After a few years of nomadic exis- tence, the family settled in Mjölby, where Axel went to school. His father was an inventor by nature and his creativity was inherited by his son. From his early boyhood, he was able to play several instruments by ear: mouth organ, small accordion, mandoline and piano. In junior school he played together with a couple of class-mates, and they often performed at class parties. As a schoolboy, Axel developed into an impressive drawer, he was interested in astronomy and dreamt of becoming an engineer or an architect. The shift towards classical music came in 1942, when the boy’s piano teacher – after having tried in vain to arouse his interest in operetta and popular music – presented him with the slow movement from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. -
Concerto Copenhagen
CONCERTO COPENHAGEN Concerto Copenhagen gave its first performances in 1991 and was soon to become Scandinavia’s leading period instrument orchestra. Today it is known internationally as one of the most interesting and innovative baroque orchestras. Its trademark is vitality, style and a marked talent for communicating with the audience. In 1999 Lars Ulrik Mortensen was appointed Artistic Director. As recognition of his stature as one of the world’s leading harpsichord players and musical directors he was awarded the coveted Léonie Sonning Prize in 2007. The partnership between Concerto Copenhagen and Mortensen has resulted in an exciting musical journey, appreciated and praised by audiences and critics worldwide. Throughout the years Concerto Copenhagen has collaborated with internationally celebrated artists such as: Emma Kirkby, Andreas Scholl, Anne Sofie von Otter, Andrew Manze, Reinhard Goebel, Alfredo Bernardini and Andrew Lawrence-King who is the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor. Concerto Copenhagen’s CD recordings for the German label cpo, Deutsche Grammophone and BIS, as well as DVD productions for Harmonia Mundi and Decca, have attracted world wide attention and won several prestigious prizes. This has led to invitations from many of Europe’s leading concert venues and festivals as well as extensive tours to USA, Japan and Australia. Everywhere critics have placed Concerto Copenhagen in the first rank of international baroque orchestras. In Denmark their main partner is the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen where Concerto Copenhagen performs on an annual basis. Recent productions Nordic Artists Management / Denmark VAT number: DK29514143 http://nordicartistsmanagement.com have included works by Monteverdi and Mozart, as well as Händel’s XERXES, GIULIO CESARE, PARTENOPE and JEPHTA. -
NORTHERN STARS MUSIC from the NORDIC and BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars
NORTHERN STARS MUSIC FROM THE NORDIC AND BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars Often inspired by folk tradition, nature, landscape and a potent spirit of independence, the music of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic states is distinctive and varied, with each country’s music influenced by its neighbours, yet shaped and coloured by its individual heritage. Traveling composers such as Sweden’s Joseph Kraus introduced 18th and early 19th century classical trends from Germany and Italy, but with national identity gaining increasing importance as Romantic ideals took hold, influential and distinctive creative lines were soon established. The muscular strength of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies grew out of the Danish nationalist vigor shown by Friedrich Kuhlau and Niels Gade, extending to names such as Per Nørgård today. Gade was a teacher of Edvard Grieg, who owes his position as Norway’s leading composer, at least in part, to the country’s traditional folk music and the poignant lyricism of the Hardanger fiddle. The music of Finland is dominated by the rugged symphonies of Jean Sibelius, and his Finlandia ensured his status as an enduring national symbol. Sibelius successfully combined the lessons of Viennese romanticism with a strong Nordic character, and this pragmatic approach has generated numerous contemporary giants such as Aus Sallinen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho. Turbulent history in the Baltic States partially explains a conspicuous individualism amongst the region’s composers, few more so than with Arvo Pärt, whose work distils the strong Estonian vocal tradition into music of striking intensity and crystalline beauty. -
Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father. -
