STAFF ONLY

HELD DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF THIS YEAR’S SITE FESTIVAL THE STAFF ONLY EXHIBITION PROMISES TO BE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL. IT NOT ONLY RESONATES WITH THE VENUE OF A DISUSED SHOP (MILLETS ON THE HIGH STREET), BUT ALSO REFERENCES THE FACT THAT THE EXHIBITING ARTISTS ALL WORK FULL-TIME IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES IN STROUD. ONE OF THE ORGANISERS AND EXHIBITORS, CAROLINE JAINE, DESCRIBES THE EXHIBITION AS “THE DOOR THAT YOU WANT TO STEP THROUGH, BUT ARE NOT ALLOWED; ONLY THIS TIME, WE ARE INVITING PEOPLE IN TO TAKE A LOOK.”

The 25 artists are exhibiting together for the first time, and although they work closely with each other, many of them have not seen each other’s artwork. For the past few months they have been working hard in the evenings and weekends to bring this show together and felt that the Site Festival was the right place to share. Precisely at this moment (2009) STAFF ONLY is as diverse as the people exhibiting - some are artists by Harry Watton born and bred in Stroud, others have travelled to be here for work - from as far away as Italy and Estonia. Expect photo realist beetles, taxidermied creatures, paintings made of wool, striking book-art, a racoon with a donut, a poisonous tree, abstract perfection, portraits hidden in a cupboard, and an unusual take on classic streetscape - including a homage to Stroud’s status as ‘Guardian of bees’ - and that’s just a small sample of the art on show.

The group also feature a number of musicians, who will be performing at the STAFF ONLY AFTER PARTY on the 9th April at the SVA (see music listings for further info). The exhibition is open from 2nd to the 10th April 11am-4pm weekends and 1.30-6pm weekdays.
