PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION OF HISTORICAL EUROPEAN MARTIAL ARTS 22 and 23 June 2019, 19:00-21:00 At the Fan-Zone “Palace of Sports” SWORD & BUCKLER Aurélien Nouvion I approached HEMA in 2010 before starting my own group “Ex Machina” in Reims (France) in 2013. As long as I remember, I was always interested by History. Actually… I am a happy History and Geography teacher and a PhD student in medieval history. I had the great chance to discover HEMA through a gathering in 2010: at last, someone sets History in motion. This was enlightening: through the study of ancient manuscripts, translations, interpretation and training, I could feel History in movement. HEMA was like a bridge bringing together past and present. So, I indulged myself in every face of HEMA I could find: researches, translations, interpretations, training technics and competing that I first discovered in Swordfish 2014 where I coached a wrestling fighter. My main focuses are sword and shield systems: sword and medieval kite shield, I.33 and Bolognese fencing. In order to open up new horizons, I got in touch with English pugilism that I like to practice whenever I’ve got the opportunity. I train 7 hours a week. 4 hours are dedicated to technics, interpretations and mechanization. The remaining 3 hours to test these technics in a sparring situation. Translations and creation of according training exercises are of course done outside the gym! Like most HEMA enthusiasts, I travel whenever I can to test my interpretations with other fencers. I had the chance to teach in national and international events and gave some lectures about the oldest “Arte Dimicatoria” manuscript in France, Belgium and Netherlands. I also managed a project to recreate two “type XIV swords” using medieval historical crafting methods. The swords answer precise mechanical properties which were specified by studying a collection of historical swords. Moreover, I was very active in the development of the French HEMA Federation: I was a member of the Administration Board in 2015-2017 and the editor of the monthly federal newspaper for 3 years. Kyle Griswold (bio pending) LONGSWORD Martin Fabian Martin Fabian has been actively fencing since 2003. Starting in a stage combat/reenactment group, in 2006 he switched his interest solely to surviving original works dealing with historical European martial arts (HEMA). He is the author of multiple transcriptions, translations, articles and other notable works dealing with fencing and related matter. In 2018 he authored a book "Master's Lichtenauer's fencing", an anthology of a few medieval treatises in the tradition of Johannes Lichtenauer. Martin’s prime interest is longsword (mainly German tradition) and rapier (Fabris, Giganti), but he has also practiced other weapons - messer, sidesword, dagger, polearms, modern sabre, wrestling. Currently, he lives in Bratislava, Slovakia where he founded and leads Bratislavský šermiarsky spolok (Bratislava Fencing Society) with 60 active members. Long-term international instructor, active tournament participant Sergey Kultaev I started fencing at the school, “Riposte,” in 2003, after graduating from Saint-Petersburg State University. “Riposte” was the only place in Russia where students could study classical fencing (historical). I have been a fencing instructor since 2007. Longsword fencing is based on the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer. Renaissance Rapier is based on the Italian Masters of 16-17th centuries. Classical fencing is based on the late 19th- and earlier 20th-century foil, epee and sabre tradition. In 2013 I founded "Freifechtergilde SPb", these days it is one of the largest and strongest HEMA clubs in Saint-Petersburg and Russia. At the beginning of 2016, I was elected as a president of the National Federation of HEMA in Russia - NFHEMA. I was an invited instructor in Russia, the USA and Europe and led Longsword and Sabre workshops. I have a couple dozen medals from various competitions in Russia, Europe and America (BMT/Moscow, Challenge/Saint-Petersburg, IGX/Boston, Longpoint/Baltimore, Swordfish/Göteborg, HLO/Helsinki, AIMA ROMA/Rome, Tyrnhaw/Trnava, Test Match Minsk/Brescia). Position in the international HEMA rating for January 2019: N2 Longsword N3 Single Rapier N7 Rapier & Dagger My students also won several medals in longsword and other tournaments in different HEMA competitions in Russia and Europe. My favorite saying is, “Got hit? It means you were wrong!”. I teach only the techniques that I have interpreted, tested, and mastered myself in sparring and competitions. Studying is an infinite process. My feeling is that this art is like a puzzle and we're discovering parts of it from multiple sources from different ages."
