Over the year, our average David Chilton. attendance was just over 60 entries per meeting, with Lakeside again being the most popular track. With higher attendance comes more cars on the track in all groups; this has meant driver conduct on the track has become even more important. Managing on-track behaviour - keeping drivers safe, giving everyone a fair go and minimising track incidents will become an even higher priority next year. Editorial G’day Folks, Well what a year it has been, and somehow through all the difficulties we managed to safely hold some track days and not create a motor sport cluster of COVID. We must thank all members and spectators in helping to keep the events safe for all, on and off the track and a special thanks to the QR staff for allowing us to get some track time and importantly to catch up with one another for some much needed “mental health” therapy in a challenging year………and what a way to drop the checkered flag on 2020 with two big track days at Lakeside Park…...roll on 2021! Members, there is some important info on the following pages about the format for our events in 2021 so please take the time to have a read and understand the changes for next year’s events and the reasons behind the changes. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2021….. ……until next year, keep it on the black stuff. CHANGES FOR GEAR EVENTS NEXT YEAR. Hello Members, Season’s greetings! As you may be aware 2021 brings big changes for GEAR Club track days, starting from our first meeting at Queensland Raceway on Thursday February 25th. Every meeting next year will be a half day in the morning, followed at 1pm by QR’s Classic Bikes event. GEAR events scheduled by QR for Lakeside Park will be held on Saturday mornings. All Queensland Raceway (Willowbank) meetings, are scheduled for a Thursday, starting on the track at 8.30am and finishing at 12.30pm. Sign-on will commence at 7:30am, and the driver briefing at 8:10am. As noted above, Lakeside Park events will be on a Saturday, starting on the track at 9.00am and finishing at 12.45pm. Entry for GEAR club members will be from 7:30am. NOTE: NO cars/trailers are to be parked on Lakeside Road before 7:30am ! Lakeside Park Sign-on will commence at 8:00am, and the driver briefing at 8:40am. We will cater for late arrivals at both venues, with a second driver’s briefing before the second round, where required. Also, we will be seeking your patience and support in case changes to groups and or running times are required to ensure smooth operations of a track day. Why? What is going on? John Tetley has made the decision not to use the main Lakeside Park track at all during the week. He explained that his decision is in response to unresolved noise issues with a few neighbours, and the unfulfilled promises made by elected government officials (for our newer members, this issue has been going on for approximately 12 years). By combining the GEAR and Classic Bikes events on the one day it frees up more “noise days” for other events. It is his hope, that these changes will keep Lakeside Park as a viable venue. Ramifications? The Committee will closely monitor the responses of our membership, with a continuing focus on safety. Plenty has been said already, but it will be interesting to see if there is a big change in the participation rate. Maybe participation will increase, having some of our meetings on a weekend? Maybe the earlier starts at both tracks will make it too hard for some members to get there on time? Most changes in life come with winners and losers, this is no different. Patience will be required as we adapt and learn. From the big picture of the future of the Club, we sincerely hope these changes will be accepted, and that our Club will continue to thrive. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year. The Management Committee. As you will read below I think the world of the club and the members as they are truly great people and keep the Austin 7 family going. Thank you - Brett Wilson) To All Austin 7 Club members, Over the last 11 years that we have been involved with the Austin Seven Register of QLD I have always said the Austin 7 Club is the best club that I have ever been in and over the last 2 years you all have shown me why that statement was true. After my ruptured disc and the 3 surgeries to fix it I had offer after offer to help with anything that we needed. I never did take up the offers as I was too proud and I did not want to put any one out in any way. Then one day I was told (not asked mind you but “told”) that the club members were coming to help tidy up around the yard and the shed and they were going to get in a skip and do everything that 1 Amanda and myself couldn’t.

  • Austin 7 Adventures
Austin Adventures. A life with Austin Sevens and Friends. Austin Adventures. This book has been generated following a talk given to the Beaulieu Friends. The request was made by the events coordinator Mike Webster and the secretary. I was asked to give a talk about our experiences with our Austin Seven cars and our friends in the Austin movement. The talk took place on 15th February 2020 in the lecture theatre at Beaulieu on a stormy night. Joy was with me as she was very much involved in all these trips. Beaulieu requested we bring one of the cars to the event so I took the Cambridge Special to the event. It was placed in the theatre below the projection screen. There was an attendance of around ninety people in the theatre and it was said to be a successful evening. The talk took place over 2 hours with an interval at the half way point. The car created a great deal of interest. I had driven it to Beaulieu in the rain on the morning of the event. The presentation was built from our comprehensive catalogue of photographs and put together as a Power Point presentation. There was enough detail to give an idea of what was possible and the capability of these small cars. I felt it would be a good idea to create a printed record to share with family and with the help of a local provider the idea became a reality. Joy and I hope you enjoy the book which covers the period 1977 to 2019.

It is for Club members only and will be held over the weekend of the 8th and 10th of September, with a special meeting to be held possibly at the Camp Kitchen at the Tourist Park on the night of Friday the 8th of September. There will also be an opportunity to stay on for a couple of days longer in the area for the retirees. A certain amount of accommodation has already been booked at the Dalby Tourist Park in anticipation. There are further details inside this newsletter. If you think this newsletter is late, your 100% correct! We are actually one month out of synch due to the demands of the recent Tour in Toowoomba. I also have been rather busy as my elderly mother has had two falls and two visits in hospital complicated with pneumonia and mobility issues.

BEADED IIBBLS . NaZa VETERAN AND VINTAGE MOTORING JUNE •. J 9 6 7 ~ "HORSELESS CARRIAGE" In 1893 the first gasoline pow ered motorcar in the U nited Sta tes cru ised down the main streets of Springfield, Mass., at a speed of five miles an hour! This car was made by two brothers, Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea. In 1896 Henry Ford drove his first car out. of the machine shop in Detroit. Later, his system of machine-made, interchangeable parts, and assembly line production, put motorcars within the price range of the man-in-the-street, By the beginning of the 20th century, 8,000 motorcars were registered in the United States. These were powered by steam, gasoline or electricity, and even then they did not look much like the original "Horseless Carriage." Some of the law s passed in the early days of the motorcar make us chuckle today. For instance, one community ruled that if a horse refused to pass a motorcar the driver of the car must "take the machine apart .. • and conceal the parts in the grass". In some places motorcars were banned entirely, and angry farmers guarded their livestock with shotguns against these "contraptions of the devil." It is easy to see that early motorists were indeed brave pioneers, often running risks that would be hard to imagine today, for they also had to contend with the discomfort of rough roads, open driving seats and temperamental engines. T'imes. have changed and those first motoring enthusiasts would be the first to ' appreciate the advances made both in car and tyre design since the exciting, stimulating days of the "Horseless Carriage." FIRESTONE Tyres, since the earliest days of motoring, have set the standard of reliability, economy and safety.

CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY WESLEY LINTON ANALYSIS OF TORSIONAL STIFFNESS AND DESIGN IMPROVEMENT STUDY OF A KIT CAR CHASSIS PROTOTYPE SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING SCIENCE MSc THESIS CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING SCIENCE MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT MSc THESIS Academic year 2001-2 Wesley Linton Analysis of Torsional Stiffness and Design Improvement Study of a Kit Car Prototype Supervisor: Mr. Jason Brown September 2002 This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science © Cranfield University 2002. All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the copyright owner. Wesley Linton Abstract The Luego prototype chassis was tested to determine the value of its global torsional stiffness. This value was calculated to be 1330Nm/deg. This value was to be improved upon by the following method: • Creation of a Finite element baseline validation model • Discussed modification of this model • A design improvement study • An optimisation study The creation of a Finite Element baseline validation model using MSC Patran/Nastran software compared favourably with the physical test results with a torsional stiffness value of 1352Nm/deg for a mass of 120.1Kg and an efficiency of 88g/Nm/deg. The discussed modifications had been suggested to Luego upon initial appraisal of the chassis were incorporated into this baseline model and resulted in increases in both torsional stiffness and efficiency. Further, the design improvement study performed resulted in a maximum torsional stiffness of 6448Nm/deg, an increase of 377% over the baseline model. A maximum increase in efficiency of 286% to 23g/Nm/deg for a mass of 148.3Kg accompanied this increase in torsional stiffness.
