The archive is organized in the same manner as the forums were: two main sections, and seven subsections. Each discussion topic is linked to a bookmark. The discussion topics are sorted from oldest to newest within each subsection. This is the opposite of how they were sorted in the original forums, but it was easier to build and maintain the archive in this way. Known problems: The polls in the “Software” subsection could not be archived. Many of the URL’s came through as blank lines. The forum software had a flaw: at the start of each discussion topic, it lists the topic name followed by “started by [name]” – but instead of using the name of the person who started the topic, it used the name of the last person to post to that topic. < TAG /> A Tabletop Games Framework EXAG Raluca D. Gaina, Martin Balla, Alexander Dockhorn, Raul Montoliu, Diego Perez-Liebana 2020 Hi there! I am Raluca Gaina, a PhD student from Queen Mary University of London. And this is TAG, an AI framework built around tabletop games. This is an ongoing project started during an internal game AI hack, which continues to be developed and attract contributions from many more researchers and students as I speak! 1 Presentation Mix & Match Visual materials • V1 – Edited programming video (see below) • V2 – Uncut programming video (see below) • V3 – PowerPoint slides: https://tinyurl.com/tag-exag-ppt • V5 – Transcript A1: https://tinyurl.com/tag-exag-tr1 • V6 – Transcript A2: https://tinyurl.com/tag-exag-tr2 Audio materials • A1 – Framework presentation (see below) • A2 – Programming (see below) Full videos available • EXAG 2020 presentation (A1 + V1): https://youtu.be/M81elk-NmKM • EXAG alternative presentation (A1 + V3): https://youtu.be/ST_2Q40pzjc • TAG introduction tutorial (A2 + V1): https://youtu.be/-U7SCGNOcsg • TAG full programming tutorial (V2): https://youtu.be/m7DAFdViywY I’ll talk a bit about this today, but first… given the virtual nature of the EXAG workshop this year, I’ve prepared several versions of visual and audio material to hopefully keep you all more entertained than just watching me read through some slides. One question raised during the review process was how easy it actually is to implement a game in the framework, so you are watching now the implementation of Dots and Boxes which took about 1 hour in real time, while listening to the framework presentation.

  • Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions
Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions Melissa J. Rogerson, Martin Gibbs, Wally Smith Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural User Interfaces The University of Melbourne Parkville, Vic, 3010 +61 3 8344 1394, +61 3 8344 1494 [email protected] , [email protected] , [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, we discuss the different ways in which modern European boardgames (“Eurogames”) are converted for digital play. We review digitised versions of three popular tabletop boardgames: Puerto Rico, Agricola and Ascension. Using these examples, we demonstrate the tension between the interaction metaphor of the original analogue medium and the metaphor of a digital game. We describe the importance of housekeeping chores to gameplay and position them as a form of articulation work, which is typically hidden by digital implementations. Further, we demonstrate the types of information that are created through digital play and discuss how this influences game play of both digital and physical boardgames. Keywords Board games, interaction metaphor, articulation, theorycrafting, informating INTRODUCTION Boardgames, traditionally played in their physical format using boards, cards, dice, playing tokens and the like, are increasingly being translated to digital form for devices such as smartphones, computers, videogame systems and tablets. To date, little attention has been paid to how and the degree to which this digitisation affects or transforms the experience of play. There is growing tension between the desire for digitised boardgames to be true to the interaction metaphor (Sharp et al. 2007, 58-63) of the original medium and the desire to extend the game to explore the potential of the digital medium.

  • GIB: Imperfect Information in a Computationally Challenging Game
Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research 14 (2001) 303–358 Submitted 10/00; published 6/01 GIB: Imperfect Information in a Computationally Challenging Game Matthew L. Ginsberg [email protected] CIRL 1269 University of Oregon Eugene, OR 97405 USA Abstract This paper investigates the problems arising in the construction of a program to play the game of contract bridge. These problems include both the difficulty of solving the game’s perfect information variant, and techniques needed to address the fact that bridge is not, in fact, a perfect information game. Gib, the program being described, involves five separate technical advances: partition search, the practical application of Monte Carlo techniques to realistic problems, a focus on achievable sets to solve problems inherent in the Monte Carlo approach, an extension of alpha-beta pruning from total orders to arbitrary distributive lattices, and the use of squeaky wheel optimization to find approximately optimal solutions to cardplay problems. Gib is currently believed to be of approximately expert caliber, and is currently the strongest computer bridge program in the world. 1. Introduction Of all the classic games of mental skill, only card games and Go have yet to see the ap- pearance of serious computer challengers. In Go, this appears to be because the game is fundamentally one of pattern recognition as opposed to search; the brute-force techniques that have been so successful in the development of chess-playing programs have failed al- most utterly to deal with Go’s huge branching factor. Indeed, the arguably strongest Go program in the world (Handtalk) was beaten by 1-dan Janice Kim (winner of the 1984 Fuji Women’s Championship) in the 1997 AAAI Hall of Champions after Kim had given the program a monumental 25 stone handicap.

TWIXT OCEAN AND PINES: THE SEASIDE RESORT AT VIRGINIA BEACH, 1880-1930 Jonathan Mark Souther Master of Arts University of Richmond, 1996 Robert C. Kenzer, Thesis Director This thesis descnbes the first fifty years of the creation of Virginia Beach as a seaside resort. It demonstrates the importance of railroads in promoting the resort and suggests that Virginia Beach followed a similar developmental pattern to that of other ocean resorts, particularly those ofthe famous New Jersey shore. Virginia Beach, plagued by infrastructure deficiencies and overshadowed by nearby Ocean View, did not stabilize until its promoters shifted their attention from wealthy northerners to Tidewater area residents. After experiencing difficulties exacerbated by the Panic of 1893, the burning of its premier hotel in 1907, and the hesitation bred by the Spanish American War and World War I, Virginia Beach enjoyed robust growth during the 1920s. While Virginia Beach is often perceived as a post- World War II community, this thesis argues that its prewar foundation was critical to its subsequent rise to become the largest city in Virginia.
