Celia Fushille Artistic Director FOUNDER MICHAEL SMUIN - An American master, Michael began his career as a dancer performing with , , and on Broadway. A Tony and Emmy Award-winning choreographer, Michael brought a signature style to his work on stage, in film, and on television. A maverick, he fearlessly blended the theatrical with the classical and popular and combined elements drawn from his vast stage experience. Michael’s works continue to dazzle and entertain contemporary audiences. His company, Smuin Ballet, was founded in 1994 as a vehicle to showcase his creative versatility. Smuin Ballet maintains Michael’s legacy today. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CELIA FUSHILLE - As a founding member of Smuin Ballet and its principal dancer for over 12 years, Celia worked closely with founder Michael Smuin. In a career spanning 25 years, Celia performed on stages in the US and internationally, and appeared on television and in film. Celia’s exuberant style embraces and personifies Smuin Ballet, a dance company whose works remain accessible to the public by marrying the grace and traditions of ballet with the multi-dimensional elements of contemporary music and dance. Today, Celia oversees the artistic direction of the Company, assuring that the inspiration that began over two decades ago lives on with each vibrant season of Smuin Ballet. MANAGING DIRECTOR RHONDA GROSSMAN - As Smuin Ballet’s Managing Director, Rhonda oversees the business operations of the Company. With over 20 years of experience guiding creative organizations towards successful outcomes, Ms. Grossman focuses on a pragmatic approach to improving the company’s financial and strategic position. Her past experience includes a senior position at The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life (Formerly The Judah L. Magnes Museum). She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of San Francisco’s School of Management and an MBA in Sustainable Management from the Presidio Graduate School of San Francisco. COMPANY MANAGER JO ELLEN ARNTZ - Jo Ellen Arntz moved to San Francisco after receiving her BFA in dance from Creighton University. A member of San Francisco Ballet from 1981-1991, she’s been on faculty at Marin Ballet, Miss Tilly’s and Ballet Califia, adding wardrobe and stage management to her skill set. She began at Smuin Ballet as Wardrobe Supervisor in 1996 and became Company Manager shortly thereafter. Working with Michael Smuin at San Francisco Ballet and later his own company prepared her for the multiple hats she wears in the organization today. This summer she celebrated her 18th year on Marin Dance Theatre’s faculty. PRODUCTION DIRECTOR & STAGE MANAGER KATHRYN T. GRAHAM - K.T. joined Smuin Ballet in 1997 after working as Production Stage Manager and Lighting Designer for Lewitzky Dance Company in Los Angeles, and Technical & Lighting Director for Washington Ballet in Washington D.C. with which she toured extensively both nationally and internationally. K.T. also engages in freelance projects and has particularly enjoyed serving as Production Stage Manager for Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, Dances from the Heart benefits for The Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation, and the National Dance USA showcase in 2012. BALLET MASTER AMY - Amy London received her training in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico from Karen Alwin and Shauna Bereska. She danced with Hartford Ballet, Diablo Ballet and Smuin Ballet. Favorite Smuin Ballet roles included: Eternal Idol, Q.a.V. and Hearts Suite. She has served on faculty for schools throughout the Bay Area and as Artistic Coordinator at Marin Ballet where she choreographed more than twenty works. As Smuin’s Ballet Master, she has enjoyed continuing Michael’s legacy as well as working with and being the caretaker of the works of , Trey McIntyre, Amy Seiwert, Ma Cong, Helen Pickett, Adam Hougland, Choo-San Goh and Jirˇí Kylián. AMY SEIWERT - Choreographer in Residence As a former dancer with Smuin Ballet for nine years, Ms. Seiwert had the honor of working with her mentor Michael Smuin for 8 of those. Honors include “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine, “Hot 20 under 40” by 7x7, and a GOLDIE from the Bay Guardian. Twice she has been invited to participate in the NY Choreography Institute at the invitation of Peter Martins creating on dancers from The New York City Ballet. Her work is in the repertory of Atlanta, Colorado, Washington, Oakland, Louisville, American Repertory, and Carolina , as well as AXIS Dance, Robert Moses KIN, and Ballet Austin.
