JEHOVAH's WITNESSES History the Adventist Movement Emerged in The
JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES History The Adventist movement emerged in the 1830s around the predictions of William Miller, who proclaimed that Jesus Christ would return in 1843 or 1844. When Christ did not return as Miller prophecied, Adventists divided into a number of factions. During the 1870s, Charles Taze Russell established himself as an independent and controversial Adventist teacher. He rejected belief in hell as a place of eternal torment and adopted a non-Trinitarian theology that denied the divinity of Jesus. He also interpreted the Second Coming in accordance with the literal translation of the original Greek term, parousia (“presence”), suggesting that Christ would come as an invisible presence and that the Parousia, or “Millennial Dawn,” already had occurred, in 1874. The coming of Christ’s invisible presence signaled the end of the current order of society and would be followed by his visible presence and the establishment of the millennial kingdom on earth in 1914. Although the kingdom did not come, Russell’s teachings motivated a number of volunteers to circulate his many books and pamphlets and a periodical, The Watchtower, and to recalculate the time of the Parousia. In addition to the International Bible Students Association, Russell formed the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania (1884), with himself as president. In 1909 he transferred the headquarters of the movement to Brooklyn. Russell was succeeded as president in 1917 by Joseph Franklin Rutherford (Judge Rutherford; 1869–1942), who changed the group’s name to Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1931 to emphasize its members’ belief that Jehovah, or Yahweh, is the true God and that the Witnesses were his specially chosen followers. -

We did this by sending in a letter of disassociation in August 1982, requesting that our names be removed from membership. Although the act of disassociation was simple enough, the events leading up to that decision involved a great deal. We had personally witnessed many inconsistencies down through the years but had always shelved our doubts. We lived through the 1960's and the false prophecy concerning the end of the world in 1975. However, the issue that became paramount to us was the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses had surrendered their freedom of conscience to their leadership. This was by design; the Watch Tower Society has become an authoritarian, totalitarian organization, ruled by a group of men known as the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. This small group of men, through their representatives, wields absolute control over the consciences and lives of 3.4 million Jehovah's Witnesses. This imposition of conscience affects the lives of members in areas of health (both mental and physical) as well as marriage, raising- children, education, general welfare, and almost every decision-making process imaginable. -

Challenging the Cults 5. History of Jehovah Witnesses Most people have had a visit by Jehovah’s Witnesses from the local Kingdom Hall. Reactions vary, from rudeness, to hospitality. Just who are these Witnesses? Are they Christian? Are they a cult? To find these answers we need to examine the facts. Today, the active number of Jehovah Witnesses is 6,429,000, and there are 95,919 congregations.1 In 2003, 258,845 new Jehovah Witnesses were baptized. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the official name, claims to be God’s prophet on Earth. "The historical facts show that 1919 was the year when the remnant on earth of the 144,000 Kingdom heirs began to be freed from Great Babylon. In that year the message of God's established kingdom began to be preached from house to house and publicly by Jehovah's Christian witnesses in a fearless way. This preaching of the Kingdom as established in 1914 was in fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy in Matthew 24:14: 'This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations." Bible Answers About Denominations About 318 A.D., Arius, an elder of Alexandria, had problems accepting the teaching about the nature of Christ. “Hence he began to teach that Christ was different in essence from the Father and before that He did not exist.”(Howard F. The Arian teaching can be summed up as follows: (1) The Son was created out of nothing; hence He is different in essence from the Father; that He is Logos, wisdom, Son of God, is only of grace. He is not so in Himself. (2) There was, when He was not; i.e., He is a finite being. (3) He was created before everything else, and through Him the universe was created and is administered. (4) In the historical Christ the human element is merely the material; the soul is the Logos. The historical Christ, therefore, had no human soul, and the human elements that appear so prominently in the Gospels, are attributed to the Logos... (5) The Arians held that although the incarnate Logos is finite, and hence not God, He is to be worshiped, as being unspeakably exalted above all other creatures, the Creator and Governor of the universe, and the Redeemer of man. (Albert Henry Newman, A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1, p. 327). These are very similar to the points made in the book, Reasoning from the Scriptures, p. 209, of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The teachings of Arianism were challenged in 321 by Alexander, bishop of Alexandria. -

Baran Contested Victims: Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia, 1990- 2004 (Under the direction of Donald J. Raleigh) This essay analyzes how two religious organizations in post -Soviet Russia, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), grappled with the legacy of the Soviet past in light of Russia’s emerging democracy. Unlike other post -authoritarian states, the Russian government did little to address state repression, instead leaving society to sort out the victims from the collaborators and perpetrators. Witness and Orthodox versions of Sovie t religious repression emerged in this climate of fractured narratives. The Witnesses made their Soviet -era repression into a rallying point for their international movement, and within Russia, into a platform for demanding equal rights. The ROC responded by contesting both the Witnesses’ depiction of Soviet repression and their right to practice in Russia. The Witnesses exposed a major fault line in Russia’s transition to democracy. For nigh onto sixty years I have been associated with a movement that today is commanding world attention on a widening scale. It is a religious movement that has seemed new and recent to millions of people, a movement that has been fought tooth, tongue and pen by the dominant religions of this world, a movement that has been misrepresented, persecuted, cursed and damned, prayed against to the God of heaven, and subjected to mobbing, bans, confiscation and proscriptions, driven underground by Nazi, Fascist and Communist dictators, all this under the influence of religious leaders, all of them together up in arms against this lone movement. I know. I have gone through enough of it along with this movement to know whereof I speak and write. I myself have spent nine long months in prison for my faith before I was released with my fellow-sufferers and then Page 4 CALLED OUT OF DARKNESS cleared of all the untrue charges that put us behind bars. Since then I have talked to hundreds of young men likewise put behind bars for their faith. In the course of the years I have traveled through many countries, including Palestine where Jesus and the apostles preached the same message; talked to hundreds of thousands of people from the public platform, frequently through the aid of an interpreter, yes, and from house to house as the apostles did; and at present it is my privilege to address untold numbers by the modern means of radio over a pioneer station in New York City, answering people's questions, giving them Bible counsel delivered straight from the shoulder.
