As a CAFF member festival, the SF Fringe is an open access event where our performing companies are chosen by lottery. This sometimes surprises people but it works, and a tremendous amount of new and relevant work comes out of the SF Fringe as well as many Bay Area pro- ducing groups who are cornerstones in the indie performing arts culture. We are also proud to say that we return 100% of the ticket price to the Fringe performing companies, which means that indie artists are able to earn money to continue to create their work. So please be sure to see as many shows as possible and help indie arts thrive and survive. Of course this would not be possible without the continued support of our dedicated volunteers, staff, funders, and audience. All Fringe Festivals are committed to a common philosophy that promotes accessible, inexpensive, and fun performing arts attendance. For the purposes of this study, qualitative research methods, supported by action research and combined with fieldwork and participant observations, will be used to investigate, describe, and document what Fringe Festivals are all about. This study produced a structural model that defines the steps necessary to achieve the goals inherent in a Fringe Festival, to motivate the individuals involved in the process, and suggests ways to sustain this motivation for continued goal achievement.

Since late May when I took my show, Denial Is A Wonderful Thing, on the road, I have been touring the CAFF Fringe circuit. So far I’ve been to the London, Ontario Fringe Festival, the PortFringe in Portland, Maine and as I write this letter I’m getting ready to head out to the two largest Fringe Festivals in North America: the Winnipeg Fringe and the Edmonton Fringe. 2019 marks the 25th Anniversary of CAFF (The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals) of which the SF Fringe is a proud member.
