Table of Contents Solemn Vespers for the deceased 1 Vigil for the deceased 13 The Holy rosary 21 Biography 26 Solemn Vespers for the Deceased Processional Spes Christe (L.M. Duguet) O Christ, our Pardon and our Hope, Our Resurrection and our Life, All eyes and hearts to you must turn When saddened by approaching death.

You also bore its dreadful pangs, In suff’rings deeper far than ours, Into the Father’s loving hands With head bowed low Your spirit fled.

Good Shepherd, merciful and kind, Who knew our fragile, human state, You give us grace Your death to share, And in the Father’s love to die.

Since You once broke the gates of hell, And opened Heaven’s portal wide, Raise up our hope as now we mourn, As You will raise us after death.

May this our sister who now sleeps, In everlasting rest and peace, By Your sweet favor live to You, And sing Your praises ever more. Amen.

2 Introductory Verse V: God, come to my assistance.* R: O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen. .

Hymn Remember those, O Lord, Who in Your peace have died, Yet may not gain love’s high reward Till love is purified.

With you they faced death’s night Sealed with your vict’ry sign; Soon may the splendor of Your light On them forever shine!

Sweet is their pain, yet deep, Till perfect love is born; Their lone night-watch they gladly keep Before Your radiant morn.

Your love is their great joy, Your will their one desire; As finest gold without alloy, Refine them in love’s fire.

For them we humbly pray; Perfect them in Your love. O may we share eternal day With them in heaven above!

3 Ant. I:

Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the mountains:* from where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord* Who made heaven and earth.

May He never allow you to stumble!* Let Him sleep not, your guard. No, He sleeps not nor slumbers,* Israel’s guard.

The Lord is your guard and your shade;* at your right side He stands. By the day the sun shall not smite you* nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from evil,* He will guard your soul. The Lord will guard your going and coming* both now and forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

4 Ant. I (Repeated): The Lord will keep you from all evil,* He will guard your soul.

Ant. 2:

Psalm 130 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord,* Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive* to the voice of my pleading.

If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,* Lord who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness:* for this we revere you.

My soul is waiting for the Lord,* I count on His word. My soul is longing for the Lord* more than watchman for daybreak. Let the watchman count on daybreak* and Israel on the Lord.

5 Because with the Lord there is mercy* and fullness of redemption, Israel indeed He will redeem* from all its iniquity.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

Ant. 2 (Repeated): If You kept a record of our sins,* Lord, who could escape condemnation?

Ant. 3:

Philippians 2:6-11 Though He was in the form of God,† did not deem equality with God* something to be grasped at.

Rather, He emptied Himself,† And took the form of a slave,* being born in the likeness of men.

He was known to be of human estate,* And it was thus that He humbled Himself,

6 Obediently accepting even death,* death on a cross!

Because of this,* God highly exalted Him

and bestowed on Him the name* above every other name,

so that at Jesus’ name every knee must bend* in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth,

and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God the Father:* JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

Ant. 3 (Repeated): As the Father raises the dead and gives them life,* so the Son gives life to whom He wills.

Scripture Reading 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no man might boast before God. It is due to Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as, righteousness, sanctification and redemption, so that, as , Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.

Magnificat Luke 1: 46-55 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my savior

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His Name.

He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.

9 He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy,

The promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and His children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

10 Christ, Savior, destroy the reign of sin in our earthly bodies, so that just as through sin we deserved punishment – through You we may gain eternal life. R: Lord, You are our life and resurrection.

Christ, Redeemer, look on those who have no hope because they do not know You – may they receive faith in the resurrection and in the life of the world to come. R: Lord, You are our life and resurrection.

Celebrant: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Pause for silent prayer.

O God, glory of believers and life of the just, by the death and resurrection of your Son, we are redeemed: have mercy on your servant Mother Mary Angelica, and make her worthy to share the joys of paradise, for she believed in the resur- rection of the dead. Liturgy of the Word

First Reading 2 Corinthians 3:17-4:1, 5-6 A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians

We are being transformed from glory to glory.

The Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. All of us, gazing with unveiled faces on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into

15 the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit. Therefore, since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. For God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the Face of Jesus Christ.

V: Verbum Domini. R: Deo Gratias.

Gospel Luke 24:13-16, 28-35 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?

That very day, the first day of the week, two of the disciples of Jesus were going to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.

As they approached the village to which they were going, He gave the impression that He was going on farther. But they urged Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.

And it happened that, while He was with them at table, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other,

17 “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

V: Verbum Domini. R: Laus Tibi Christe.

Crucified Lord, forsaken in death, raised in glory: Lord, have mercy. R: Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, gentle Shepherd who bring rest to our souls, give peace to Mother Mary Angelica for ever: Lord, have mercy. R: Lord, have mercy.

18 Lord Jesus, you bless those who mourn and are in pain. Bless Mother Angelica’s communities, family and friends who gather around her today: Lord, have mercy. R: Lord, have mercy.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant: Brothers and sisters, our true home is heaven. Therefore let us pray to our heavenly Father as Jesus taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Celebrant: Lord Jesus, our Redeemer, you willingly gave yourself up to death, so that all might be saved and pass from death to life. We humbly ask you to comfort your servants in their grief and to receive Mother Mary Angelica into the arms of your mercy. You alone are the Holy One, you are mercy itself; by dying you unlocked the gates of life for those who believe in you. Forgive Mother Angelica her sins, and grant her a place of happiness, light, and peace in the kingdom of your glory for ever and ever. R: Amen.

V: May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. R: Amen.

Celebrant: May the peace of God, which is beyond all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. R: Amen.

Celebrant: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit. R: Amen.

20 The Holy Rosary The Glorious Mysteries

With Meditations by Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, P.C.P.A. from “My Life in the Rosary” mini-book The First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection of our Lord (To remember the joys to come and to persevere to the end) The joy of Your Resurrection fills my soul with exultation and the realization that my body, too, will rise some day. Like Your Five Wounds, my suffering will also shine for all to see. The Wisdom of the Father will be glorified forever as all men see how His plan and will in my life marked out the glory that would be mine for all eternity. All the trials, sufferings, heartaches, and disappointments will seem as nothing compared to the glory Your sufferings merited for me. They shall all seem like a dream, and the vision of Your Face will fill my soul with exquisite joy. . . . I will roam freely in the love of the Spirit forever and ever.

One decade recited V: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, R: and let perpetual light shine upon her. V: May she rest in peace. R: Amen. Ave, Ave (sung)

The Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension of our Lord (To rise above the things of this world) Dear Jesus, I find the day You ascended to the Father a sad day. It resembles my soul when, after experiencing Your Presence, it is plunged into a state of dryness. Like the Apostles I tend to stand still and look up in the hope that I will once again experience the joy of Your Presence. . . . This dryness of soul is something I must work with and not against. Help me to realize that when I feel Your Presence You are consoling me, but when I do not feel that Presence and I continue a life of love and virtue, I am consoling You. I want to rise above the demands of my emotions and have the courage to live in spirit and truth.

One decade recited V: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, R: and let perpetual light shine upon her. V: May she rest in peace. R: Amen. Ave, Ave (sung)

22 The Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit (To increase in Love and Divine Indwelling) Mary and the disciples were locked in the Upper Room praying in a spirit of expectation, and the Spirit of the Lord came in the form of fire over the heads of each one. At that moment, timid men became strong, fearful men became courageous, ignorant men became enlightened, and simple men became powerful. Men who lacked the courage to defend their Lord ran out into the streets and proclaimed His Name. . . . Holy Spirit, give me an increase of Your Gifts.

One decade recited V: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, R: and let perpetual light shine upon her. V: May she rest in peace. R: Amen. Ave, Ave (sung)

The Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of the Blessed Mary (To possess a deep awareness of the glory to come) Mary, my Queen and Mother, I rejoice that your pure body – the Ark of the Covenant before His Birth, and a Temple of the Lord at His Resurrection – rose from death in anticipation of the General Resurrection. It is a comfort to know that you are in Heaven as my Mother with all the love and concern your dignity demands. You know the dangers of this life, you know the temptations of the Enemy, you know the weaknesses of the flesh. Help me to withstand these dangers until Jesus calls me to Himself. . . . I want my love and zeal to endure any pain and make any sacrifice. . . . Let me rise above the things of this world so my thoughts may be with you in Heaven.

One decade recited V: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, R: and let perpetual light shine upon her. V: May she rest in peace. R: Amen. Ave, Ave (sung)

23 The Fifth Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (To one day be united to God in His Kingdom) On earth you were the unknown and unheralded Mother of Jesus. Your humility astonished the Angels and confused the proud demons. It is truly just that now your greatness be manifested to all God’s children. Your one desire is to lead us to Jesus, and your one prayer is for our salvation. I am grateful for your care and sorry for my negligence. Your Coronation gives me assurance that one day I too shall be crowned with glory. God will wipe away every tear from my eyes and bestow upon me the light of glory.

One decade recited V: Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, R: and let perpetual light shine upon her. V: May she rest in peace. R: Amen. Ave, Ave (sung)

25 Moer MarAngeica of the Annunciation, P. C. P. A.

Abbess Emerita, Our Lady of the Angels Monastery

Mother Mary Angelica (Rita Antoinette Rizzo) was born on April 20, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, the only daughter of John Rizzo and Mae Helen Gianfrancisco (Sr. Mary David). She attended school and worked in Canton until August 15, 1944, when she entered the of the Franciscan of the Most Blessed Sacrament at St. Paul’s Shrine in , Ohio. She received the holy habit and her new name in religion, Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation on November 8, 1945. In 1946, Sister Angelica was chosen to be part of the founding group of nuns of Sancta Clara Monastery in her hometown of Canton. On January 2, 1947, she professed her First Vows. She would make her Solemn Vows in this community six years later, and in 1955, after being elected to the advisory council, Sister Angelica became known as “Mother Angelica.” Following a back injury, Mother Angelica promised Jesus that if she could walk again, she would build Him a Monastery in the South. By 1962, the promise was fulfilled; Mother Angelica, walking with back and leg braces, became the Abbess and Foundress of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Irondale, Alabama. In 1970, Mother Angelica began writing books and speaking to inter-denominational groups at the Monastery. Six years later, Mother had written 50 mini-books and recorded over 150 audio-cassette teaching tapes and was a popular public speaker at events around

26 the country. She stepped into the television industry in 1978, recording 60 programs for the “Our Hermitage” program; shortly thereafter, Mother would found the first Roman satellite cable network. After purchasing some lights and cameras, and gathering together a small crew, the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) was launched live on August 15, 1981. Recognizing the need for priests and brothers to help serve the nuns and EWTN, she founded the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word (M.F.V.A.) in 1987. On December 28, 1992, WEWN, the Catholic Station was begun. EWTN has since expanded to cover the globe with a variety of programs available in many languages on Television, Radio, Shortwave and the Internet. While Mother was intimately involved in EWTN as the apostolate expanded, she continued as Abbess of her Monastery, living the communal life, taking her adoration hours, giving lessons to the nuns and overseeing their daily activities. In 1996, Mother Angelica began another great work in the Church with the building of the Temple of the Divine Child Jesus, (Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament) and a new Monastery. The of Perpetual Adoration officially relocated Our Lady of the Angels Monastery to Hanceville, Ala. in December, 1999. The same year, Mother Angelica founded the Knights of the Holy , a community of men to help serve the needs of the Shrine and the Monastery. In 2000, Mother resigned as CEO of EWTN. She continued to host her popular Live shows on EWTN until a debilitating stroke in 2001 limited her speaking ability. A few months after she celebrated 65 years in religious life, Pope Benedict XVI honored Mother Angelica with the esteemed “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” (For the Church and the Pope) award, the highest award given out by the Vatican, for her tremendous contributions to the Church and unfailing loyalty to the Holy Father. In October, 2009, the Holy Father also bestowed on her the title “Abbess Emerita” for life, to recognize her long and devoted guidance of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery. Throughout the years, Mother was the recipient of many Honorary Degrees, Doctorates and Awards of various types, including a Doctor of Communications from Quincy College and Doctor of Sacred Theology from the University of Steubenville. Mother Angelica was a woman of strong faith and courage whose life was consecrated to adoring Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. She loved God with a zeal that will have a lasting impact on Catholicism and the world. She has been a Mother to many, telling them how much they are loved by God and showing them the road to holiness. May our dear Lord now reward her abundantly and grant her eternal rest.
