REPUBLIC OF CONGO: 19 August 2003 EBOLA EPIDEMIC Appeal No. 07/03; Launched on 25 February 2003 for 3 months for CHF 176,000 (USD 129,793 or EUR 120,206) to assist 50,000 beneficiaries. Budget was revised on 15 March 2003 to CHF 229,000 (USD 168,880 or EUR 156,420). For more information: www.ifrc.org Summary The department of Cuvette Ouest is situated in the northwest of the Republic of the Congo, approximately 900 km from the capital, Brazzaville. Two districts of this department (Kellé, Mbomo) were affected by the Ebola haemorrhagic fever epidemic since December 2002/January 2003. Among the 142 recorded cases, 128 died: 115 in Kellé and 13 in Mbomo. This represents a 90.14% mortality rate. Fourteen persons survived: ten in Kellé and four in Mbomo. The Minister for Health and Population of the Republic of the Congo officially declared the end of the epidemic on 5 June 2003. This epidemic had previously occurred in December 2001, lasted longer and resulted in a higher death toll. This latest epidemic reached Kellé district from two directions (Yembelengye and Mvoula), and spread to the two districts of Kellé and Mbomo. It reached a peak in its seventh week (10-15 February) with 27 cases recorded. -

A. Situation analysis Description of the disaster On 1st June 2020, the Ministry of Public Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared a new outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Equateur province, which shares a river border and significant trade and social links with the Republic of Congo (RoC). This marks the beginning of the DRC’s 11th outbreak. As of 24 June: • A total of 24 cases (21 confirmed and 3 probable), with 13 deaths (for a case fatality rate of 54,2%); • 11 health areas affected across 5 health zones; • 1,735 contacts of cases identified, of whom 93,6% have been contacted by health authorities within 24 hours; • 254 alerts of suspect EVD cases, 68,1% of which were investigated within the benchmark 24 hours; • 5,104 contacts, contacts of contacts and frontline workers vaccinated against EVD, following a ring vaccination strategy. -
