81 PREPARATION OF HORTICULTURAL ENTRIES The exhibitor is concerned with providing the highest quality possible, from the time of selecting specimens to placing them in the proper class. The following list provides guidance. 1. List or mark in the schedule the plants you have grown that are or will be at the proper stage for exhibiting, including the “any other” categories. 2. Cut flowers and foliage the evening before the show or in the early morning, selecting specimens of quality. 3. Preparing Materials for Hardening a) Remove lower foliage cleanly. Upper foliage must be attached unless otherwise stated. b) Specimen blooms must be disbudded. In fact, good exhibitors will often disbud weeks before the show. c) Make a fresh slanting cut at the end of stems, for maximum water intake. d) Place in a wide bucket in deep warm water, preferably overnight. e) Store in a cool, dark, humid, draft-free place. 4. Conditioning It is well known that some cut flowers, foliage and woody materials do not readily absorb water, and require further treatment prior to hardening, to prevent wilting during the show. a) Flowering branches generally benefit from splitting the cut ends, although some require removal of the thick outer layer as well. b) Some cut flowers (e.g. poppies) benefit from burning the stem ends, while others benefit from placing stem ends in boiling water or from chemicals in the water. Details are available in flower arranging books. Note: Flower arrangers are familiar with conditioning and hardening, and exhibitors in the Horticultural Division should apply these same methods to avoid unsightly wilted specimens. 5. Preparation of Specimens for Showing a) Grooming should be encouraged. Removal of dust, stains, pollen and any other foreign material from blooms and foliage enhances the exhibit. b) Re-cut stem ends before placing in show containers. c) Some cautions: - A bud showing colour is considered a bloom, which upsets the bloom count. - Only self-foliage is permitted to be attached, unless otherwise stated in the schedule. - Wiring, oiling, spraying and artificial colouring is prohibited in the Horticultural Division. 6. Placing Entries a) Exhibitors are responsible for placing entries in proper classes. Some specialized exhibitions assign this responsibility to a subcommittee. b) The classification committee can assist exhibitors to avoid errors in placing entries and ensure they qualify within the limits prescribed in the schedule. 7. Preparation of Show for Judging a) The placement committee is responsible for ensuring that all entries are in the proper classes prior to judging. b) Spacing of entries in the Horticultural Division can be adjusted, both for ease of judging and also for optimal public viewing. c) Clearing the exhibition hall – Except for judges, clerks and a representative of the Show Committee, everyone should vacate the hall so that final preparations and briefing may proceed before judging begins. 82 CLASS 61 HOUSEPLANTS Please pre-treat your plants for possible infestations before bringing them to the fair. 86 87 Congratulations to the Zimmerman Family

With Appreciation for all your Years of Dedicated Service to the Emo Fall Fair from the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society

Mike and Betty Zimmerman started showing cattle in 1958 at the Emo Fair. They entered cattle every year in what was called the “Black and White Show”.

In the many years they exhibited cattle, they found the time to be fair board directors during the 70’s and 80’s. Also in those years they were directors Mike would organize the cattle show and Betty would organize the flower show in the Exhibition Hall.

For many years the family was involved in 4-H, always bringing Holstein cattle and a few market steers.

Because of their dedication for 4-H and the fair, a passion for showing cattle was born. After 50-plus years, several of Mike and Betty’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren still show cattle at the Emo Fair.

It is because of the dedication to the fair that the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society would like to thank the Zimmerman Family for their efforts for so many years.

The Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society is looking for nominations of a family who deserves recognition for their long-standing contributions and involvement in the Emo Fall Fair. This is an annual event, and every year a family will be recognized for their efforts. Please send your nomination in writing to: Jan Judson, Board Secretary, Box 506, Emo, Ontario, P0W 1E0
