Sunset for Suntour 13. Sunset for SunTour Frank J. Berto he Maeda Iron Works Company was founded by Shikanosuke Maeda in 1912 in TKawati-Nagano. Maeda made freewheels and sprockets for bicycles and agricultural machinery. Maeda was owned by the Maeda and Kawai families. A few months later, Maeda moved to Sakai. The original sprockets and freewheels were called 8.8.8. Introduction It was a good time to start a bicycle components busi Fig. 13.1. 1956 Sun Tour 8.8.8 Wide rear derailleur. ness. World War I ended bicycle imports into Japan. Sun Tour's first derailleur was copied from Simplex or Huret. Osaka was a center of Japan's small arms production. After World War I, many of the Japan's newly estab lished small arms factories started producing bicycles. Similar swords-to-plowshares transitions took place in Saint Etienne, France and Birmingham, England. In 1931, Mr. Taizo Kumagai married Shikano suke Maeda's daughter and changed his name to Taizo Maeda. During World War II, the Maeda Iron Works merged with eleven other small factories. The new company was called Toa Seiki Kosakusho. Taizo Maeda was elected President. The merged company was taken over by the Japan's military government in 1943 and became a subsidiary of the Kure Military Factory and produced ammunition. On July 10, 1945, a major B-29 raid on Osaka burned out the Maeda factory. The factory was re built after VJ Day and by 1946, 58 employees were producing freewheels at prewar volumes. Twenty-five year-old Junzo Kawai joined Maeda Iron works in l 1946. He moved ahead rapidly and became President j i:! , ;l when Taizo Maeda passed away in 1975. • ROAD TEST: the Rivendell Atlantis Unparalleled Beauty, and As Rugged and Versatile As It Gets
CYCLE SENSE ROAD TEST: The Rivendell Atlantis Unparalleled beauty, and as rugged and versatile as it gets. by John Schubert In the last few years, a selection of rugged-and-reliable touring bikes has graced these pages. Many more such bikes are available but not (yet) reviewed here. Usually, small nuances separate these bikes from one another. In the case of today’s bike, the Rivendell Atlantis, that’s true of the function part. The Atlantis is a tough-as-nails go-anywhere bike which, by dint of its ability to mount very wide tires, joins the few bikes at the top of the list in versatility and ruggedness. In personality, though, the Atlantis stands apart in a most delight- ful way. It combines sensible, rugged current-production components with a lugged steel frame far prettier than any other you’ll find at twice the price. Every functional nuance of the frame has been well thought out, and three of the frame’s tubes were custom designed for the Atlantis. The ornate lugwork is highlighted by contrast- color paint panels, and if you buy the complete bike from Rivendell, you’ll get the similarly dressy Nitto handlebars and lugged steel handlebar stem. Rivendell likes to send these bikes out with brown cloth handlebar tape, secured at the center of the handlebars with twine wrap and coated with shel- ULERY KREG BY ALL PLHOTOS lac. Born in San Francisco in 1955, Jacquie grew up in Rhode Island, Kansas, and finally Los Angeles, where she first developed her love of bicycles and her loathing of cars. Jacquie attended college at Middlebury in Vermont, and then moved to the Bay Area in the late 1970s, settling in San Francisco. She recounts her introduction to the Marin County cycling community on the occasion of the Appetite Seminar ride in in 1980, and reminisces about the many races she won over the years, as well as a few of her legendary provocations. She exposes the sexism and misogyny of bike culture, which prompted her to found the Women’s Mountain Bike & Tea Society (WOMBATS). Finally, Jacquie discusses her more than 35-year-long relationship with her husband Charlie Cunningham, and her care of him since a tragic accident left him with a life- changing brain injury. © All materials copyright Mill Valley Public Library.
