The joy of Hamirkalyani Raagam It’s difficult to seek an apt adjective to describe the joy that Hamirkalyani brings. Smooth contours, silky glides, delicate yet intricate phrases characterise this raga. This raga is North Indian in origin; in Hindustani music, the raag Kedar (of the Kalyan thaat) is close to Hamirkalyani. While discussing Hamirkalyani, mention has to be made of the two madhyamas — the suddha and prati varieties — in the raga’s structure. The suddha madhyama is technically the bhashanga (foreign) note and is present in the avarohana. The prevalent order of swaras in this raga would be SPMPDNS / SNDPMmGPmRS, (M — prati madhyama; m —suddha madhyama). Rules cannot fetter the spirit and grammar cannot cripple the gait of this raga. When fine artistes cleverly weave the madhyamas in a phrase, the raga comes alive in all its glory. The exaggerated glides from the pancama to the sadja heighten its grandeur. Saranga would be considered an allied raga, and subtle differences in swara structure differentiate the two. I recall learning ‘Parimala Ranganatham’ in this raga from my guru. When I asked Sri Calcutta Krishnamurthy as to where Dikshitar had hidden the raga mudra in this song, he said it lies in the phrase ‘bhajehamveera nutham’. When I could not figure it out, he pointed out that Hamirkalyani used to be referred to as ‘Hamveeru’. Dikshitar has also composed ‘Purahara Nandana’ in this raga. Thyagaraja’s ‘Manamuleda’ is a masterpiece, while Subbaraya Sastri’s ‘Venkatasaila Vihara’ is soulful. The tiruppavai, ‘Thoomani Madathu’, merits mention, while Oothukadu’s ‘Nadamurali’ and Swati Tirunal’s ‘Gangeya Vasana’ are attractive pieces too.

  • Ingenuity and Imagination How International Performing Arts Venues Are Opening Their Doors
July 2021 ® ON Stagevolume 10 • issue 12 Ingenuity and Imagination How international performing arts venues are opening their doors Chairman’s Note Is there a glimmer of hope that we are gradually returning to normalcy and the prophets of doom, who predict all sorts of dire consequences including a third wave, a new strain of the virus and a permanent blow to our lifestyle, are all proved wrong? History seems to suggest that after every major catastrophe, people do return to their normal way of life. That is the nature of fellow human beings and they fight back furiously when outside influences attack their way of living. I hope and pray this is so with the present situation also. The signs are good. Europe is leisurely returning to regular performances and the sight of the huge crowd at the recent French Open tennis tournament warmed the cockles of my heart. I am sure that with the innovative minds of art lovers, ways will be found to ensure that we are not deprived any longer of our dose of artistic performances. The NCPA will make every attempt to return to its normally welcoming ways and I do hope that all of you will adhere to the norms and conditions that are set to attend major performances. I believe that this occasion will surely come our way sooner rather than later. Say a little prayer for us. Khushroo N. Suntook NCPA Chairman Khushroo N. • Dancing Rasa from Bombay Cinema to Reality TV
CHAPTER 6 SENSORY SCREENS, DIGITIZED DESIRES Dancing Rasa from Bombay Cinema to Reality TV PALLABI CHAKRAVORTY The evolution of Indian dances on screen emerged in Bombay cinema within the dia lectic between tradition and modernity.^ From its inception, Bombay cinema embraced the centrality of music, dance, ritual, and festivals in Indian life, and encapsulated these moments through song and dance sequences. The contemporary popularity of song and dance sequences in Bollywood films (Bombay cinema was renamed Bollywood in the 1980s) is a continuation of this negotiation. In the contemporary context, however, new incarnations of song and dance sequences are no longer bound up with films; their byproducts, such as music videos and dance reality television, instead lead autonomous lives. The relationship between Bombay film dance or Bollywood dance and dance reality shows is a story of the long and complex history of screendance in India. Thus while dance television reality shows in India are conceptually borrowed from television reality shows in the West, they are deeply grounded in the visual and sensory culture of India and its all-pervasive media apparatus, Bombay/Bollywood films. In this essay, I am interested in investigating this indigenous logic of visual genre by placing the dance reality shows within the same “interocular field” as the song and dance sequences in Bombay/Bollywood films.^ I will argue that the song and dance sequences in Bombay films were forerunners of the music video industry as well as music and dance reality TV. This is true for both the west and the east (that is, Hollywood and Bollywood).
