LISA FISCHER BIO Lisa Fischer Is a Singer Who Really Gets Around. Her Life
LISA FISCHER BIO Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automoBiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not Be on the marquee, But she doesn't care. She's Busy loving every minute of it. It's easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won't let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it's the sweetness of her smile, her visiBle pleasure in watching her Bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous- girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she's their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on 'Gimme Shelter' has millions of hits). The rest of her resume is pretty impressive too: touring, recording, and music making with Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keyes, Lou Reed, Louie Vega, Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, George Benson, Laurie Anderson, Lee Ritenour, Jackie Evancho (and many others). Along with many other top session and backup singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Patti Austin, and Judith Hill, "the greatest artists you've never heard of" (but whose voices are instantly recognizable), she's featured in Morgan Neville's acclaimed documentary film Twenty Feet from Stardom, distributed By Miramax in the US and scheduled for European premieres throughout 2013-2014 season. -

When Strawberry Studios closed down the staff were busy clearing out the building. There were at least 20,000 copy masters from various bands and the artistes or their agents. They were contacted as to whether they wished to buy the tapes from the Strawberry library because they were clearing out. Mostly the artistes already had their own copies and said Strawberry should dispose of them. Some asked for the copy masters and these were handed over. The remaining copy masters were consigned to the skips. A colleague David Drennan was assigned the task of contacting as many of the clients as possible about their tapes. In the case of Factory Records, David Drennan remembers that they only asked for The Happy Mondays tapes and did not want any others. (see copy email ‘Dave Drennan’) Later I discovered that Factory Records had parted company with Joy Division/New Order. I felt that the tapes of Martin Hannett's work i.e. the ones he produced should not be destroyed. That is why I removed them from the skip and rescued them from landfill. When Warners were threatening court action I contacted Nick Turnbull (see copy email ‘Nick Turnbull’) who had been the owner of Strawberry Studios and who closed it down. -
Technofeminism
- TechnoFeminism JUDY WAJCMAN polity 2 Technoscience Reconfigured Men and things exchange properties and replace one another; this is what gives technological projects their full savour. Bruno Latour, Aramis Feminist approaches of the 1990s and today adopt an opti mistic perspective on the nature of digital technologies and their implications for women. In doing so, they present an image of new technology as radically distinct from older technologies and, as such, positive for women. In looking forward to what these new technologies may make possi ble, they elaborate a new feminist 'imaginary' different from the 'material reality' of the existing technological order. In this way, in common with other proponents of the impact of information and biotechnologies, they dis tinguish new technologies from more established ones, and downplay any continuities between them. While attributing a technological determinism to the past, paradoxically such approaches infer a new form of technological determinism, albeit one that predicts a future that advantages women over men. The consequences of this are explored in subsequent chapters. We shall see that Technoscience Reconfigured 33 if the social relations of older technologies are presented in too rigid a form, then the new technologies come to be seen as too open and malleable. If the former give rise to an immobilizing pessimism, the latter obviate the need for feminist technopolitics. Recent studies of science and tech nology have transformed our understanding of the social relations of technologies, both old and new. What I suggest in this chapter is that the social shaping, or constructivist, perspective offers the possibility of a fruitful interchange with feminism that can overcome the unsatisfactory dualisms with which much feminist analysis has been plagued. -
THE SHARED INFLUENCES and CHARACTERISTICS of JAZZ FUSION and PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014
COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Though many examples of crossing over are identified, the examples used do not necessitate the creation of a new genre label, nor do they demonstrate the need for both genres to be combined into one. iii Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Part One: The Emergence of Jazz………………………………………………………….. 3 Part Two: The Emergence of Progressive………………………………………………….. 10 Part Three: Musical Crossings Between Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock…………….... 16 Part Four: Conclusion, Genre Boundaries and Commonalities……………………………. 40 Bibliography………………………………………………………………………………. -

Press 1 April 2021 the Famous Artists Behind History's Greatest Album
CNN Style The famous artists behind history's greatest album covers Leah Dolan 1 April 2021 The famous artists behind history's greatest album covers Throughout the 20th-century record sleeves regularly served as canvases for some of the world's most famous artists. From Andy Warhol's electric yellow banana on the cover of The Velvet Underground & Nico's 1967's debut album, to the custom-sprayed Banksy street art that fronted Blur's 2003 "Think Tank," art has long been used to round out the listening experience. A new book, "Art Sleeves," explores some of the most influential, groundbreaking and controversial covers from the past forty years. "This is not a 'history of album art' type book," said the book's author, DJ and arts writer DB Burkeman over email. Instead, he says the book is a "love letter" to visual art and music culture. For the 45th anniversary of "The Velvet Underground & Nico" in 2012, British artist David Shrigley illustrated a special edition reissue cover for Castle Face Records. Image: David Shrigley/Rizzoli Featured records span genres and decades. Among them are Warhol's cover for The Rolling Stones' 1971 album "Sticky Fingers," featuring the now-famous close-up of a man's crotch (often assumed, incorrectly, to be frontman Mick Jagger in tight jeans) as well as an array of seminal covers designed by graphic designer Peter Saville, co-founder of influential Manchester-based indie label Factory Records. Despite having relatively little art direction experience under his belt, Saville was behind iconic covers such as Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" (1979), depicting the radio waves emitted by a rotating star, and the brimming basket of wilting roses -- a muted reproduction of a 1890 painting by French artist Henri Fantin-Latour -- that fronted New Order's "Power, Corruption & Lies" (1983). -
