OverfishingPETER HOLMES, Star Contributor

ast week U.K. newspaper, The Guardian reported that there has been a catastrophic 74% decline in tuna and Lmackerel populations globally. The Guardian cites a Zoological Society of London study that says between 1970 and 2012 the tuna and mackerel populations fell 25% more than other oceanic species in the same period (which fell 49%). Overfishing is now rapidly becoming the biggest under- statement of the 21st century. With over half of the worlds population relying on food from the ocean it is a major issue with no clear path. Regulation would rely on complex international treaties that, even if signed, would be near impossible to enforce and largely ignored. Catching cattle rustlers is a cake walk compared to catch- ing illegal fishing, even when it is happening on an indus- trial scale. Mega-sized fishing ship like Factory Trawlers Super Seiners can bait thousands of hooks per hour or cast nets two kilometers in diameter many times a day. The fish simply don’t have a chance anymore. Regulating the size, scale and number of fishing ships could be a start, but again would require some international treaties because no country wants the smallest fishing fleet on the sea. And therein lies the biggest problem, with a com- mon resource like the ocean it is a race to the last fish. Eating Oceanwise or responsibly farmed fish is a start, but with so much investment in factory sized fishing equip- ment you can bet it will be put to use however they can for as long as they can.
