963 to 1985, tracing the development of rock in Durban from rock'n'roll to hard core punk. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans. -

Interview from Spew, #87 February 2015 (originally published in abridged form) 2014’s triple disc behemoth Harshest Realm is the self-titled debut release of a musical project spearheaded by one Garret Kriston, a Chicago based musician whose formative years were split between formal studies and basement recording before toiling within the city’s DIY/punk scene. Now he has emerged with a sprawling document of what surely is a vast arsenal of artistic capabilities. Harshest Realm is now available via Coolatta Lounge CDs, along with fellow traveler Marshall Stacks’s latest jammers Lost in Sim City and the Snake Eyes/Point Blank single. ___________________________________________ Let’s start by giving the folks at home some background information. I’m particularly interested in learning how your relationship with music has developed over the years, so as to better understand where the music on the Harshest Realm album came from. No problem. I’m going to not hold back from rattling off influences and favorites, if that’s okay. Totally. The more the merrier. I was born at home on March 3rd, 1990 in Oak Park, down the street from Chicago’s west side, near Harlem between Harrison and Roosevelt. My earliest memory of music was seeing archival footage of The Beatles playing on the Ed Sullivan Show, which made playing guitar in a band and singing original songs seem like the most appealing activity in existence. I might have been two going on three, and I don’t remember much else from then besides puking in my crib and seeing carrots in it (the puke.) My older brother was discovering “classic rock,” so there were rock related bootleg VHS tapes in the house that would get played over and over. -

Syllabus for RESPECT: Minority Voices in Early Soul, Reggae, Rock, and Folk OLLI UC Berkeley Fall 2021 Mondays, 9:30am-11am Instructor: Richie Unterberger Week One: Social Commentary and Protest in Soul Music, Pt. 1 In Soul of the 1960s While occasional soul songs of the first half of the 1960s had observations about the world at large, for the most part they dealt with romantic love, as well as a good share of tunes about partying and dancing. Many of these songs were great and classic. But wasn’t until the late 1960s that compositions commenting about the American (and sometimes specifically African-American) experience became a significant part of soul music. Curtis Mayfield, principal singer-songwriter of the Impressions, was perhaps the first to regularly express such sentiments. By the late 1960s, other stars like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Nina Simone, and Sly & the Family Stone were also doing so occasionally. After some initial resistance on the part of its ownership and producers, Motown Records also made significant forays into this territory, most often with the Temptations, but also with the Supremes and other artists. Week Two: Social Commentary and Protest in Soul Music, Pt. 2 In Soul of the 1970s In the first half of the 1970s, socially conscious soul music sometimes gets tougher and more militant. At Motown, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder not only successfully fight for more artistic freedom to record more lyrically aware material, but also focus on long- playing albums as a medium of expression that are at least as important as hit singles. -
