The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops. -

1 4 Podlachia in north-east Poland has a considerable number of small towns, which had a great importance in the past, but with the passage of time, their role decreased due to political and economic changes. Until the Second World War, they had cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, with residents of Polish, Russian, Belarussian, German, Jewish and Tatar origin. After the war, some of them were gone, but their heritage was preserved. One of them is Supraśl, a small town near Białystok, capitol of the Podlachia region, north-eastern Poland. The best known monument of the town is the Suprasl Lavra (The Monastery 5 of the Annunciation), one of six Eastern Orthodox monasteries for men in Poland. Since September 2007 it is on Unesco’s Memory of the World list. It was founded in the 16th century by Aleksander Chodkiewicz, Marshall of the Great Duchy of Lithuania. In 1516, the Church of the Annunciation was consecrated. Some years later the monastery was expanded with the addition of the second church dedicated to the 2 Resurrection of Our Lord, which housed the monastery catacombs. Over time, the Supraśl Lavra became an important site of Orthodox culture. In 1609, the Monastery accepted the Union of Brest in the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Basilian Order (Unitas) took over its administration. In 1796, Prussian authorities confiscated the holdings of the monastery after the third Partition of Poland. 6 7 Nevertheless, it continued to play an important role in the religious life of the region as the seat of a newly created eparchy for those devout Ruthenians under Prussian rule, starting in 1797 and lasting until it fell under Russian rule after the Treaties of Tilsit in 1807. -

A CONTROVERSIAL PATH TO THE CREATION OF THE AUTOCEPHALOUS ORTHODOX CHURCH IN UKRAINE Sergei A. Mudrov Polotsk State University, Department of Social Communications, Belarus. Email: [email protected] Abstract: This article analyses the establishment of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine. It explains the main steps that were taken in Ukraine towards obtaining auto- cephaly for the Orthodox Church, namely for two non-canonical groups — ‘Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church’ and ‘Ukrainian Orthodox Church -- Kiev Patriarchate’, which formally merged in December 2018. A special attention is devoted to the analysis of the events in 2018, starting from the April 2018 request of the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, addressed to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos. I argue that the move towards autocephaly was dictated primarily by politico-ideological reasons and was accom- panied by the rise of confrontation and a lack of cooperation. The majority of Orthodox, belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), opposed this process, which made them the subject of intimidation campaigns. It appears that in Ukraine there is an ongoing process of constructing a “radical other”, and much effort is being devoted to making the Ukrainian Orthodox Church this “radical other”, since the actions of this Church have been often interpreted in the most negative ways. Overall, the move towards autocephaly, instead of uniting Ukrainians, has brought about new dividing lines in Ukraine and has contributed to the split in global Orthodoxy. Alexander Baran THE KIEVAN MOHYLA-MAZEPA ACADEMY AND THE ZAPOROZHIAN COSSACKS It would be difficult to think of two, more contradictorY concepts — Cossacks and an Academy. As soldiers, brigands and vagabonds the Cossacks could scarcely be imagined to have anY relationship to higher education. And, indeed, they didn’t — everywhere, that is, except in Ukraine. The strange fact is that in 17th and 18th centurY Ukraine die Zaporozhian Cossacks were among the foremost patrons and defenders of the greatest institution of higher learning in Eastern Europe at the time — the Kievan Mohyla College, later the Kievan Mohyla-Mazepa Academy. This remarkable phenomenon surelY deserves some examination. The rebirth of Kiev as a cultural and educational center dates back to the foundation of the local “brotherhood” (bratstvo) in 1615 at the EpiphanY Church. In addition to the clergY, enrolled in the brotherhood were Ukrainian burghers and the majoritY of the Ukrainian nobility. But, most significantly for us, the Kiev brotherhood was soon joined by the Cossack hetman, Petro Kona- shevYch SahaidachnYi with the entire Zaporozhian Army.1 He thus became its first Cossack patron, beginning the tradition of Cossack support for the revival of culture and education in 17th century Ukraine. The main task of the “bratstvo” was the defense of the Orthodox faith against Catholic encroachment, and cultural-educational v/ork in the Ukrainian community of Kiev. With this aim the Brotherhood established a school at the Epiphany monasterY under the rectorship of Iov BoretskYi, later Metropolitan of the renewed Orthodox hierarchY. Under his direction the school assumed a Slavonic-Greek character, continuing the tradition of other Brotherhood schools in Ukraine and Belorussia at that time.2 In 1627, the Kievan Pechersk MonasterY received a new archimandrite — Petro MohYla. -

What seems novel after Thanksgiving, and even in the first week of December, can become monotonous with the over-indulging the sweets and smells and shopping. It’s so bad, that by the time we get to Christmas, many of us can be totally done and burnt out, and our culture agrees. The radio stations turn off the holiday music, the gift-return parade Sunday School Christmas Pageant begins, and the joy that is so fresh right now seems gone. & Breakfast with St Nick …….. p. 8 The Church doesn’t get this way with the Nativity. It has an immunity to this loss because of the balance that it delivers for our JOY Gingerbread Houses ……...p. 8 life, not just at the holiday season, but always. The Church’s balance can be seen outwardly in the Church’s diet during this season, as we have a history of fasting in preparation for its biggest GOYA caroling ……………………p.8 feasts, including the Nativity. According to the calendar, the fast began on November 15 th and then it gets stricter after the 12 th of Greek School Christmas Program …..p. 9 December, going all the way through December 24 th . -

SYSYN In 1977 Father Vasyl' Romanyuk, a prisoner in the Soviet Gulag because of his struggle for religious and national rights, addressed a letter to Metropolitan Mstyslav, leader of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in the West:. Your Grace! First of all, I assure you of my devotion and humility. I declare that I consider and have always considered myself a member of the U[krainian] A[utocephalous] O[rthodox] C[hurch] in spite of the fact that I formally belonged to a different hierarchy, for it is well known that the Ukrainian Church, Orthodox as well as Catholic, is outlawed in Ukraine. Such are the barbaric ethics of the Bolsheviks. 1 The appeal was a remarkable testimony that almost fifty years after the destruction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Autocephalous Church formed in the 1920s and over thirty years after the eradication of the Church restored during the Second World War, loyalty to Ukrainian Orthodoxy still remains alive among Ukraine's believers. It also demonstrates how shared persecution has brought new ecumenical understanding between U,laainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholics. 'To discuss the position of Ukrainian Orthodoxy in the Soviet Union is a difficult task, for since the destruction of tens of its bishops, thousands of its priests, and tens of thousands of its lay activists in the early 1930s (and once again after the Second World War), and its forcible incorporation into the Russian Orthodox Church, it exists more as a loyalty and an Ull realised dream than as an active movement. -

Timofeeva5 Abstract The article considers various aspects of legal system interaction and mutual influence in the states of Central and Eastern Europe during their historical and cultural development. The thing is, in particular, about unified historical (Slavic) roots of these states, common sources of law, the elements of legal culture, etc. The socialist statehood, in which they existed for about half a century, also exerted a definite influence on the development of the legal systems in these countries. The conclusions are drawn that the majority of the states of Central and Eastern Europe, having passed the so-called post-Soviet (post-socialist) stage of their development, joined the continental legal family, confirming the German theory of the temporary anomaly of socialist law. As for the Russian legal system, despite the fact that it is very close to the family of continental law by a number of criteria, it still exists apart from it (in particular, due to the specific nature of legal ideology and legal culture). -

The international community was taken by surprise, and its reactions to the Russian aggression were often confused and inadequate. Even more confused and inadequate were the responses from global Christianity. Russian propaganda often renders the aggression against Ukraine as a quasi- religious conflict: a “holy war” against the “godless” or “heterodox” West. It would be natural, therefore, for the Christian churches worldwide to loudly condemn both propaganda and aggression. However, in most cases, their response was silence. Such reactions came from most local Orthodox churches, the Roman Catholic church, and international ecumenical organizations such as the World Council of Churches. -
