    Points of Contact: Reading Clarice Lispector in Contemporary Italian Feminist Philosophy Mariana Nóbrega Fraga Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Mariana Nóbrega Fraga All rights reserved ABSTRACT: Points of Contact: Reading Clarice Lispector in Contemporary Italian Feminist Philosophy Mariana Nóbrega Fraga This project follows a thread of citations of the work of Brazilian author Clarice Lispector found in the philosophical feminist texts of four European thinkers: Hélène Cixous, Luisa Muraro, Adriana Cavarero, and Rosi Braidotti. I explore the intersection of material feminisms, Latin American decolonial feminism, and sexual difference theory differentially and multiply across contexts. I revisit histories of women and texts - French, Italian and Brazilian - that are multiply and differentially marginalized in the current Western feminist narrative framework - in order to create sources of alternative knowledge and create an opportunity for something new to emerge symbio-creatively from these points of contact. Chapter One covers the genesis of European feminist approaches to Lispector’s oeuvre in France, the impassioned reading by Hélène Cixous of Lispector’s work, and also provides vital counter-memory, decolonial feminist stories on Brazilian and Latin American feminisms which have been left out of the dominant Anglo-American/Western feminist historical narrative. Chapter Two will focus on the arrival in Italy of Lispector’s texts, Luisa Muraro and the Diotima women’s feminist philosophy group’s readings. Chapter Three then covers Adriana Cavarero, as well as her split from said Diotima group. Finally, Chapter Four brings us to Rosi Braidotti, from her early texts on Lispector to present theoretical horizons.

    Chapter 4: Time Matters: Faces, Externalised Knowledge and Transcendence BARBARA ADAM and SANDRA KEMP, Cardiff University, and Imperial College and Victoria and Albert Museum Abstract Prehistoric predecessors are known to us through their enduring creations. As externalised knowledge, their artefacts and art open for us windows on their relation to the time matters of impermanence, finitude and the realm beyond the lived present. Creating and re-presenting the impermanent world in solid form means the reality thus created appears as if it were immutable. As such it facilitates reflective knowledge and with it time-binding and time- distanciation practices that far exceed the capacity of spoken symbolic language. New modes of thought and expression are made possible through the visual. Importantly, it opens up the realm beyond the present and allows for free movement in time. This paper focuses on the human face as an exemplar of such externalised knowledge in relation to temporality and to notions of time and space as integral. Animated, the created face looks back at its maker. Endowed with life it becomes an interlocutor, another putative living entity through which reality can be probed and the temporal givens transcended. Through an investigation of the face in relation to these key temporal challenges the paper critically discusses existing approaches to time and history. Introduction [INSERT FIGURE 1 HERE] Some 400 carved stone spheres, measuring around seven centimeters in diameter, have been found in the Aberdeen area and the Orkney Islands of Scotland. They vary in intricacy, decorative detail and hardness of stone, with the largest number carved of granite, the most permanent and enduring material available at the time.

A sociedade, tal como a conhecemos não seria possível sem objetos, e é exatamente essa interação entre o homem e o mundo, material, composto de artefactos, que é aqui analisada. Para além do valor funcional, do uso que serve a sua existência, o objeto também serve outros propósitos, outras funções. Torna-se na memória, na representação de algo, de um momento, de uma época. Quando isso acontece, passa igualmente a contribuir para o pensamento. Neste trabalho será pois analisada essa relação a partir da Revolução Industrial, momento escolhido para representar o início de um pensamento de projeto em relação ao design. Serão igualmente localizados e definidos momentos paradigmáticos em que essa relação não só é clara, como representa ruturas significativas em relação a discursos anteriores. Por outro lado, este trabalho inicia-se geograficamente em Inglaterra por ser considerado o local e o início cronológico que interessa desenvolver no objeto de estudo, expandindo posteriormente aos Estados Unidos da América e subsequentemente pelo resto do mundo, desde aquele período até à atualidade.

Distinguished Rector, esteemed guests from the Golinelli Foundation, dear friends and colleagues, welcome. Your presence at this small but for us important scientific and cultural event is an honour both for us and for our small School of Design in this great University. As scholars of design, we want to focus attention on our work as educators and trainers because we are passionate about what we do and never complacent about how we do it. Here today we will attempt to investigate two phenomena: 1. How is design education changing? 2. How is education in general changing thanks to the contributions from the fields of design knowledge and the cultures of design? To address these questions we turned to those working in the field and asked them to identify the most interesting cases and from here we attempted to capture the instant and learn from the experience so as to improve our understanding of education: in universities and schools, in business and the community. The research model and method we have set up is small and there is room for improvement. The important thing is that we have confidence in it and that through its continual improvement it can grow to become a permanent monitoring centre. We have absolutely no intention of confusing it with a PRIZE or a RANKING or with a CELEBRATION of the best.

A History of Feminist Art History Remaking a Discipline and Its Institutions Victoria Horne PhD History of Art The University of Edinburgh 2014 THESIS ABSTRACT Recognising art’s crucial function for reproducing economic and sexual differences, feminist political interventions - alongside a range of ‘new’ critical perspectives including Marxism, psychoanalysis and poststructuralism - have wrought historic changes upon the production, circulation and consumption of art. This is widely acknowledged in art historical scholarship. However, understanding that ‘art history’ (as a historically conditioned discipline) is concurrently reproductive of these ideological and material inequalities, feminist scholars have significantly and continually sought to intervene at the point of production – the writing of art’s history – to expose its social role and remake the fundamental terms of the discipline. This is a truth less widely acknowledged or, at least, less well-understood within contemporary scholarship.
