We would recommend the ONE railway system, who operate a service from London Liverpool Street to St Margarets on a 30min frequency. www.onerailway.com (*Please note that this is St Margarets in Hertfordshire and NOT South London). The train station is a 5-10min walk from the race start at St Margaretsbury Sports Ground. If travelling by car, there is parking around Hackney Marsh and then a short bus journey to Liverpool Street Station or Tottenham Hale www.tfl.co.uk There is NO parking at St Margaretsbury Sports Ground due to the access required for runners and logistics vehicles. There is, however, parking in St Margarets itself on the streets of the main town centre, or a pay and display car park at the train station. Getting to and from the race….. In response to demand we have hired a coach to transport runners from the finish to the start of the race on race morning. This coach will pick up from Stratford Rail station at 7.30am and then Hackney Marsh (pavilion beside Homerton Road) at 7.45am. It will then leave Hackney Marsh to go direct to St Margaretsbury Sports Ground for the registration/race start (arriving by 9am). Places on this facility are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. As we are a charity, we have had to levy a (very reasonable) £5 charge per runner, payable on the day to cover the cost of this facility. -

HISTORY OF THE EAST LONDON LINE – FROM BRUNEL’S THAMES TUNNEL TO THE LONDON OVERGROUND by Oliver Green A report of the LURS meeting at All Souls Club House on 11 October 2011 Oliver worked at the London Transport Museum for many years and was one of the team who set up the Covent Garden museum in 1980. He left in 1989 to continue his museum career in Colchester, Poole and Buckinghamshire before returning to LTM in 2001 to work on its recent major refurbishment and redisplay in the role of Head Curator. He retired from this post in 2009 but has been granted an honorary Research Fellowship and continues to assist the museum in various projects. He is currently working with LTM colleagues on a new history of the Underground which will be published by Penguin in October 2012 as part of LU’s 150th anniversary celebrations for the opening of the Met [Bishops Road to Farringdon Street 10 January 1863.] The early 1800s saw various schemes to tunnel under the River Thames, including one begun in 1807 by Richard Trevithick which was abandoned two years later when the workings were flooded. This was started at Rotherhithe, close to the site later chosen by Marc Isambard Brunel for his Thames Tunnel. In 1818, inspired by the boring technique of shipworms he had studied while working at Chatham Dockyard, Brunel patented a revolutionary method of digging through soft ground using a rectangular shield. His giant iron shield was divided into 12 independently moveable protective frames, each large enough for a miner to work in. -

These notes are based upon 14 meetings between 6th-9th October 2015, plus one further meeting in January 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. Comments are not attributed to specific individuals, as agreed with the interviewees and TfL. Milton Keynes rail services – Matter 5 – Transport – 24 th July – Jim Middleton – REP/269971 1. Since I wrote my initial submission there have been some positive changes so I have revised my statement. Firstly on Crossrail there is now the inclusion in the Network Rail Programme of a Crossrail extension to join the West Coast mainline near Willesden. I petitioned and appeared before both the Commons and Lords Crossrail Select Committees to put my basic case that the Crossrail services proposed were a waste of expensive tunnelling under Central London and that Crossrail should be a Thameslink style regional rail scheme. Not a downgrading of main railway lines to a London Underground type operation that hardly crosses the M25. The Committees were only allowed to consider details of the scheme and not whether it made transport sense but particularly the Lords Select Committee encouraged me to continue my campaign. 2. The recent work done by the wider rail industry for their report London and SE RUS confirms that the Crossrail scheme is poor use of the central tunnels and the 28 trains out of the 48 each hour not getting west of Paddington are wasted. The RUS proposes a link to WCML which will allow trains from WCML to access directly Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. Potentially there are huge benefits for Milton Keynes if the opportunity is taken – particularly when HS2 allows more fast suburban services into London. 3. Although the West Coast mainline has been upgraded at enormous expense with years of chronic disruption and weeks of blockades for Milton Keynes residents what has emerged nothing like what people were expecting. -

Crossrail 2 factsheet: Services between Berrylands and Hampton Court New Crossrail 2 services are proposed to serve all stations between Berrylands and Hampton Court, with 4 trains per hour in each direction operating directly to, and across central London. What is Crossrail 2? Crossrail 2 in this area Crossrail 2 is a proposed new railway serving London and the wider South East that could be open by 2030. It would connect the existing National Rail networks in Surrey and Hertfordshire with trains running through a new tunnel from Wimbledon to Tottenham Hale and New Southgate. Crossrail 2 will connect directly with National Rail, London Underground, London Overground, Crossrail 1, High Speed 1 international and domestic and High Speed 2 services, meaning passengers will be one change away from over 800 destinations nationwide. Why do we need Crossrail 2? The South West Main Line is one of the busiest and most congested routes in the country. It already faces capacity constraints and demand for National Rail services into Waterloo is forecast to increase by at least 40% by 2043. This means the severe crowding on the network will nearly double, and would likely lead to passengers being unable to board trains at some stations. Crossrail 2 provides a solution. It would free up space on the railway helping to reduce congestion, and would enable us to run more local services to central London that bypass the most congested stations. Transport improvements already underway will help offset the pressure in the short term. But we need Crossrail 2 to cope with longer term growth.
