  • Researched by Elizabeth Kay and Liz Priestley
Researched by Elizabeth Kay and Liz Priestley Introduction In 2005-2006 members of the Village Improvement Committee, a sub-committee of Spondon Community Association transformed the disused cemetery in Chapel Street, Spondon into a sensory garden. The sensory garden was officially opened on Saturday 17th June 2006 by the Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor John Ahern. It won a Derby in Bloom award shortly after opening. The cemetery The burials in the cemetery are dated between c. 1840-1890. The need for a new burial space had arisen because the clergy, had over time, acquired some of St Werburgh’s Churchyard as part of the Vicarage walled garden. In 1839, after heated debates about this matter, the patron of the living, Rob Holden Esq, offered parishioners a piece of land (twice the amount), adjoining the new School Room, if they relinquished all claims to the Vicarage garden. St Werburgh’s old school, built in 1839, can be seen on the left-hand side of the cemetery. The cost of building the school was £700 and accommodated 220 pupils, who paid two pence a week to attend. It was enlarged in 1880 and could accommodate up to 550 children. In 1969 a new school was built just across the road. A notice in the Derby Mercury 31 May 1848… Thomas Dimock (deceased). For sale by auction two newly-erected dwelling houses with stables and out buildings situated at Stoney Cross by the side of the turnpike between Spondon and Borrowash. These properties were let to Mrs Land and William Locker.

ILon&on Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane. 1908. — PREFACE. As promised in the last volume of the Marriage Registers of Derbyshire, the marriage records of St. Alkmund's form the first instalment of the Registers of the County Town. The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I. • The Strutt Industrial Settlement in Belper
The Strutt industrial settlement in Belper Modern Belper represents at least four phases of development: the original medieval rural settlement of Beaurepaire that centres on the chapel of St John; the later growth lower down the hill which, by the middle years of the 18th century included a market place on a lower level than the present one; the industrial community established by Jedediah Strutt in the late 18th century on the northern edge of the existing settlement and around Belper Bridge Foot and up Belper Lane; and the 19th century expansion of the commercial centre along King Street and Bridge Street. The most prominent of the Strutt industrial housing stands on land to the south of the mill complex and to the east of the Derby-Matlock road. The land was acquired largely through numerous individual purchases, with its end use for workers’ housing clearly in mind. The houses were all of a high standard with gardens and, in certain areas, allotments for the residents. The housing, constructed from Derbyshire gritstone or locally made brick, and roofed with Staffordshire blue clay tiles or Welsh slate, was largely placed in an east-west alignment connected by narrow passages giving an almost grid-iron character to the layout. Construction of housing by the Strutt estate continued into the 20th century. The houses vary in form from row to row as the Strutts experimented with different designs. The result is a visually cohesive, attractive and unique mix of workers’ housing. As well as the land on the slopes to the east of the mills, the Strutts had also by the 1790s acquired land and property and started to build housing on the south facing slope to the north-west, adjoining their Bridge Hill estate.

Bolsover is on the A632 east of Chesterfield. There will be a ramble before the AGM, starting from the Assembly Rooms at 1030. It will return in time for people to eat sandwiches (bring your own) before the meeting starts. Most existing Area officers are willing to stand for re-election, but Lee Farmery, our Chair for the last three years, plans to step down, and we are still looking for someone to do the Footpaths Secretary role. Anyone who would like to propose someone for a post should contact our Secretary David Gadd (address on the back page) or speak to Lee Farmery on 07789 077575. We will also elect the Area’s delegates to the national General Council. This is an impor- tant part of how the Ramblers works as a democratic organisation. We will also have interesting speakers to help us catch up on local and national developments. Chair’s Report I would like to say a big thank you to all of our new and existing volunteers within the SYNED Area for their efforts over the past Page 2 Area News year, be it leading a walk, actively campaigning, keeping us in- formed of issues, promoting the Ramblers and much more. The work of our volunteers often appears to go unnoticed, but they are an essential part of how the Ramblers operate.

BOLSOVER NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE LEADER PROGRAMME EVALUATION FEBRUARY 2014 Foreword The past few years have not been easy for our local rural communities and businesses. Government cuts and the economic downturn have led to reduced services and difficulties in accessing much needed finance which has resulted in restricted growth for this area. The £2.4m which the Bolsover North East Derbyshire LEADER Programme has delivered since 2008 into the economies of both Council areas, has played a major part in supporting business, encouraging visitors and creating much needed new jobs. As Chair of the Local Action Group, I have seen projects develop from the first expression of interest through to the finished article, be that a new piece of equipment, a new business or even a new hotel. All of the LEADER funded projects, from the smallest to the biggest, have contributed to the enhancement of the area and to the growth of the local economy. This evaluation document explains what the BNED LEADER Programme has achieved and the rationale for doing what it has. I hope you find the document both informative and interesting. We are now looking forward to submitting a bid for more funding in the next Rural Development Programme which is due to start in 2015 and will run until 2020. By talking with and listening to local people and businesses, we hope to deliver as much, if not more in the next programme to improve our area and communities.
