Friday, May 18, 2018 12:00pm – 3:00pm ~ Room 33-105 CHS Fielding School of Public Health (Center for Health Sciences) Panelists: Margaret Prescod of KPFK Radio and Nana Gyamfi, human & civil rights attorney MARGARET PRESCOD In the mid-1980’s, in response to police reports of the serial murders of Black Women in South LA, Margaret founded the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders which resulted in the establishment of a reward by LA City and an LAPD task force to investigate the murders. Her work was reflected in the recent HBO film about the murders entitled “Tales of the Grim Sleeper.” The film was short listed for an Academy Award. She is the host and producer of “Sojourner Truth” a popular nationally syndicated drive-time public affairs program on Pacifica Radio’s KPFK in Los Angeles, WBAI in New York City and WPFW in Washington DC as well as several other stations. NANA GYAMFI Known as the ‘People's Attorney,' Nana Gyamfi is a human and civil rights advocate who seeks to address the social justice challenges of the community through legal advocacy, involvement in local causes and activism. In addition to being an attorney in private practice, she runs the Crenshaw Legal Clinic where she provides legal-ease workshops providing knowledge on civil rights, and is an adjunct professor at Cal State University Los Angeles in the Pan African Studies Department. Nana is also a co-founder and co-director of Human Rights Advocacy, a community based organization dedicated to defending the human rights of Black and oppressed people everywhere. Attorney Gyamfi earned her BA from Cornell University and her law degree from UCLA's School of Law. LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED .

Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

Wages for housework pdf Continue The global feminist movement The International Wages for Housework Campaign (IWFHC) is a grassroots women's network that campaigns for the recognition and payment of all charitable work, at home and abroad. It was initiated in 1972 by Selma James[1] who first filed the wage demand for domestic chores at the third National Women's Liberation Conference in Manchester, England. The IWFHC says they start with those with less power internationally - homeless workers at home (mothers, housewives, home workers denied pay), and farmers and subsistence workers without waves on land and in the community. They believe that the demand for wages for unpaid charity work is also a perspective and a way of organizing from the bottom up, of the autonomous sectors working together to end the power relations between them. History salaries for household chores were one of six lawsuits in women, unions and labor or what should not be done[2], which James presented as a document at the third National Women's Liberation Conference. The power of women and subversion of the community[3], which James co-authored with Mariarosa Dalla Costa, which opened the domestic labor debate and became a classic of the women's movement, was published shortly after Women, the Unions and Work. The first edition of Power of Women did not come out for salaries for household chores; its third edition, in 1975, did so. After the Manchester conference, James with three or four other women formed the Power of Women Collective in London and Bristol to campaign for domestic chores wages.

This is familiar turf for Broomfield, whose credits include two celebrated docus about Aileen Wuornos. But as its pluralistic title suggests, “Tales” is less a portrait of Franklin himself than a panoramic survey of the sociological forces that aided and abetted his killing spree. 1 What emerges, finally, is an urgent distress call from one of America’s many, predominately black inner cities cast adrift by decades of municipal neglect and institutional racism. His victims, most of them prostitutes in South Los Angeles, had lived on the margins of society, and their deaths left few useful clues aside from the DNA of the man who had sexually assaulted them in the moments before their deaths. A sweep of state prisons in 2008 failed to come up with the killer or anyone related to him. Then, last Wednesday, startling news came to the LAPD: A second "familial search" of prisons had come up with a convict whose DNA indicated that he was a close relative of the serial killer suspected of killing at least 10 women. Working through the Fourth of July weekend, LAPD detectives drew up a family tree of the prisoner, then began analyzing all the men on it. Were they the right age? Did they live near the murder scenes? Was there anything in their background to explain why the serial killer had apparently stopped killing for 13 years, then resumed in 2003? From that painstaking process, according to LAPD officials who requested anonymity, the prisoner's father emerged as a likely suspect. An undercover team was sent to follow him; they retrieved a discarded slice of pizza to analyze his DNA.
