Through the work of Rotarians and our partners, the WHO African region has been certified free of wild poliovirus. This means that no child in any of the region’s 47 countries will ever again have to suffer from the wild poliovirus. While we celebrate this great achievement, we look to the next goal: to eradicate the wild poliovirus in the two countries where the disease has never been stopped, Afghanistan and Pakistan. “To all of our Rotary members: Thank you for your continued support and dedication, which has made possible the certification of the WHO African region as free of the wild poliovirus. We know this hasn’t been easy, and there is still work to be done, but you have helped achieve something remarkable.” Holger Knaack Rotary International President Help us meet the next challenge by donating at endpolio.org/donate P_Wrapper_Front_Front_Inside_September 2020.indd 2 28-Aug-20 6:37:59 PM Inside 10 Reaching eggs to the nutritionally deficient Hari Kishan Valmiki of RC Secunderabad has been instrumental in distributing 500,000 eggs to needy children. 16 Sushil Gupta conferred Rotary Award of Honor 10 RI recognises PRID Sushil Gupta with its highest award for his long and successful service to Rotary. 18 When the mouse roared 1%(4ZMWJB8IJUMPDL UIFÜSTUXPNBOUPIFBE a Rotary club, goes down memory lane on women’s membership in Rotary. 28 Indian Rotarians travel to Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara Rotarians from Amritsar meet Pakistani Rotarians at the gurdwara in Lahore, Pakistan. 32 RC Nagpur Fort gives hope 16 18 to disabled children The club facilitates corrective surgery and rehabilitation of disabled children through its Project Saksham. 38 When an eye hospital rejuvenated a Rotary club An account of how the Hooghly Eye Hospital saved RC Hooghly from being de-chartered. 46 Rotary opens a 300-bed Covid care centre in Bengaluru RID 3190 has set up the Rotary Advika Nayonika Covid Care Centre at Peenya to 38 52 treat patients with mild Covid symptoms. 52 The empress of melodies Beginning this issue, we bring to you a series of articles on India’s greatest singers. The joy of Hamirkalyani Raagam It’s difficult to seek an apt adjective to describe the joy that Hamirkalyani brings. Smooth contours, silky glides, delicate yet intricate phrases characterise this raga. This raga is North Indian in origin; in Hindustani music, the raag Kedar (of the Kalyan thaat) is close to Hamirkalyani. While discussing Hamirkalyani, mention has to be made of the two madhyamas — the suddha and prati varieties — in the raga’s structure. The suddha madhyama is technically the bhashanga (foreign) note and is present in the avarohana. The prevalent order of swaras in this raga would be SPMPDNS / SNDPMmGPmRS, (M — prati madhyama; m —suddha madhyama). Rules cannot fetter the spirit and grammar cannot cripple the gait of this raga. When fine artistes cleverly weave the madhyamas in a phrase, the raga comes alive in all its glory. The exaggerated glides from the pancama to the sadja heighten its grandeur. Saranga would be considered an allied raga, and subtle differences in swara structure differentiate the two. I recall learning ‘Parimala Ranganatham’ in this raga from my guru. When I asked Sri Calcutta Krishnamurthy as to where Dikshitar had hidden the raga mudra in this song, he said it lies in the phrase ‘bhajehamveera nutham’. When I could not figure it out, he pointed out that Hamirkalyani used to be referred to as ‘Hamveeru’. Dikshitar has also composed ‘Purahara Nandana’ in this raga. Thyagaraja’s ‘Manamuleda’ is a masterpiece, while Subbaraya Sastri’s ‘Venkatasaila Vihara’ is soulful. The tiruppavai, ‘Thoomani Madathu’, merits mention, while Oothukadu’s ‘Nadamurali’ and Swati Tirunal’s ‘Gangeya Vasana’ are attractive pieces too.

  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.
