Nouméa, Octobre 1992 5 PREAMBLE The second edition of this bibliographic catalogue is designed for use by aU those who are undertaking research relating 10 the marine environment in the region ofNew Caledonia. It is intended 10 he a practical instrument that will enable the user 10 find quickly the most importanL Wi'lk that already exists in respect ofeach subject. Our aim has heen 10 make this document exhaustive: we have therefore included such items as press articles and roneoed documents of which sorne were produced to find now : they fo:m the "grey literature" and may sometinmes prove 10 he very useful. We have made copious use ofexisting bibliographic documents: o'REILLY, 1955; PISIER, 1982 ; CCOP/SOPAC Technical Bulletin No. 5 and also certain documents such as THOMASSIN (1981) and RICHER de FORGES et al. (1987) which already included bibliographies in embryo. This bibliographic catalogue, stored in a computer medium (using the "Directory 2.0" programme), is conceived in such a way that it can he corrected, added to or consulted whenever so required. In particular, it is possible to add new key words and to use it as an interactive research instrument. The presentation ofthe references is both simple and consistent with conventional standards; thus the homogeneity of the whole is enhanced. A great volume of high quality work on the marine environment has heen carried out in the region and the preparation ofthe catalogue bas provided an opportunity for reviewing the extent of what is known, in the area considered, in respect ofeach discipline. 1 - Description of New Caledonia and demarcation ofthe geographical area of the subject The Territory of New Caledonia and Dependencies (Mainland, Loyalty

Chitons collected from submarine banks off the northern Izu Islands and Bōsō Pen- insula by various cruises from 1970 to 2003 were examined taxonomically. In total, 14 species belonging to 13 genera in 8 families were recognized, including one new Leptochiton species which is described as L. bergenhayni n. sp. herein, and one undetermined species of the genus Tegulaplax. Of the 14 species, additional descriptions and/or illustrations of taxonomically im- portant morphology are given for two less known species, Leptochiton aequispinus (Bergenhayn, 1933) and Connexochiton kaasi (Saito, 1997). The latter species, C. kaasi is the first record from outside the type locality. Except for one species, Ischnochiton albinus Thiele, 1911, which is also distributed in the Tropical West Pacific, 12 species were regarded to be endemic in the sub- littoral zone of warm water areas around the Japanese Islands and/or the East China Sea, while one species, Tegulaplax sp. has an indeterminate distribution. Key words: chiton, Japan, submarine bank, new species, fauna. • New Outlook on the System of Chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora)*
VENUS 65 (1-2): 27-49, 2006 Review New Outlook on the System of Chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora)* Boris Sirenko Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Universitetskaya nab.1, St. Petersburg 199034, Russia; [email protected] Abstract: In order to build a natural classification of the chitons, a new approach is proposed that uses not only the shells, as usual, but also other suitable features including aesthetes, girdle, radula, gills, glands, egg hull projections, spermatozoids etc. Several previous classifications are discussed. A brief review of the evolution of the Polyplacophora is given and a new classification of the chitons is proposed. The roles of the articulamentum and the reductions in the tegmentum in chitons are discussed. The evolutionary line of the reduction of slits is shown for the superfamily Cryptoplacoidea. Specifically, the genera Hemiarthrum, Weedingia and Choriplax, which have unslitted valves, have been removed from the order Lepidopleurida and reassigned to the order Chitonida within the Cryptoplacoidea. Affinities of these and other genera within the Cryptoplacoidea are discussed. Keywords: Polyplacophora, taxonomy, evolution, articulamentum, reduction of tegmentum Introduction Creating classifications at its best is all about searching for phylogenetic affinities. The described natural system is a reflection of our ideas about affinities, expressed with the aid of a hierarchy of taxa. In the words of Darwin (1873): “...that Natural System is founded on descent with modification; - that the characters which naturalists consider as showing true affinity between any two or more species, are those which have been inherited from a common parents...all true classification being genealogical; - that community of descent is the hidden bond which naturalists have been unconsciously seeking...” For the early classifications of chitons, naturalists usually used a single or a few characters and their classifications were thus artificial.

  • Supplement – December 2017 – Survey of the Literature on Recent
A Malacological Journal ISSN 1565-1916 No. 36 - SUPPLEMENT DECEMBER 2017 2 SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE ON RECENT SHELLS FROM THE RED SEA (third enlarged and revised edition) L.J. van Gemert* Summary This literature survey lists approximately 3,050 references. Shells are being considered here as the shell bearing molluscs of the Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. The area does not only comprise the Red Sea, but also the Gulf of Aden, Somalia and the Suez Canal, including the Lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea. Literature on fossils shells, particularly those from the Holocene, Pleistocene and Pliocene, is listed too. Introduction My interest in recent shells from the Red Sea dates from about 1996. Since then, I have been, now and then, trying to obtain information on this subject. Some years ago I decide to stop gathering data in a haphazard way and to do it more properly. This resulted in a first survey of approximately 1,420 and a second one of 2,025 references (van Gemert, 2010 & 2011). Since then, this survey has again been enlarged and revised and a number of errors have been corrected. It contains now approximately 3,050 references. Scope In principle every publication in which molluscs are reported to live or have lived in the Red Sea should be listed in the survey. This means that besides primary literature, i.e. articles in which researchers are reporting their finds for the first time, secondary and tertiary literature, i.e. reviews, monographs, books, etc are to be included too. These publications were written not only by a wide range of authors ranging from amateur shell collectors to professional malacologists but also people interested in the field of archaeology, geology, etc.

The polyplacophorans originate from the ‘nose-chalk’ in the classical Danish locality of Fakse Quarry, an unconsolidated coral limestone in whicharagoniticmolluscshellsarepreserved throughtransformation intocalcite. In platearchitecture and sculpture, the new Danish material is similar to Recent Leptochiton spp., but differs in its underdeveloped apophyses and high dorsal elevation (height/width ca. 0.54). Cladistic analysis of 55 original shell characters coded for more than 100 Recent and fossil species in the order Lepidopleurida shows very high resolution of interspecific relationships, but does not consistently recover traditional genera or subgenera. Inter-relationships within the suborder Lepidopleurina are of particular interest as it is often considered the most ‘basal’ neoloricate lineage. In a local context, the presence of chitons in the faunal assemblage of Fakse contributes evidence of shallow depositional depth for at least some elements of this Palaeocene seabed, a well-studied formation of azooxanthellic coral limestones. This new record for Denmark represents a well-dated and ecologically well-understood fossil chiton with potential value for understanding the radiation of the Neoloricata.
