I’m thrilled to have been invited to Chicago. I am attaching chapters 5 and 8 from my book-in-progress, tentatively titled Garland’s Million: The Radical Experiment to Save American Democracy. The book is the story of an organization known informally as the Garland Fund or formally as the American Fund for Public Service: a philanthropic foundation established in 1922 to give money to liberal and left causes. The Fund figures prominently in the history of civil rights lawyering because of its role setting in motion the early stages of the NAACP’s litigation campaign that led a quarter-century later to Brown v. Board of Education. I hope you will be able to get some sense of the project from the crucial chapters I’ve attached here. These chapters come from Part 2 of the book. Part 1 focuses on Roger Baldwin, the founder of the ACLU and the principal energy behind the Fund. Part 2 (including the chapters here) focuses on James Weldon Johnson, who ran the NAACP during the 1920s and was a board member of the Fund. Parts 3 and 4 turn respectively to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (a labor radical on the board) and Felix Frankfurter, who in the 1920s served as a key outside consultant and counsel to the Fund. To set the stage, readers have learned in Part 1 about Baldwin as a disillusioned reformer, who advocated progressive programs like the initiative and referendum only to see direct democracy produce a wave of white supremacist initiatives. -

® 2019-2020 Season Overview JULY 2020 Report Summary The following is a report on the gender distribution of choreographers whose works were presented in the 2019-2020 seasons of the fifty largest ballet companies in the United States. Dance Data Project® separates metrics into subsections based on program, length of works (full-length, mixed bill), stage (main stage, non-main stage), company type (main company, second company), and premiere (non-premiere, world premiere). The final section of the report compares gender distributions from the 2018- 2019 Season Overview to the present findings. Sources, limitations, and company are detailed at the end of the report. Introduction The report contains three sections. Section I details the total distribution of male and female choreographic works for the 2019-2020 (or equivalent) season. It also discusses gender distribution within programs, defined as productions made up of full-length or mixed bill works, and within stage and company types. Section II examines the distribution of male and female-choreographed world premieres for the 2019-2020 season, as well as main stage and non-main stage world premieres. PRESIDENTIAL HANDWRITING FILE: PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS: 1981-1989 – REAGAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS This collection is available in whole for research use. Some folders may still have withdrawn material due to Freedom of Information Act restrictions. Most frequent withdrawn material is national security classified material, personal privacy, protection of the President, etc. PRESIDENTIAL HANDWRITING FILE: PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS: 1981-1989 The Presidential Handwriting File is an artificial collection created by the White House Office of Records Management (WHORM). The Presidential Handwriting File consists of a variety of documents that Ronald Reagan either annotated, edited, or wrote in his own hand. When documents containing the president's handwriting were received at WHORM for filing, the original was placed in the Presidential Handwriting File and arranged by the order received. A photocopy of the document was placed in the appropriate category of the WHORM: Subject File. The first page of the casefile was stamped Handwriting File, indicating the location of the original documents. However, WHORM often failed to indicate on the original documents the original location (i.e. the six digit tracking number, Subject Category Code). The Presidential Handwriting File, as created by the White House, did not contain handwriting found in staff and office files. The Library will be creating a further series of handwriting material from staff and office files. In order to provide better access to the Presidential Handwriting File, the collection has been arranged into six series. Each series is arranged chronologically by the date of the document. Each document has been marked with the appropriate WHORM: Subject File category and a six digit tracking number. -
