  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

2000 Terrapin Invitational Tournament - Division 1 Round 9 Questions by John Nam Tossups 1. It tells of life at 27 rue de Fleurus, which became a hub of artistic discussion in the early 1900s. Featuring real-life encounters of its author and its narrator with artists from Picasso to Hemingway, this 1932 work was its author's first critical and commercial success. FTP, name this work, which despite its title mainly concerns the life story of its author, Gertrude Stein. Ans: The Autobiography ofAlice B. Toklas 2. First formed in August 1965, their original lineup included Bob Harvey and Jerry Pelonquin, who were soon initially replaced by Alexander Skip Spence and Signe Anderson, then by Spencer Dryden and Jack Casady. Their debut album was moderately successful, a former member of Great Society joined in 1966 and the subsequent release of Surrealistic Pillow that they took off. FTP, name this seminal band whose most famous members were Jorma Kaukonen, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick. Ans: Jefferson Airplane 3. While studying for the bar in New Salem, Illinois, he began courting the fiancee of John McNamar, who had gone to get his parents in New York. McNamar's fiancee agreed to marry him ifshe could get an "honorable release" from her engagement, but got milk fever and died before McNamar's return in the fall of 1835. Such is the tale of the first love of this man for Ann Rutledge, mildly ironic considering his future reputation for honesty. FTP, name this assassination victim and u.S. statesman. Ans: Abraham Lincoln 4.

ADAM SANDLER: MENTOR OF MIDDLE-CLASS MASCULINITY AND MANHOOD A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Stanislaus In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History By Kathleen Boone Chapman April 2014 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL ADAM SANDLER: MENTOR OF MASCULINITY AND FATHERHOOD by Kathleen Boone Chapman Signed Certification of Approval Page is on file with the University Library Dr. Bret E. Carroll Date Professor of History Dr. Samuel Regalado Date Professor of History Dr. Marcy Rose Chvasta Date Professor of Communications © 2014 Kathleen Boone Chapman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION I am dedicating this work to my three dear friends: Ronda James, Candace Paulson, and Michele Sniegoski. Ronda’s encouragement and obedience to the Lord gave me what I needed to go back to school with significant health issues and so late in life. Candace, who graduated from Stanford “back in the olden days,” to quote our kids, inspired me to follow my dream and become all God wants me to be. Michele’s long struggle with terminal kidney disease motivated me to keep living in spite of my own health issues. We have laughed and cried together over many years, but all of you have given me strength to carry on. Sorry two of you made it to heaven before I could get this finished. I also want to give credit to my husband of forty years who has been a faithful breadwinner, proof-reader, and a paragon of patience. What more could any woman ask for? He has also put up with me yelling at my computer and cursing Bill Gates – A LOT.

  • Green Gets Finger for Film 'T
&6 THE 0 RIO N • APR I L 2 5, 200 1 I ! " , " ..~ Green gets finger for film 't , ~ DANA BUCHANAN ' I:i CONTHIIIIJTING WlllTlJ1l This is a warning: If you are not a huge fan of Tom Green and his MTV show, and if you have not been waiting to see him in all his complete, uncensored grotesque glory, then do not sec "Freddy Got Fingered." Tom Green wrote, directed and stars in "Freddy Got Fingered," and his signature brand of comedy is slathered all over this mm. Green plays Gord Brody, a 28-year old slacker who finally leaves home (to his parents elation) to attempt to become a professional animator, only to return home disappointed. Instantly the antics begin in that strange unexplainable Tom Green way. Gord just docs weird (uncomfortably weird) stuff without much rhyme or reason. If you have never before seen, or wanted to sec, someone fondle animal genitalia (horse and elephant respectively), then you might be in for a shock, to say the least. The story line of Gord wanting to be a professional animator docs seem to make perfect sense. Gord is a child in a semi adult's body, and drawing cartoons fits the character perfectly. Gord goes to Los Angeles to try to sell his work by breaking into the office of an animation executive (Anthony Michael Hall). This scene is relatively funny as Gord confounds security with his "weirdness" (for lack of a better word) and manages to get to the office of the head honcho. Then of course, there is a lot of Green's usual bizarre physical comedy, which makes one wonder why the exec hasn't called security yet.

  • Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.
