Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in his address said the launch of the project along with Asif Ali Zardari, had sent a message across that the political leadership should be united when it comes to the development of the country. He said this political trend must be set in Pakistan now and the leaders need to think about the country first regardless of their differences. He thanked former President Asif Zardari for inviting him to the ground-breaking of the Thar Coal project and said it was a matter of satisfaction that “we all are together and have the same priorities. Anyone who believes in the development of Pakistan, would be pleased that the country’s political leadership is together on this national event.” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif termed the Thar Coal project a big national development project and suggested that the coal for all projects in Gaddani should be supplied from Thar. -

People’s Republic of China (PRC) officials, military officers, and civilian analysts use the strategic strongpoint concept to describe certain strategically valuable foreign ports with terminals and commercial zones owned and operated by Chinese firms.1 Each case study analyzes a different port on the Indian Ocean, selected to capture geographic, commercial, and strategic variation.2 Each employs the same analytic method, drawing on Chinese official sources, scholarship, and industry reporting to present a descriptive account of the port, its transport infrastructure, the markets and resources it accesses, and its naval and military utility. -

There are different names under consideration for the slot of chairman FBR including Tariq Pasha, Mujtaba Memon, Jehanzeb Khan, Nausheen Javed and Javed Ghani. With the latest development, Tariq Pasha is considered among the top contenders of this top position within the ranks of FBR. Pasha is going to reach the age of superannuation very soon, so if the government decides his name, he might be given a contract for three years period. Jehanzeb Khan, who is currently serving as Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, is in the race and he will also be retiring in coming August 2020. It is also a fact that Adviser to PM on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh wants to see Mujtaba Memon as the new chairman FBR but with the possibility of induction of new adviser to PM on revenue, his powers on the revenue front will be taken away from him. -

ISSN: 2186-8492, ISSN: 2186-8484 Print ASIAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES & HUMANITIES Vol. 2 No. 4 November 2013 POLITICAL PARTIES: A FACTOR OF STABILITY IN PAKISTAN 1999-2008 Muhammad Nawaz Shahzad 1, Rizwan Ullah Kokab 2 Department of History & Pakistan Studies, GCU, Faisalabad, PAKISTAN. 1 [email protected] , 2 [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper studies the Pakistan’s political stability in the context of the role of the political parties from 1999 to 2008. It also highlights that the culture of political parties went through a profound change during the Musharraf era in the result of the reforms introduced by the military regime. The questions how the political parties strengthened themselves in response to and due to the challenges posed by the army rule and how parties performed for the development of the stability in the country have been dealt. The role of ruling parties – Pakistan Muslim League (PML(Q)), Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) – as well as the opposition parties – Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League (PML(N)), and Mutahida Majlis-i- Aml (MMA)’s religious parties – as the safeguard to the instability has been defined through a qualitative research. It was assessed that the political parties matured themselves and did not sacrifice the stability of the country for their political gains . Keywords: Stability, party politics, influence, challenges, response INTRODUCTION In 12 th October 1999 Musharraf took over the government and arrested Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
