INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS

The following people have recently registered as parishioners of the Cathedral:

Deanna Adamczuk Kristen Berczuk

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, February 10: St. Scholastica—Virgin Memorial St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict. She was born into a wealthy family in Italy in the year 480. As a young child, Scholastica consecrated herself to God. After her brother established his monastery in Monte Cassino, Scholastica settled a few miles away in Plombariola where she established her own monastery for nuns. Scholastica and Benedict visited each other once each year in a nearby farmhouse, as she was not permitted to enter his monastery. When Benedict was visiting and she was close to death, she asked him to stay another day. He refused to break his mo- nastic rule, so she asked for God’s intercession, and there was a thunderstorm which forced Benedict stay an extra day. A few days later, Scholastica passed away, and Benedict had a vision of her soul ascending into heaven. She was then buried in the tomb that had been prepared for her brother in his monastery. Monday, February 11: Our Lady of Lourdes Optional Memorial Our Lady first appeared to 14-year-old St. Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858 when she was collecting fire- wood with her sister and a friend. Bernadette saw a woman dressed in white, with a yellow rose on each of her feet, praying the rosary. Our Lady asked for a chapel to be built on the site of the apparition. She also asked Bernadette to pray for the conversion of sinners. During an apparition on February 25th, Our Lady told Bernadette to dig in the dirt and drink the water she would find. She found a stream, which to this day produces about 30,000 gallons of water each day and has resulted in numerous miracles. On March 25th, when asked to identify herself, Our Lady called herself the “Immaculate Conception.” Quote: “I do not promise to make you happy in this world, but in the other.”

Tuesday, February 12: St. Eulalia of Barcelona—Virgin and St. Eulalia was born in Barcelona, Spain in 290. Her early life was spent in prayer and devotion to God. During the Diocletian persecutions, when Eulalia was about 14 years old, a governor named Dacian arrived in Barce- lona and began to force the people into turning away from God toward pagan idols. Eulalia snuck out of her home and went to the city where the governor was residing, and publicly confronted him for his actions. The governor was at first amused, but seeing that she wouldn’t renounce Christ, he ordered that she be tortured and put to death. According to tradition, she was subjected to thirteen different tortures until ultimately being be- headed on February 12, 304. A dove was reportedly seen flying from her neck after she died.

Wednesday, February 13: St. Catherine de Ricci—Virgin and Mystic St. Catherine was born in Florence, Italy in 1522. When she was six years old, her father placed her under the care of the convent of Monticelli, where her aunt resided as a nun. Catherine later returned home, but she no longer had any interest in the secular world. When she turned 14 years old, she entered the Dominican convent at Prat in Tuscany. By the time she was 30 years old, she was named prioress of the community. During her time in the convent, Catherine became friends with three future popes, as well as St. Philip Neri, to whom she miraculously appeared and conversed. Beginning in February of 1542, Catherine began experiencing the “ecstasy of the Passion” every week for twelve years from Thursdays at noon until Fridays at 4 pm. She also carried the markings of the stigmata on her body.

Thursday, February 14: Ss. Cyril and Methodius—Bishop Optional Memorial Ss. Cyril (born Constantine) and Methodius were brothers who were born in Thessalonica to an im- portant military family. After working in government, Methodius retired from secular life and be- came a monk. Cyril studied philosophy and worked as a professor before ultimately becoming a monk himself. The brothers traveled to Moravia in 863 as missionaries. In addition to preaching the Gospel, they translated the Liturgy into the local Slavonic vernacular, as well as a prepared a trans- lation for most of the Bible. Following the death of Cyril, Methodius was made Bishop of Sirmium.

Friday, February 15: Ss. Faustinus and Jovita— Ss. Faustinus and Jovita were brothers born into a noble family in , Italy. Faustinus was a priest in the Diocese of Brescia, while Jovita was a deacon. When persecutions rose up in the region, and their bishop went into hiding, the two brothers courageously continued to proclaim the Gospel in public. A government leader named Julian had the brothers arrested and subjected them both to tor- tures. They were then ordered to be beheaded by the Emperor Hadrian in the year 120, who was visit- ing Brescia at the time. Saturday, February 16: St. Juliana of Nicomedia—Virgin and Martyr St. Juliana was born into a wealthy pagan family in Nicomedia, Turkey. Her father was an advisor to the emperor, and arranged for the marriage between Juliana and a senator named Elusius. Unknown to the father was the fact that Juliana had secretly converted to and had been baptized. When the time came for the marriage, Juliana refused to marry the pagan. Her father then beat her and turned her over to Elusius, who had been elevated to governor of Bithynia. Elusius sent Juliana to prison. While in prison, Juliana was tempted by the devil, who tried to trick her into sacrificing to pagan gods. She refused, and was eventually beheaded at the order of Elusius.
