    Fifty years later: The legend of Big Klu still lives large By Paul Ladewski Staff Writer Posted June 9, 2009 The area once referred to as Argo is located eight miles west of old Comiskey Park, a decidedly blue‐collar town known for a corn milling and processing plant that is among the largest of its kind. As the barely 10,000 residents would tell you, it has the odor to prove it, too. But to many Chicago baseball fans, especially those on the South Side, the location is known for something of far greater significance. It also was home to Ted Kluszewski, the 6‐foot‐ 2, 225‐pound mountain of a man with the famous 15‐inch biceps, whose legend in White Sox history will live even longer than the home runs he hit decades ago. “I remember the first time that I saw Ted in those cut‐off sleeves," former White Sox pitcher Billy Pierce still recalls his trademark style nearly a half century later. "They were good‐sized. He was a big man. A big man." Says Bill "Moose" Skowron, the former White Sox and New York Yankees first baseman who crossed paths with Big Klu many times in their careers. "Everybody knows Ted could hit a baseball. What some people don't know is that he was a helluva first baseman and a helluva nice guy, too. And he always played in those short‐sleeve shirts. He was built like a rock, you know." How can the South Side of Chicago ever forget? There Kluszewski will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Brinks jobs in White Sox history, a local boy who made very, very good one unforgettable season.

Reflections on William “Bill” Johnson by Bob Chipman January 2017 Bill, It's hard to know where to start, and even harder to compose the right words on a smartphone, but I have to tell you that the general session was absolutely perfect in every way. Undoubtedly the best session I can remember seeing. You guys were all fantastic. I wanted to wait for things to calm down before sending a note, and now there's a chance to write a few words. Certainly, they won't come close to being adequate. After having breakfast together and then seeing you and Charlotte at the LSU party, together with James Turner and Joe Porter, I was already in great spirits about the profession and its connections. So then, the next morning, seeing what unfolded on the stage was even more fun, knowing a little of the background. It was an engaging, well-organized, elegant, and powerfully moving event. I may be going out on a limb here, but think it may become one of the most memorable and important sessions in the history of the ASLA.

He was the second of thirteen children (eight boys and five girls) born to Will and Clara Hairston. Will Hairston moved his family from Crawford to the Birmingham area in 1922. The primary reason for the move was to find better work so that he could support his large family. Will became a coal miner and worked alongside Garnett Bankhead who was the father of the five Bankhead brothers who all played in the Negro Leagues. By 1930 Will had gained employment with American Cast Iron and Pipe (ACIPCO) as a laborer in their pipe shop. According to United States census records the Hairston family also lived in North Birmingham and Sayreton. Sam spent his formative years in Hooper City and attended Hooper City High School. Reportedly Sam did not finish high school and when he was 16 he told the employment office at ACIPCO that he was 18 and was given a job working for the company. According to Sam he went to work to help support the family and give his brothers and sisters the opportunity to go to school.

It is my honor to serve as Chairman of this organization and to see 2016 Graduate of the Year 6-7 firsthand how the efforts of the Board have made this event stronger than ever. As a private, non-profit organization, we are dedicated to carry-on Hap Dumont’s original vision; one that provides quality baseball Former Graduates of the Year 8-9 in a family setting. The National Baseball Congress State Tournament was started in 1931 by Hap Dumont. It was originally 2016 League Affiliates 10 played on Island Park in the middle of the Arkansas River. In 1935, Hap added what has become our treasured annual event, the NBC World Series. Since then, the World Series has seen a few changes. The bats were wood, then switched to aluminum, then back to wood. The ownership of the tournament has 2016 NBC Award Sponsors 11 changed from private to public and now private. The boxcars outside the right field fence where kids used to watch the games are gone and the concourse was added.
